I'm taking bets on this one.
I'm always on the lookout for a fantastic story and this year, I have every confidence that Bioshock Infinite will deliver an excellent plot and interesting characters. It might be about as well written as one can expect from the video game industry today (don't misinterpret that).
There should be some stiff competition, as I've always said the storylines in Grand Theft Auto are underrated, so GTAV is a definite contender. Then there's Mass Effect 3 , which is bound to have a fantastic story, but based on what I've read, I get this feeling that hardcore fans of the franchise might be split on the end result… Hard to say. Perhaps the wild card is Naughty Dog's The Last Of Us , which could feature an incredible story, but we're not even sure it'll launch in 2012 . Max Payne 3 is another possibility.
The bottom line, however, is that Bioshock has always boasted amazing, memorable stories. In some ways, I put them on the same level as Metal Gear Solid , because they're just so damn engrossing. Bioshock doesn't focus as much on non-interactive cut-scenes, but the games consistently make you aware of the plot with beautiful pacing, excellent voice performances, and an atmosphere that is second-to-none. I see all of that – and more – in Bioshock Infinite , which is why I'm so freakin' excited for that game. Fans of the franchise are on my side, right?
And by the way, anybody who calls it "just another shooter" gets swatted upside the head.
P.S. At one time in this industry's history, any Final Fantasy would automatically be in the running for story of the year. But as much as I love FFXIII-2…well, no.
