Sony And Amazon Bring An Instant Video App To The PS3

The PlayStation 3 is a well-rounded, fully capable home entertainment system. Here's another reason why.

Sony has announced the Amazon Instant Video application for the PlayStation Network; it's live today and features 120,000 TV shows (25,000 of which are in high-definition) for rental or purchase, and free videos for Amazon Prime members.

You may already be familiar with this service, as it's currently available on various mobile devices and PCs, but it makes plenty of sense on a home console, yes? If you're an Amazon Prime member, you get a little perk (a selection of 17,000 shows); that membership costs $79/year, and it also insures free second-day shipping on most orders. As for the PS3 application, it will feature Recently Watched and Next Episode features, plus personal recommendations based on your favorite stuff. The app can even link to the Amazon servers so users can start streaming on one device and finish up on the PS3.

To tickle your buying bone, Amazon is tossing in an incentive for PS3 owners: 100 free TV shows, just to get your feet wet.

Is this any good? I'm thinking of getting this or hulu plus. What exclusives does this service have?

With amazon prime you not only get their video service, but free 2 day delivery on any prime available stuff on amazon.

Plus amazon is cheaper. I think Hulu has more movies and amazon has more tv shows.

I'm a prime member. So this is great for me. More options than Netflix is definitely a good thing in case they decide to bump up their prices again. Weaker horror selection (for instant streaming) on Amazon though. But I'm not one to complain.

Is Fringe part of the free TV shows? Just curious as I absolutely love that show.

The news is pretty much worthless to me (as I assume this is another US-only thing) but if I can convince a few friends in the US to watch the show this way, then I'll be all for it. LOL

Was a Prime member but haven't re-upped yet. For those of you in school you should be able to get Prime free for a year. After it expires you should be offered Prime for half price.

Sadly, my PS3 is only half the machine it should be. I get no access to any of the media application that makes the PS3 the main media center of the house… I have to go via the backdoor using proxies and the like if I need to stream stuff… what a shame!

Amazon needs to add some kind of instant queue like netflix has because I can't remember every movie and program that I want to watch.

Other than that, amazon and netflix are getting pretty similar in what they have to offer.

last time i checked no one spent 3,4,5,6 hundred bucks on 1,2,3,4,5, or so of them so they can watch their favourite TV show!

I'll just stick with Netflix. You still have to pay $4 a rental for most new movies. I can just rent those from Redbox for $1.20.

100 free TV shows? Is that streaming or downloading? I don't have cable and there are 3 shows I want to catch up on.
