If a game didn't show up at some point, we'd be surprised.

Some of you may be aware of Peter Jackson's current project; it's "The Hobbit," a new film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's legendary fantasy title, which was the prequel to "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

And the latest rumor seems awfully feasible. According to a recent Tweet by Superannuation , it seems F.E.A.R. developer Monolith is on board to work on a video game based on the aforementioned movie, which hits theaters this December.

"As to what Monolith/Warner Bros. Games Seattle is up to now – pretty sure it is a little fantasy action RPG-lite called The Hobbit: Part One."

It's interesting to note that Warner Bros. laid off 60 employees working in their Seattle studios; this included Snowblind, which produced the ill-fated The Lord of the Rings: War in the North . Superannuation also said "Snowblind basically no longer exists," so that's that. It's the same team that produced Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance , which was fantastic…not sure what happened there.

But anyway, expect to see the announcement of a game based on "The Hobbit" later this year, and don't be surprised if Monolith is at the helm.

Oh, I thought that by Monolith you were refering to Monolith Soft, the developers of Xenosaga and Xenoblade. But it is the other Monolith, the not so good one.

Why are they making a prequel? I heard this one barely has any action?

From what I have read it has been "modified" and "extended" somewhat from the original Tolkien works. I think Peter and his teams of real Wizard will not have screwed it up, even though the story has been "influenced" and "stretched" somewhat to make 2 films out of the original Hobbit story rather than just 1.

I guess a billion dollars in revenue is not enough!

The Hobbit was a great book and will hopefully make a great movie (there's plenty of action).

I heard at one point that they are taking some things from The Silmarillion (Tolkien's history of Middle Earth). I don't know how that would work though because I think most of it takes place in the age before The Hobbit and LOTR.

WTF!?
monolith?
what the hell does this have to do with horror?
sigh, does a single developer have any self pride left?

If you are old enough you have played a text-based adventure game of that title, based on this book.

In terms of why they are making the movie – the hobbit is a great book, much easier story to tell than the lord of the rings in many ways. i think i read that a part of the movie is going to explain what is happening in other parts of middle earth at this time, leading up to the lord of the rings.

in terms of the game… why can't a dev just make a GREAT middle earth game? not saying this won't be one, but man. tolkien created this universe – and not a single game has ever taken advantage of it. without middle earth, there is no skyrim, there is no dragon age, etc.

every game that comes out either retells lord of the rings, or takes place at the same time, in a different part of the world, influencing the story.

imagine a middle earth game where
a) the control, look, and feel is identical to skyrim (and pretend this game came out before skyrim lol)

and

b) the game starts out with a cutscene of the fellowship of the ring getting killed by an orc raiding party with no allegiance to sauron or saruman, and you, a lone ranger/elf/hobbit/dark wizard/orc/goblin/gollum/etc. in the wild, find this raiding party kill them, and acquire the ring.

then you can just run free in the world, have sick powers that you could level up on a skill tree based on the ring (hell, the skill tree could even look like the white tree of gondor,) and choose to do what you want to do. go run a missions for elrond and eventually destroy the ring and save middle earth? cool. go run missions for sauron and eventually kill sauron and rule middle earth? cool. kill townspeople at night time to build up xp, become an unstoppable ring wraith and eventually rule middle earth all by yourself? cool.

someone make this happen.
