Yeah, most people already knew this was coming. But the official press release is here, so now it's like…uh…official.

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC (SCEA) has announced LittleBigPlanet Karting exclusively for the PlayStation 3. Sackboy and the rest of his cute, zany buddies will be hitting the track and of course, the patented Play, Create, Share philosophy will be featured. The game only has a relatively vague "2012" release window.

It'll boast competitive and cooperative karting fun in an atmosphere that is "unmistakably LittleBigPlanet ," with lush 3D worlds and even "objective-based missions, boss battles, and mini-games." Players will be able to customize their Sackboy and karts, and the level editor will encourage you to be very inventive: This will go beyond any karting game in the past, apparently, as we'll be able to devise our own rules and weapons, in addition to creating the actual tracks. Said SCEA PlayStation Brand Marketing Senior Vice President Guy Longworth:

"Since the launch of LittleBigPlanet, our community has provided incredible support, which can be seen in the more than six million levels and games that have been created and shared online through PlayStation Network, a truly wonderful accomplishment. Now, we're thrilled to bring PlayStation 3 owners the next Play, Create, Share experience, LittleBigPlanet Karting, a brand new competitive karting adventure that is sure to move this genre forward, providing endless entertainment for fans and newcomers, while resonating with every member of the family, young and old."

This one is currently in development at United Front Games and original LBP developer Media Molecule is involved in some capacity. We'll let you know when they start dropping media so you can have a peek.

as much as i LOVE lbp, i gotta say that i'm not as excited for this as i was for lbp 2. it looks a lot like mod nation, but with the lbp flair.

The Mod Nation point was exactly what I was thinking. Why make another kart racer with the "play create share" mantra when Sony already has a very successful one out there?

I was thinking the same the first time they talked about it, but did you see the latest trailer ? there's a LOT more than modnation.

Probably cause Modnation wasn't that good, it got boring after a couple hours and the load time were just horrendous.

I was rather excited when this game was announced, but now I'm not so sure. I really didn't like ModNation Racers at all, and since United Front Games is making this, I think I'm going to have to steer clear of this one.

Explains what UFG's exclusive was. Wonder why they decided to rebrand it, rather than expanding on Modnation… Sounds like it has a whole bundle of new features though, so it may well be worthwhile. Might pick it up when I get connected (how long have I been saying that now?)

You know why this exists? Modnation as a franchise failed.

This is what Modnation should have been from the start period, good to see they are finally going there.

i think $onys milking sackboy just a little too much!
why has $ony turned into nintendo?
come on, they hire one of the best developers out there, look at their previous work for true crime!
they could of hired them and done a new IP with it, or something, anythings better then this kids crap!
hands up who spent 300+ bucks on a ps3 for a mario kart wannabe.
oh dear thats not going to be a big seller now is it!

Ugh looks fine, but I'd actually be excited for this if it wasn't for the existence of Modnation Racers. MNR is (minus its stupid story, the actual story not the campaign) a very good kart racer that's exclusive for PS3. Maybe having the LBP name will sell a few extra copies than MNR, but I think whenever I need a kart racing fix, I'm not going to spend 60 bones on LBP Karting. Instead I'll stick with MNR which already has the play, create, share thing down. Quite frankly this is a completely unmotivated game, and doesn't really need to be made.

I wish the developers the best, and hope it does well, but this is one of the few Sony exclusives I will not be picking up.
