After rumors that THQ was canceling its entire 2012 slate of titles (which turned out to be false, of course), the publisher did announce that they're leaving one particular set of games behind.

According to a business statement , the Saints Row producer will be ditching the kids' licensed entertainment business and focusing exclusively on their core franchises and initiatives. No money in games for the young 'uns, huh?

THQ has distributed quite a few games for children in previous years, including a long line of Spongebob titles. But as CEO Brian Farrell said, the new THQ "will be a more streamlined organization" that will zero in on their strongest franchises. The key franchises in this case are the aforementioned Saints Row , along with UFC , Darksiders , Company of Heroes , Warhammer 40,000 , and inSane (film director Guillermo Del Toro's game). Lastly, the company said it plans to "establish new franchises on the next generation of game devices."

Yep, just another publisher looking forward to the future…obviously, the not-so-distant future, as companies continue to mention the next generation in statements and interviews.

"next generation of game devices"

They didn't say consoles, so I think that they are speaking more broadly of gaming devices including handhelds, smartphones and tablets.

I'm actually discouraged by this news. The thing is that while there is a great variety in the games being made, new ideas can flow. The kids games that were being made by THQ might not be what they consider core, but who's to say whether a developer working on one of those games might not take inspiration from that and turn it into something innovative in another title?

Plus I have to say that while I'm not the greatest fan of SpongeBob, their remaining line up of games is not entirely full of whimsical play…Saints Row, along with UFC, Darksiders, Company of Heroes, Warhammer 40,000, and inSane.

Out of those I would say that Saint's Row was about the most 'playful' of the titles, but they all sit firmly in that classification of games that I am not a fan of – gritty.

This is an excellent opportunity for me to ask: what exactly does "gritty" mean?
I have a vague idea but based on my understanding of the word I'd not call Saints Row gritty?

Saint's Row was the one game I identified as playful, it is – to me – the least gritty.

The question was not ironic, I meant it 🙂
I am genuinely unsure what it means. Does it mean more unplayful?
I thought it was more like "realistic/dark/serious/adult". Like the war themed games, who I've noticed often are called gritty. But none of those words describe saints row or even Red Faction Guerilla, so… So I ask. 🙂

Darksiders is more like Master's of the Universe (He-Man) than it is gritty. When I think gritty I think Killzone 1 and 2 and Motorstorm.

Beam,
You've got the right idea. Highlander doesn't like that sort of game, especially the blood and gore.

Yes I have looked up "gritty" now and it meant roughly what I imagined. But then I must object: there is no blood and gore in saints row, and it's definitely not realistic in any way whatsoever.
According to the dictionary gritty means something rough, raw, realistically depict, in a way the opposite of glossy is how I understand it. Saints Row is so glossy the eyes get sore from the gloss, and so silly it lose touch with reality right from the opening scene 😀
I'd say Saints is as gritty as pac-man.

Which is why I drew the distinction regarding saints row.

Eh, don't care. Nintendo seems to own that space for themselves anymore, shared only by the occasional outside effort by Sega or Sony. I think what they're really saying is, the Wii stole away the hearts of many kids and introduced them to world of crap shovelware. Game after crap shovelware game that we, THQ, helped create, so now that we razed down every confidence of trust in a game that doesn't carry the Nintendo label we'll pack our bags and go somehwere else. =p

agreed, leave the kids games to the kids at Nintendo who take ten years to make the most basic of games.

I haven't played anything from THQ since Titan Quest. I wasn't aware they had children's games. I just want Itagki's Devil's Third!! I wish them luck.

I lost my faith in THQ after the WWE Smackdown games got increasingly worse ever year after Here Comes the Pain, after they released the bug-ridden crapfest that's Homefront and after they drove Red Faction into the ground by turning it into a rushed third-person GTA-on-Mars rather than the innovative FPS series it once was. Keep making great decisions, THQ! Those crappy kid games are probably one of the only reasons you're even still around!

As long as they keep delivering the goods for us Saints Row fans they'll remain on my favs list no matter what else they decide to release or not.

Gotta love the Saints!

3.8 million units of SR3 shipped so far …SR4 seems likely.

During an interview with X-Play, THQ executive VP Danny Bilson revealed that Volition is already working on Saints Row 4.

Saints are great, I'm interested to see what is done with Darksiders II but hey what about Homefront? I know Crytek is developing but they should mention it!

Homefront wasn't as that bad, Just needed some more time in the oven. I say scrap Homefront and give "Frontline: fuel of war" another shot. Better story. Plus it ended on a cliffhanger.
Still can be to angry at THQ. Really glad we're getting followups to Company of heroes, Darksiders and Warhammer 40k.
Hey, THQ…The PS Vita is just screaming for some lovin'

Homefront 2 will be good with Crytek on the case.

Crytek is on Homefront 2? Jeesh, what have I been doing? Cool, I guess. I thought they were tied up with that stupid Kinect Gladiator Xbox game and, I presume, Crysis 3.

I wonder how THQ's "U-Draw Studio" system did, & whether or it's sales had a bearing on their decision.

It sold for $80 when it first came out, and last year I saw it discounted in stores for less than $30, which I was guessing was to get it out of their stores for good. Even GameStop had it selling for around $25.

In a word…horribly. So, yes, it probably did factor in the decision.

sweet!
this is exactly why i love THQ!
not only is every game they release really good, they actually learn from their mistakes too!
unlike other companies…….
$ony, M$, ubisoft, crapcom, $E, sega, you listening?
casual games have a place for them, its called the mobile phone!
or nintys devices, not on true next gen consoles!
