Square Enix Teasing More Final Fantasy Versus XIII Info

Although we haven't seen anything for nearly a full year, Square Enix insists the team is still "working hard" on Final Fantasy Versus XIII .

It's a generally accepted idea that once Final Fantasy XIII-2 is out the door in both Japan and North America, we'll start seeing an influx of media and info concerning Versus XIII . And that might be very true.

According to what Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase told EDGE magazine , fans shouldn't be worried that the long-awaited game has hit a snag:

" …then there’s Versus XIII, which is currently in development. We released a trailer in January and since then there has been nothing, but I can assure you the team is working extremely hard on it and I think people will be excited when they next see it. "

If we wanted to dissect that statement, we could say that Kitase and Co. have a few surprises in store for us…i.e., that Versus XIII might look a little different than the last time we saw it. Perhaps it's just the way the comment reads. Regardless, we should start seeing new details; FFXIII-2 launched in Japan last month and is slated to hit store shelves in North America on January 31. That's only a few weeks away now.

So after that, we can finally get a big unveiling, right? Right ?

Hard at work on FF vs XIII huh?

Despite being able to announce, create and released a handful of games before anything concrete about this game is released. As well as being able release FFXII-2. (Yes, I know its basically using the same engine as regular XIII, but still.) Sometimes, I wonder if S-E can even deliver anymore…

Yeah it's just a repeat of how it was around the time FFXIII came out.

Starting to doubt we'll ever see this on the PS3.

Ugh, if they go multi-plat, there better not be any standardizing to the 360s standard. This game better be pushing every possible ounce of the PS3 and its disc. The 360 version can have their sub-par port with multiple discs. I don't want them delaying this game any longer because of having to make this game work for the 360 like it does for the PS3, which isn't even possible anyway. Plus, I want as much CG cutscenes as necessary.

Seriously, FFXIII was delayed because M$ demanded simultaneous release, and that delayed was because it was for the optimization for the 360's version. SE better not pull this off again, or I'm officially done supporting them (bargain and used purchases for the future), and hopefully Team Nomura will leave. SE, you're on my last straw.

HMMMM,
All Kitase's information-less talk reminds me of the whole premise of the Seinfeld shows….

"Versus XIII might look a little different than the last time we saw it"?

I don't know if that's good or bad, but to me it sounds bad.

Noctus will be changed into a happy, carefree high school girl.

I'm cool with that, plus that would probably mean more j-pop and less western appeal.

ZenChichiri

You're right. It might make them not try to Westernize everything. But it would also be a let down after introducing us to how awesome Noctis originally looked, which is distinctly Japanese anyways.

they mean graphics had to be dumbed down to make it look the same as the 360 version. then after that, most of the team leaves square enix to join level 5.

One thing I hate about recent j-pop is the singing. How come Japanese lyrics translated into English are SO unbearably lame? Just give me instrumentals and I'll be happy.

@underdog

i think its because whoever translated it just took the easy way out and just translated the words. pretty much what they did with white knight chronicles 2. if they're not going translate the song the right way, not a word only translation, then just let me have the music.

People should realize that Kitase is not the main head of FFv13, Tetsuya Nomura is, in fact I read somewhere that the reason its called "versus" is because Nomura wanted a different direction with Final Fantasy compared to Kitase's~ So those who hated Kitase, rest assured~

This also means another thing, full development for FFv13 will most probably start 100% once Kingdom hearts 3D is finished since Nomura and many of his KH team is the one involved in FFv13. So my bet is wait after KH3D is finish then we'll see lots of FFv13.

he may be the main head of versus 13 but wada is the head of the whole company. unfortunately for gamers, he likes making idiotic decisions.

True. But Nomura has supposedly threatened consequences if Versus went multiplat. And Square-Enix is already in dire financial straits as it is. The last thing they need now is more bad publicity. And Nomura (and possibly at least some of his team) leaving in anger would undoubtedly fit the bill. Such a development would almost certainly cause their stocks to take another hit.

I remember when this was announced I was so happy I had my PS3 so I could play this game. I was lucky because I was an early adopter and it was going to pay off.

That changed later however but I was lucky to get into the likes of Uncharted, Batman, Demon's Souls, and Resistance while waiting for this game. It's almost time for a generation change, and we still don't have much on this game. Sad really, but a part of me is still excited.

Can I guess which part?

The part that knows that it's a separate team than the FFXIII one. That and they have a proven track record with Kingdom Hearts. Let's hope they can pull it off =)

ZenChichiri

Also, I should add in my illogical reasoning as well. My logical reasoning tells me the reason above: that it's Nomura and his KH team which hasn't been blemished like the XIII team. My illogical reasoning is that when I saw the first trailer for it, it really gave me goosebumps. It looked awesome! Then the extended version came out and my jaw dropped. It looked slick, and if you could do half of what was shown in the FMV, then that would make for solid gameplay. That excitement I got from that trailer, while a little more faint now, still heavily lingers. They're taking a long time with it, which makes me worried about conflicting design choices the team might be having, but the illogical person in me still hopes they can capture the essence that was the first trailer we saw.

Also, I guess I kind of shoved that answer down your throat. What's your guess? 😉

Square-Enix has all the tools to deliver but they always seem to fall short for stupid reasons. Maybe no publicity is a good thing for the dev team: Just focus on making the games. It could be that they actually have some creative freedom! Hopefully anyway.

And it will be a late-gen RPG, which is the best kind. I am confused as to why it's taking so long, though.

BTW I like the notion of Noctis becoming a carefree high school girl. It would certainly be a character that hasn't shown up in many realistic RPGs. With the kind of violence and "Real world RPG powers" I'm expecting, maybe a realistic depiction of a fairly normal person in crazy land could be really cool. I mean, the "real world" usually doesn't have guys with 8-buckle overcoats, laser arms or giant swords.

Would be nice to see, hmm?

ZenChichiri
ZenChichiri

Real world in Japan =/= real world in Western society. In Japan, how many buckles you have is in direct correlation with how powerful you are.

Seriously though, when they say real RPG, I believe they mean a world rooted in the real world, but with a Final Fantasy look and feel to it, especially with the characters. Kind of like Midgar was an evil corporation bound to ruin the planet through over use of Mako, Versus will have similar themes, while retaining an interesting and possibly unbelievable set of characters. While the theme is rooted in the real world, we'll still see people with giant swords and belt buckles, which is a style distinctly Japanese anyways which doesn't really bother me.

I just hope the story is great, and the gameplay does something distinctly unique when it comes to action RPGs. I want to do some of the things Noctis does that we saw in the trailer where you can teleport to where you throw your sword, and switch to multiple weapons as they're zipping around you deflecting bullets. I really hope they can capture this.

Hey, ZenChichiri! Do you remember them speaking of Ex-Arts? Ohh yeah, baby! That's the mechaninc that will let you do exactly that.

Teleport to your enemy, slash the hell out of him and basically keep wrecking havoc as only the "royalty" would be able to.

I can't wait to see the premise which was described as "a prince with a depressing weight on his shoulders of being the defender of crystals".

Damn. Grown ups can finally immerse themselves into "a fantasy that's based on reality" xDD See what I did there xDDD

@johnld

I don't know if I would say "most" of the fans. But definitely a large and significant number of them, that's for sure. Versus is probably Square-Enix's last and best chance to win them back. If they screw this one up on the other hand there's really going to be hell to pay. Faith in them is already at an all-time low and rightfully so. The last thing they need is yet another significant push in that direction.

true, but you have to admit that final fantasy versus 13 isnt really a traditional final fantasy game. spin offs are fine but fans came from the traditional numbered final fantasy.

Looking Glass

Spin-off or not, Versus still bears the Final Fantasy brand name. So if it turns out to be a hit (which it very well might) that can only help the brand name. And that's certainly help that the brand name is in need of at the moment.

by the time they show it there will be no one left to be excited!
only square could announce a game and show nothing but 2 trailers in 6 years!
and announce multiple games and release multiple games in the meantime.
ive lost all interest in this game!
hell, ive lost all interest in $E!
only thing they could do to win me back is announce KH3, but that will never happen!
for some reason since 2 released a law passed saying KH is restricted to portables…..
sigh.

well, it does take some time to put an xbox 360 logo in the game. thats the only reason i can think of why we havent heard anything about. a press conference where they can say that versus 13 will release simultaneously for both systems with minimal graphical differences.

versus 13's launch date will be when ps4 releases while still being a ps3 game.

I remember a topic earlier when SE announce they will shorten the cycle of producing new games – and people started complaining saying they're trying to be western bla bla bla…

But its funny we also hear people complain when their games take long time to produce~

Anyway, people should realize the reason the game is not under full development yet is because the main head of FFv13 (Tetsuya Nomura) is currently working on KH series~ why cant people see that point? Just let Nomura finish KH3D then he'll start working on FFv13, if the developement's still slow at that time then its logical to complain~

Teddie9
Teddie9

If that is truly Nomura's plan than it is ridiculous of them to act like their hard at work on v13. For them to continue to speak of it and for it to be announced so long ago is what gives us reason to complain. That being that they should've started "full" development months ago. The LOGICAL thing for Nomura to do is to finish ffv13 before KH3D.

They need to fall somewhere in the middle though. There is such a thing as too short and too long. Give us quality once every 2-3 years. That sounds reasonable. Don't recycle junk every year and don't make us wait until the next ice age.

It may be illogical to say this, but I still have high hopes for Versus XIII, simply because I'm thinking of it as more Nomura and Co. rather than SE in its entirety.

I think that makes it more bearable 😉

Anyway, regardless of what anyone says, this piece of info has me hopeful again, making me seen somewhat bipolar, just because not too long ago I was insulting SE like they murdered my pet cat or something….

This better not be a multiplat. announcement, it's been such a long time, don't screw it up now. I do still have faith in Nomura and his team, they are all that is left to get Square's redemption.
