Just bear in mind that nothing is official and until Visceral or EA comes clean on the whole issue, it's all just rumor.

That being said, this rumor is gaining more steam with every passing day. When we first heard about the possibility of a Dead Space FPS, we were a little surprised, but not shocked.

Now, as noted by OXM , developer Visceral Games has a new job listing for a "multiplayer designer with extensive first-person shooter experience," and the ideal candidate must be an "avid FPS gamer." It also says the job is "a major opportunity to contribute creatively to an exciting IP." Notice it doesn't say " new IP;" it seems plain they're referring to an existing name.

Add this to another job listing posted last month, where Visceral asked for a lead multiplayer designer with "architectural knowledge and experience making realistic world levels." At the time, the project in question was referred to as a "thrilling online action shooter game." It doesn't say FPS like the most recent job ad, though. As far as Dead Space 3 details, all we know is that it takes place on Tau Volantis and will star protagonist Isaac Clarke for the third and last time.

But what if they turned this into an FPS? I mean, if you really think about it, based on what we've seen of Resident Evil 6 , Dead Space might be the only true "survival/horror" franchise remaining. Well, with the exception of Silent Hill , but we all have our reservations concerning new titles in that series…

Depends on what type of first-person shooter. If they change the gameplay to be more on-rails, kill anything that moves, zero suspense/zero scares first-person shooter (e.g. 'Fear 3') then yes, obviously we have a problem.

However, if they simply change game from third-person to first-person then I don't see a problem with that. 'Amnesia: The Dark Descent' and 'System Shock 2', two games MUCH scarier than any 'Resident Evil'/'Dead Space' title I've played were both set in first-person.

Again, all that matters is, how much first-person shooter would they make 'Dead Space 3'?

No… you can't switch genres in a numbered title without losing your entire fan base.

@DrRockso87 – I agree. Amnesia is just awesome, and System Shock 2 is still up in my top 5 games of all time as I still play it at least once a year. But I also agree with World that player perspectives shouldn't really be changed unless there was some real problems with it in the first place, which there wasn't. Now if they add a setting in the options to pick which perspective you want, then I don't have a problem with that at all.

How do you explain the success of Dynasty Warriors? First one was a fighting game, all others after that became Hack N Slash.

Because there aren't enough FPS's on the market already.

Well so much for me playing part 3 then. I know I'm missing out on some great games but I just can't stand FPS games. I've played a few but just can't get into them. Too bad too because I really enjoyed the Dead Space games. They always gave me a good startle while playing late at night with the surround sound on and lights off.

I'm with u mate, that's what I do when I play the Dead Space games, lights off but I put on my earphones (headphone jack in TV) instead cause I want the sound to be in me and don't want to disturb others.

Yes, right now just a rumor and hopefully stays one that never comes to reality…in my opinion at least. As others have said, if it ain't broken don't try and fix it.

I'll most likely still play it because I love the Dead Space franchise. However I would not be happy if it turns out to be major action FPS. Who knows maybe it's a branch off of the DS franchise. It really needs to stay 3rd person though as that adds so much to the game.

I actually would be really disappointed. There are a TON of FPS's out there right now, Dead Space was actually something original, why change that?

Although, I do agree with DrRockso in that System Shock and Amnesia were two of the scariest games I've ever played, both of which are FPS's.

I actually would like if they made the multiplayer FPS (expect when playing as the Necromorphs). That could be a cool mechanic to introduce. But only for multiplayer, not for the campaign experience.

Dead Space 3 a FPS? WTF EA? You don't have enough of those in portfolio already? If it is a FPS it will be the first Dead Space title absent from my collection. Microcrap and the COD affect continues to ruin the industry.

Not interested…

I enjoyed Dead Space 1 what I enojyed most was teh isolation. It made up for RE and SH's shortcomings in being a very suspenseful surivival horror. Why must DS3 be a FPS… What is the reasoning behind it? Becuase of titles like amnesia?

As a series it has been pushing it's luck already, in expanding the series to novels and cartoons. The only reason I put up with The Wii title was because I got it with DS2, but if they change the formular once again I will have to drop interest in the series.

I'd be okay with an FPS spin-off. I like the FEAR series but first person horror could definitely be done a lot better and my boys at Visceral could pull it off. I don't think they would risk pissing off all the fans by switching genres in the numbered titles. If they do the anger will be palpable across the internets.

I play Dead Space for the outstanding story and atmosphere. If I had my way I would keep the perspective the same. However, if they change the perspective then I am still buying this D1. I am addicted to the Dead Space universe and hunger for more. This would not destroy the personality at all. You know, this would probably make Dead Space 3 more scary! Because I loved the first two games so much, I hope they don't change a thing.

It's definitely one of the most terrifying games to ever be released, in my opinion. And it bleeds atmosphere on every level. If you have a surround sound system, then you will have the best experience. You're also completely helpless in the game as you have no way to defend yourself against the monsters as there are no weapons in the game. All you can do is run for your life. Your character also begins seeing things if you stay in darkness for too long but light sources are limited as you must find flints to light candles and the lantern you carry eats through oil which is also limited. It the best game in the series, which is four games long now, and the newest one in the series has been announced. A fantastic survival horror, with some puzzles thrown in.

FPS has become the most overused and overcrowded genre this generation. Games like Gears of War, Dead Space and Uncharted are TPS, and in my eyes are more successful because of it.

Why do I get the feeling that Dead Space 3 single player will be third person, while the multiplayer (I still don't understand the need for it, I never used my online pass for DS2) will probably be in first person?

No no NO NO! I hope this isn't true. Being an avid fan and having platinuming both titles, I would be so turned off. First person couldn't caputure the atmosphere of this series imo. If it is true, I hope it is only for multiplayer. I'd even be okay with it maybe having one or two intense shooting segments of the game to change up the pacing, but for the love of the lack of great TPS, don't make it the entire game Viceral.

I view Mass Effect and Uncharted as great TPS.

first off dead space IS NOT A SURVIVAL HORROR!
im sick of people calling it survival horror, its not!
its not survival because you have so much weapons, health items, ammo, you never feel underpowered which is EXACTLY what survival horror is about!
the enemies are not strong enough either, survival horror is suppose to be you up against a enemy 1000 times stronger then you.
like the executioner guys from RE, one hit your dead, 500000 bullets and there still going strong.
THATS survival horror!
dead space 5 or so shots and your enemies are dead, and they have to hit you a hell of allot more times then that for you to die!

not really horror either simply because i have read bed time stories that are scarier then dead space!
suspenseful, tense, yes,but not horror!
dead space has always been far too predictable, id set you up for a scare, clench your sphincter and throws it at you exactly when you expect it.
like the elevator level in dead space, your walking down a dark room the music starts, you tense up, you enter the elevator.
oh let me guess, the elevators going to start, then the lights are going to black out the elevator stops and a necromorph leaps forward and pries the doors open.
and what happened?
how can a game be horror, if you know exactly whats going to happen?

back onto the topic at hand, 2 different ways this can turn out.
depends on how you define FPS.
if they mean FPS as in a mindless shooter like L4D then visceral is going to burn down from all the flaming mail they get!
but they could do this VERY cleverly and have a dead space, same as the series has already had, but in first person.
now THAT would be interesting!
yea theres those who say horror cant be done in first person, but they said the same things about platformers and mirrors edge blew everyone away!
so why not do the same with dead space?
in fact bringing in a first person perspective could be the best thing for them to do for the series!

That's exactly what I expected. Dead Space was an action/adventure game, with a wonderful sense of isolation and tension. The Necromorphs were obstacles in your way, preventing you from accomplishing the various tasks you had to complete. Dead Space 2 was a shooter – walk down the hallway, get to the room, shoot the monsters, repeat 200 times. No sense of isolation, very few tasks to complete (other than going from point A to B and eventually Z), and shooting was really the whole point of the game.

The logical assumption is that they'll go even further in that direction with the next game. Which I'll maybe consider buying when it hits the bargain bin. Or maybe not. Sad considering I always list Dead Space 1 as being in my top 5 favorite games of this generation.

Well I'm less worried about the game turning first person and more about them turning the game into another online shooter considering the "multiplayer designer with extensive first-person shooter experience" they're looking for, now THAT would be a travesty. I don't see why they would make it first person, since the angle used is at least somewhat unique, but the original is basically like a foot away from being first person already, so for all intents and purposes it already plays like a first person game.

Caanimal

I stoped playing the Resident Evil and Silent Hill games because they got too far from the whole "horror & survival" thing. Dead Space as an FPS would be a rediculously stupid move by EA, but then again EA has already shown a penchent for making stupid moves…

Great news for Dead Space.

Dead Space is a shooter and thee only difference between it and other shooters is the camera angle. There is absolutely no need to render the main character in a game like Dead Space and since the primary gameplay element is to shoot and destroy necromorphs then you might as well do it in a first person perspective so you can aim more accurately.

Now I am not saying that third person perspectives are useless in games and I think that the Uncharted series shows why a third person perspective can be useful with all of the platforming elements in the game, or perhaps a game like Prototype or Infamous.

In games like Gears of War or Dead Space where there is zero platforming elements they could pull off an FPS or at least give us a way to toggle between first and third person perspective. A good example of a game doing this is the Elder Scrolls series and most people will choose the FPS because it makes it more immersive and allows you to use archery and spells easier.

Personally, I prefer to feel like I am the character in the game as opposed to watching a character in the game. Plus it helps boost your framerate when you're not having to render someone 100% of the time.
