Soul Calibur V was good, but it lacked some of that trademark "oomph" for which the franchise is so well known.

Some were expecting a heftier story, for example. Well, did you know the developer had initially planned to implement a much more robust story mode? According to what game director Daishi Odashima told Train2Game , the story aspect was supposed to be "four times bigger." Unfortunately, "time constraints" meant they couldn't do exactly what they wanted and the story mode had to be scaled back.

Odashima said Namco Bandai "didn't have the staff or the time" required to realize the "full vision" of the intended storyline. Essentially, what we got was a plot that mostly only focused on two characters (Patrokolos and his sister, Pyrrha), and each individual character was supposed to have a story. That's actually pretty standard, but as Odashima said:

"Our first plan on the storyboard was that we had every characters story, and actually we do have it in the studio, but time-wise, man power-wise we weren’t able to do it and only one fourth of what we planned to do is in the game."

He added that many of the stories "got full voice-overs" during the development phase, but they never got used. Hopefully, the team can find a way to use them in the future, but Odashima isn't quite sure how… More downloadable content, anyone? Although fighting games aren't necessarily expected to have great plots and in-depth character development, Soul Calibur had always put a bit more effort into these elements than other fighting franchises. Too bad it didn't all work out in the fifth installment.

It kinda annoys me read news like this. Why can't they just delay the game or add more resources to come up with their actual target? It may have meant additional investment on their end, but the possibility for them delivering a stellar game by doing that is a lot higher. No wonder SCV didn't do so well.

I guess you overlooked the part that said Namco pressured them to get the game out faster. It seemed like they really put a lot of thought into the story when they hyped it up the way they did; it's a shame they had no choice but to ultimately cut it down. I hope there's a dlc for it 😛

Thats sad… When I hear news like this I always wonder whats the rush. I still haven't picked up SCV yet. I always enjoyed SC but IV was a bit disappointing. 2&3 will always be my favs.

SC 2&3 are the best. I prefer 3 to 2, but love them both. SC3 had all the stories, Chronicles of the Sword, Create a Soul, and as many single player game modes as you could shake a stick at. Sc2 had great story mode too, and tight gameplay. 4 missed the boat on story almost entirely.

Man when will they make an HD collection of these amazing fighting games. If they balance it a bit and add a good online component that would be an super sweet ass fighting game package.

You've got to have a publisher willing to let you work until it's done or you get crap like this happening.

Sad too because the story mode had potential. It was great for the 2 characters it focused on, so I can only imagine how it would have been. What I mean by great is the story itself was well planned for the 2 characters available, however, it did lack depth in terms of RPG elements.

I wonder if they had also planned on having different weapons with stats as well. If they had added those, plus having story for all characters, it could have been great. Too bad it failed. My main character (Leixia in this one, Xianghua in previous ones) was gimped too, which makes me sad ;(

This is why publishers should be more reasonable with developers when discussing release dates and number of staff required to perfect the game.

I'm quite surprised Activision hasn't tried to annualise Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo, so I guess Acti really do know what they're doing.

this is whats really starting to hurt allot of games this year!
almost every game released this year just feels unfinished.
there good games but they just feel like there lacking allot of content.
developers need to grow some f*cking balls and stand up to publishers and say look if you want me to put my name on this i need more time to bring it upto my standards!
im sick of games being rushed just to hit the release date!
ME3 is the best example of that.
one freaking awesome game, but it has to be the most unfinished game ive played in a long long time!
everything screams rushed!
which is pretty pathetic considering it got delayed 4+ months it was originally set for late 2011.
i just miss the old days when developers released games when they were ready.
not when publishers said so.
publishers need to stop making games and leave developers to do their f*cking job!

developers make the game, publishers make sure it sells well!
so if that means spending a extra 6 months in development, and adding a extra 20% onto the budget then so be it!
its up to the publishers to make sure they get that extra 20% back either in game sales, or plush toys or DLC down the track.
publishers need to start doing their job and stop trying to do developers jobs!

it really hurts me to say this but we REALLY need another videogames crash!
its the ONLY way publishers are going to wake up and stop this insanity of rushing games!
as the saying goes you dont realize what you have till you loose it.
watch the industry collapse, then when it comes back to life watch publishers sit back and say ok take as much time as you want as long as its finished and customers are happy with it.
id hate to see that happen, but it looks like the only solution to stop this BS!

Soul Calibur V was such a disappointment. They didn't need to revamp the cast, and then not revamp the cast!

They only added Patroklos, ZWEI and Ezio as unique characters.

Viola has some of Amy's moves but she is mostly unique.

I could have forgiven the crappy story mode if they kept the IV cast and added back the characters we lost from soul calibur III

Indeed, How about an HD remake of SC3?

I would prefer an HD remake of Soul Calibur III Arcade Edition.

I never got a chance to play the newly revamped Li Long and Hwang before they were dumped out of the IV cast.

Hwang and Li Long were my most requested characters.

I wouldn't mind Soul Calibur III ps2 version HD edition, but as I have never played the arcade edition, i would prefer that.

I seriously doubt they would have the time and effort to combine both versions into one game.

The characters in SCIII arcade have an updated movelist.

The best logic would make an SC HD collection that includes III ps2 HD and III arcade HD.

The thought makes me want to jump up and down.

Look at how awesome this is. Everytime I show this to people, they agree that Li Long would have been awesome in IV.

TWO NUNCHUKS!!!!!! Thats awesome! 😀

I played Soul Calibur III on the ps2 for months. The game may have been broken for tournament play but it was fun as hell. So much content, I think it has the most content ever put in a fighting game.

Honestly they just need to polish up already created content (SC1,2,3) and bundle with a good online and you have an amazing fighting game. Not that hard no need to make SC6 just go back to the basics and don't copy SF i can't stand it.

btw did taki ever make it into the game by some sort of dlc?

Not yet my friend. Don't expect it to ever happen. Possibly clothing for taki to customize Natsu but i think thats the extent of it. Only hope is for characters that are 'completely' missing (ex: zasalamel, cassandra, talim, seung mina, etc.)
