Okay, it has been a good year…a solid year, Square Enix. One year since we heard you'd officially unveil Final Fantasy Versus XIII with hordes of new information.

Guess that Final Fantasy XIII-2 project got in the way, huh? Well, at least we can squeeze a few updates out of producer Tetsuya Nomura, who gave Famitsu some fresh updates.

The list of information may or may not encourage long-time followers of the series. It looks all positive but it's also somewhat vague in regards to gameplay specifics, which is what we really want.

He wouldn't say when everything would be made official, but that's nothing new. The main question is, after FFXIII and FFXIII-2, will some of the annoyed fans get excited again for a game with "Final Fantasy" in the title? Or are they just waiting around for Kingdom Hearts III ?

"After FFXIII and FFXIII-2, will some of the annoyed fans get excited again for a game with "Final Fantasy" in the title?"

Uhhh… i was waiting for versus before i actually bought 13. FFV13, is the ultimate final fantasy. it is Square Enix's Jagurnaut game this gen. so many people have been aching and wanting this game.
i would pay over the regular price for it to an extent. that is how much my desire for it is.
This game is one of the top 3 reasons to own a PS3, one of the main reasons i bought a PS3.
so yes, i will buy the best FF game this gen without a second thought. 😀
So please, keep good news like this coming.

I can only hope so. From the 2 videos i've seen it looks great. If they stay true to what they have shown it'll sell big. It looks like fun (like KH was) and even if people hate i will still buy. Just like i plan to do with XIII-2

Seen and played are very different, as much as I trust Nomura no reasonable person could be anything but skeptical about games coming out of SE these days. Especially super-delayed ones like Versus. It could all go awry at any moment.

I hope World is wrong, but I'm not sure why people downvote him. He's got every good reason to say what he does. He's right. Insanely delayed games are a risk. SE has often released a game this gen that isn't anything like what we originally see from them in the original press releases.

Being cautiously optimistic is likely the wisest course of action. I'm not a fan of blind faith. Not anymore, anyways. There was a time when I would buy anything with Squaresoft on the box and it would be gold.

I impulse purchased Kingdom Hearts, Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve…. all because of the brand name of Squaresoft. Unsurprisingly, they all turned out to be gold and excellent purchases. I had never once heard of any of them prior to seeing the boxart in the store.

I wouldn't dare try that now.

or even these past…5.5 years.

I havent lost patience with SE when Nomura was being very specific with the watdrobe I knew it would be looong time. Versus and Last Guardian are the only exclusives I honestly care about and when they release it will be well worth the wait. Dont forget Nomura has also been working on KH 3D so XIII isnt the only hold up.

At this rate I imagine Versus and KH will go to PS4 in 2014.

Provided they don't, I've basically come to terms with the death of Final Fantasy as a fantastic game and am starting to accept it as a "good" franchise I intend to keep playing.

I sure hope Versus does something awesome and new with the series, but it's possible the western poison SE took has gone too deep. If so I'll enjoy it like FFXIII-2, as something roughly resembling a JRPG.

Wait, you hope it does something awesome and new with the series?? All I hear about 13 is they ruined it because its not like the other FF games. So which is it? You want FF back the way it used to be, or you want something new? Didn't you get something new with 13??

Underdog15
Underdog15

13 didn't offer much of anything new. The franchise has always had different battle systems with each new entry. That's not "new" at all. It's expected. What it did, was take everything away like towns, exploration, complexity, etc. etc. etc. (The list is large and has been hashed here many times now)

MyWorstNightmar

Under, thank you for the lesson in semantics.

So let's get this straight. You described what Square did to FF with 13 was take away towns, exploration, complexity, etc, etc, etc. For better or worse, it sounds like they tried something new.

Underdog15
Underdog15

Assuming you're right and the removal of features can be considered a "new" way of developing a game in a well established franchise, then you would seem to understand the meaning of semantics, but then certainly not the meaning of redundancy. I say that, because in light of whatever semantics I bring up, your rebuttle retains the same, if not more severe, version of your own semantics.

If you applaud taking features away as "doing something new", that's your business. I on the other hand, see it for what it is. And that is that they removed features, and anything "new" is just a watered down version that has less deapth of any previous entry in the franchise's existence.

Lazy and/or poor design choices should not be applauded in the name of being "different". It should be judged for what it is within it's own merrit… and what it is…. is ill-contrived, shallow, and has no more fleshiness than a starved Kate Moss. Sure, it LOOKS kinda attractive, but there's no substance to love at night, and you're not making love children; you're just grinding bones. And it's painful. Sure… you want very badly to enjoy it. And it's Kate Moss… so you think you SHOULD enjoy it… but you just can't. And the reason is simple. There is nothing thirst quenching or satisfying about it. It's just pain in a pretty little wrapper.

If that's not, as a minimum, trying to either applaud their attempt or give them an approving nod for trying, I don't know what is. It's the same as saying, "But at least they tried! You should acknowledge that!" Which is applauding an attempt.

Sorry for interpreting your comment for exactly what it said.

Um no. It is an aknowledgement of something new, but when you say for "better or worse", that couldn't be any more of a nuetral comment. Neither supporting nor attacking.

At any rate, we are very far away from my original question to World in which you misenterpreted my position.

"The main question is, after FFXIII and FFXIII-2, will some of the annoyed fans get excited again for a game with "Final Fantasy" in the title?"

Why wouldn't we be excited for it?

I don't think we should be this quick to dismiss the series entirely, just for one or 2 games that weren't up to par. Especially considering all the greatness that came from the series (up until XII (included), as far as i'm concerned).

How would this attitude towards the series be considered fair and reasonable?

People are so quick to call doom and gloom in this current age, it's kind of sickening (not targeting this at you, Ben. ^_-).

That being said, people were pretty vocal about XIII's flaws, and S-E was given a really clear picture of what the fans are expecting from a game with the name Final Fantasy in it. Judging from what I know about XIII-2, I think it's obvious that they did listen.

Now I'm crossing my fingers that Hiroyuki Itō's team (VI, IX and XII) will be the one handling XV.

Don't doubt the power of the game, doubt the reasonable actions of its owners. XIII was a series low. Okay cool, let's move on to something new right? (Nah let's squeeze a few nickels out of XIII by adding a sequel) Okay a few good things are back but this game won't fix what was perpetrated. Then there's XIV, a train wreck mixed with a car wreck.

SE needs new leadership to fix what they've done to the greatest gaming franchise of all time.

@World Versus is still a spin-off title and even if it's more reminiscent of Final Fantasy than 13, there are going to be obvious departures. I don't think going into Versus as if it were a main entry in Final Fantasy would be a good idea. I think Nomura himself is quoted as saying something similar. The game is looking to be a great game and I don't doubt that it will be but I won't go into thinking it's going to define the franchise as FFVII did.

I'm sorry, but stating Versus is more of Final Fantasy than XIII is a flat out lie. This is the biggest departure I have seen within a Final Fantasy title. It's clear that it is an action orintated game with RPG elements. I'm just very suprised with all the criticism XIII gets and most fans just turn a blind eye when it goes to Versus a game we have not even played yet.

Granted, it looks like a great game and I can't wait to finally get my hands on it. But all these people boycotting to it because they disliked XIII is senseless.

@ Ultimadream

Other than the battle system, that we're told will be more action oriented than the rest of the series, even though we don't know yet how that will turn out in the end… What makes you see that it's a bigger departure from the main series than anything you've seen?

There are at least 2 things that make a comeback, that were missing from the series since X: a world map, and controllable airships.

Now tell me, what elements other than the battle system you know next to nothing about make you think it is a bigger departure than anything you've seen within a Final Fantasy title?

@Ultimadream
I would argue that either Crisis Core or Dirge of Cerberus were bigger departures. But no one cares since it's not a numbered entry. People got in a tiff about XI being a numbered entry as an online game, as well.

@World
I think you're right about new leadership. After XIV crashed and burned, they got an entirely new development team, including new leadership (including a resignation). As a result, (I've been following their updates and fan feedback, and I played it until they started charging again) it's dramatically improved and looks pretty decent. They really fixed it…. but not until they got new leadership!

At every bad decision that SE has made (not just FF, either, folks. Remember Front Mission: Evolved?) this gen, Wada has been at the helm of the decisions and defended them publicly. SE's greatest successes this gen have been developed by other developers… when SE was ONLY the publisher. (See: Deus Ex)

Fellas (and ladies), I'm with World on the cautious optimism.

@Ultimadream I said more reminiscent (i.e. world map, airships, monster design, Kazushige Nojima) which imo makes it more Final Fantasy like so to speak. You may think differently but that's just my personal opinion. Playing 13 as I did and enjoying it as I did, I still felt like it just wasn't Final Fantasy. The biggest departure in Versus 13 is the setting and combat which isn't that big of a problem for me. I trust that the battle system will be great as I am a huge fan of any Kingdom Hearts game I've played.

I don't think Final Fantasy 13 deserved the backlash it got either but when a series essentially devolves, it's going to hear something from it's fanbase.

My wish is that Nomura ends up replacing Kitase as the lead of Production Team 1, once he shows the whole world what a modern FF must be with his Versus. Kitase has run his course now. And Toriyama? He never should have been involved with the series to begin with.

If not Nomura, Hiroyuki Ito should be the one. That would be even better to me, considering that he's responsible for my all time favorite games in the series (VI, IX and XII).

I like how VI regularly mixed up the gameplay throughout. It wasn't just battles and cutscenes. It had a ton of good things. I think VII took a lot of cues from the new things VI did, though. VII did well to add a variety of vehicles and chocobo breeding (and racing).

I'm surprised your fav dude didn't add an auction house to XII! lol. There was an auction house in both VI and IX.

Actually, Nomura said KH3 will happen and it will be the end of the Xehanort saga but not the end of the series. KH3D is supposed to be the last spin-off/sequel before KH3. But he will not start on KH3 until FF Versus is completed.
