Oh man, I still remember the original Tekken Tag Tournament . One of the first titles for the PS2, it was quite the phenomenon.

And finally, nearly 12 years later, the official sequel will land on North American store shelves. Namco Bandai Games America Inc. has announced that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will arrive for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September.

It'll boast "the largest player roster in Tekken history," with over 50 characters, each with "expanded fight arsenals and move sets to do battle in new stages set in different countries from around the world." The familiar tag-based combat will return, but we'll also get one-on-one matches and a solo fighter vs. tag-team battle option as well.

Pair Play mode lets up to four players each control a character, and in the new Fight Lab mode, we'll be able to customize the moves and appearance of new training character, Combot. "Players that clear the innovative Fight Lab will have mastered the complexities of Tekken and own their own customized Combot."

Said Namco Bandai Games Inc. Project Director Katsuhiro Harada:

"TEKKEN TAG TOURNAMENT is one of the most beloved entries in the TEKKEN series – not just among fans but also for myself and the entire development team, so crafting the sequel has been a labour of love for everyone here. To truly make this game stand up to the high benchmark set by the original, we have injected some exciting features and modes that will revolutionize the online fighting game community and allow new players to enjoy and master the game – so there will be something for everyone."

The fighting genre has enjoyed a big resurgence this generation, as most major franchises have seen great success. For a while there, I thought these were gonna die out…but that seems impossible now, doesn't it?
