Is it possible to have a "top" list when it comes to the worst? Isn't that a contradiction?

Well, whatever. In our estimation, here are the five worst games of the generation so far, backed up by our entertaining reviews. Prepare to be appalled.

5. Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire

It was one of the first games for the PlayStation 3, and it made us think we were playing a PS2 game . It looked like crap but worse than that, the gameplay was just ridiculously clunky and irritating; it was one of those titles that made you hope for a bad dentist's visit. Crossfire really was a technical nightmare, what with the terrible frame rate, awful control, and barren, boring landscapes. Honestly, I think this game made me hate mechs.

4. Quantum Theory

There was quite the saga surrounding this one. It was first supposed to be a PS3 exclusive (when it called only "Quantum") and then it got delayed to go multiplatform. When it finally did arrive, it was a disappointing mess . The concept was okay – essentially, it was a Gears of War ripoff – but the execution failed at just about every step. The minute you started having fun, you noticed another crippling, glaring flaw that made your teeth grind. It could've been so much better.

3. AMY

The most recent game on the list, it might be our biggest disappointment of the generation because our expectations were so damn high. Nothing is right here. The controls and camera are lousy, the level design is from 1998, and worst of all, it just isn't remotely frightening. The atmosphere does nothing. On top of which, the partner tandem idea could've been fantastic had the developers put any effort into making it innovative and compelling. But tragically, nothing good came of this and we were left shaking our heads.

2. Rogue Warrior

It's probably dangerous to say this game was horrifying trash because Dick Marcinko will probably show up at night and kill us, but we gotta say it. It was just ridiculously bad. Rogue Warrior felt like it had a $35 budget and a writer who perceived all Navy SEALs as being Type-A personality animals who can't say a single sentence without swearing. Toss in one of the worst first-person gameplay mechanics we've ever seen, and you've got a completely unbearable adventure.

1. Hannah Montana: The Movie

I'll be honest. I didn't even know what this was supposed to be. I guess I failed in my attempt to squeeze into the skin of a 9-year-old girl, or something. All I know was that this game failed in just about every way possible , and that isn't easy to do. Hey, I didn't have anything against Hannah Montana at the time (despite the fact that it was obviously another pre-packaged teen idol with little talent for teeny boppers). I can appreciate games that aren't made for me, provided they're decent . This…this was just a nightmare . I can still hear the sugary lyrics in the back of my brain…

Okay, I'm done with this slimy trip down memory lane. 🙂

What's wrong with 1998 level design?

Anyway…yep. That's about right. Can't forget that werehog Sonic game, though.

All the sonic games sucked this gen with the exception of sonic generations and the ultimate genesis collection.

You really need it explained why a game released in 2012 with a level design similar to what was being done in 1998 is a negative?

Lol Ben what games didn't make the list are barely missed your top five.
Samarui Shodown Sen was one of the worst games I played this gen.

I'm pretty sure World played and beat Quantom Theory which gives him some street cred I suppose.

I personally found Dark Void to be one of the worst games I've played this generation. Another game I do believe World finished and actually praised somewhat.

I did enjoy Dark Void for its full 3D jet pack based combat and clear attempts to be like uncharted. The voice of Nolan North helped. And just as I foretold, the vertical combat mechanic from Dark Void WAS implemented in Uncharted 3.

I must thank World for turning me on to Dark Void. I got it dirt cheap. It's not a terrible game…it just needed a little more polish. Okay, a lot more polish. I also think World's comparisons to the Uncharted series are spot on. Did UC3 steal the vertical combat concept from Dark Void? They are pretty darn similar when you think about it.

Anyone here remember that overhyped shooter? HAZE?!

I only played the demo but it didn't seem SO bad, I think big letdowns are different from really bad games often.

Hey, Haze wasn't really that bad a game(other than some idiotic stuff going on like a vehicle getting stuck inside a torn section of the background, LOL).

Anyway, I actually wish someone good, like Crytek, would take on Haze again so the franchise could continue.

Haze was overhyped but it wasn't that bad. The biggest problem in the game for me was that as soon as I got into it, it was over. It wasn't great and I won't defend it as being good, but it wasn't Terrible. Idk even know if it would make a top 50 worst games this generation list. There's some bad ones out there, more so there's a lot of major disappointments.

I didn't think Haze was bad, average maybe not bad. Now the Iron Man movie game that was bad game.

Yes I played and beat Quantum Theory just to spite that piece of crap, the best comment that a fellow gamer had related my experience to Mark Wahlberg in the Other Guys showing how he learned all these ballerina dance moves just to rip on the guys in balet class, which I found hilarious.

Hell, I have the pain of 3 of those, Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire(un-played in huge backlog), Quantum Theory(un-played yet), & Rouge Warrior(painfully played)

Here I thought that it was just due to a hidden cavity, but no that you mention them, they probably combined to cause that cavity.

I can't agree or disagree here. I havnt played any of those games, and most the games I have about 90% of them are all good. I pretty much just stick to what I know I'll like.

Off topic, kinda. I clicked on the hanna montanna link and scrolled down to the comment section of the page and must i say, Ben… Your website has come a long way since then… Since "first!" Comments back them musta been a pain, huh?

Not really. We never had too much of a problem with "first" comments. But at least now most of the OT discussion going on in news threads has moved to the forums, which is good.

rouge warriors definitely the worst ive played this gen!
i was really excited for the game i was expecting another secret agent type game but more gritty, and all i got was a really bad poorly polished mindless shooter!
actually i dunno, naughty bear i think was actually worse.
my god just thinking of that game makes me shiver.
at least rouge warrior had a decent premise, and there were no game breaking bugs.
naughty bear though was about the stupidest thing ever, i mean a game thats about a bear who did not get invited to a party so he kills every bear?
seriously?
how the %$#@ did they convince someone to publish that tripe!?

another game that should be on there is fairytale frights.
not as bad as naughty bear or rouge warrior, but still one massive heap of tripe!
DNF was not exactly a great game either…….
actually playing through that again i got it and the DLC off steam for 10 bucks!

Trying to think of a top 5…

Unreal Tournament III – I could barely play this. There was a mission where you had to take over a line of bases from one end of the map to the other. Everytime I took over a base the enemy would take it back over, I was stuck on this mission for over an hour and just never played it again.

Condemned 2 – Bought this up for cheap, played it for about 5 minutes the gritty bland enviroments never caught my interest.

Sonic Unleashed – The Wherehog stages! my god the wherehog stages. It's a real shame because Sonics 3D levels are superb, but it is not worth going through the sluggish agony of the wherehog. Sonic Generations beats this in everyway now.

Silent Hill: Homecoming – Another sluggish game, Silent Hill has just lost it.

Resistance 3 – A real let down, it lacked the depth of the previous 2 games. You learnte nothing about the Chimera this time, it was just a simple destory the base mission.

While these might not be the worst games this gen, they're are the games I have been most disappointed with.

Condemned 2 – wow that game scared me! I stopped playing right after the first few enemies cause I found it to be far too horribly scary! lol I am such a chicken when it comes to scary games.

Due to my almost slavish relationship with metascores before buying anything, I am happy to say that I have not bought a single game that I can think of now that were scandalously bad.

The worst games I've had for the PS3 has all been at least worthy of a 7/10. Not that a 7 is that good, but at least it's not epic fail.

I got Jurassic park for free because I was a PS plus member. That game has to be the worst I have played this gen. I'm kind of like Beamboom. I use metacritic a lot and I stay away from games with bad scores.

What's also messed up about these garbage games is that they cost $59.99 when they 1st came out. Same as a really good game. There seems to be no standards when it comes to video games. If a game gets a 9.0 rating and another gets a 3.0 rating they both cost the same on launch day. So by these standards a New KIA should cost the same as a New Corvette.

Yes, but the games that get panned almost always drop in price drastically and immediately.

I'm trying to remember what band it was that refused to see Hannah backstage at some music awards show. Oh yeah, it was Radiohead. Hannah was pissed and told somebody she was going to ruin them. What an ego!!!

Radiohead is a pretty reclusive band in the first place so she should not have taken it so personal. Radiohead actually has some talent as well. Paranoid Android is probably their best song.

lol how dare you put Amy on the same list as rogue warrior and hannah montana… is amy great? FAR from it… but does it deserve to be on the same list as abominations like rogue warrior and hannah.. definitely not :p

btw where is Haze, Lair and termination salvation? :p

I'm going to go with games I've actually played. So for me, I'm sure my top 5 include games that aren't ALL that awful. But again… only because I'm going with games I've played.

IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER:

– Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire
I'm going with Ben on that one. One of the first PS3 games I owned since I got PS3 at release. It was horrendous. I did the initial level fought my way through the first real mission (fought through the controls I mean) and then promptly sold it before more people figured out it was awful.

– 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa
What an uninspired and disappointing soccer game. I love soccer more than any other sport. I love other Fifa games. I played soccer in university as a varsity athlete. By all rights, I should have adored this. But there was just nothing attractive about it. I dunno why, but it just did nothing for me. Felt really lame.

– Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires
Jump, smash, jump, smash, jump, smash, jump smash…… <— all you need to know to win EVERY single fight in this game.

– Knights Contract
I already not a fan of QTE's, but admittedly when done right, it can work. But on harder difficulties, this game is stupid hard. You not only had to hit the button at EXACTLY the right time, you had to hit it perfectly before it even shows you what you have to hit. If you fail? Game over against some bosses! You don't get a chance to re-do the QTE shortly after… no… it's GAME OVER. Either that, or the boss gets like… all their health back. To make matters worse, sometimes the game will hit a lag during those sequences making it literally impossible, so even people that CAN do it, can't do it every time. Sometimes it loses sync, as well, so it waits for your imput NOT at the time it shows you or has volume for. Just awful. And it was so different from the gameplay of the REST of the game. There's absolutely no learning curve to figure out how to master it.

– Call of Duty: World at War
I went back to this after Black Ops came out, to be honest. But only because people would say it was so amazing. But I couldn't believe this was even released THIS GENERATION. I already had issues with MW2 and BO. But I at least enjoyed those games. By the time I got to [email protected], the multiplayer was so hardcore hacked, it was unplayable. And the grainy graphics was like something from last gen or puke. Either one. I want to go with throw-up. It wasn't even good for a PS2 game. I'm convinced people "liked it" as an outlet to hate on MW2 or BO. Because it's shit. The original Killzone was better, even. *grumbles and walks away*

Those are my picks. Again, they aren't the worst PS3 games. But they're my worst experiences that I've played. Everything else people have mentioned or Ben said I avoided to begin with. So….

you thought [email protected] was bad?? you clearly don't have taste in games. technically i can see why, but other then that i don't see how its bad the story was amazing in that game.

Underdog15
Underdog15

An unplayable multiplayer, to me, quantifies "bad". And since "taste" is entirely subjective, I'll give you a pass on that one.

Besides, I have every right to indicate what my top 5 worst experience this gen have been. And [email protected] was a negative experience. I said more than once I was only referring to game's I've played. Sure, I think there are other games out there worse than the ones on my list, but I never played them… so for that reason, they weren't negative experiences since they weren't experiences to begin with.

People on this site talked about how [email protected] was this great game that MW2 and BO could never live up to… but it was a chore. And the multiplayer is literally unplayable.
