Guitar Hero went from being a billion-dollar franchise to pulling in only a few hundred million. In many ways, the franchise is dead and forgotten.

But Activision has often said they would reintroduce the once-blockbuster series when the time was right, and perhaps that time is just prior to the 2012 holiday season.

According to StickSkills , "someone close with Activision" has said a new Guitar Hero title will be on store shelves "before the holidays in 2012." The announcement should come around E3, and footage of the new entry will be presented at the show…if you choose to believe this inside info.

Many have taken jabs at Activision for the eventual decline of Guitar Hero ; pricey bundles, multiple spin-offs, and a general lack of innovation and reliance upon the name alone resulted in the franchise's tailspin. That's what most analysts will tell you. Some will even say Activision will allow the same thing to happen to Call of Duty , but it's almost impossible to imagine that multi-billion-dollar enterprise falling by the wayside.

So, do you want another Guitar Hero ? And if so, what sort of innovations and progress do you hope to see?

Guitar Hero is dead. If you're looking for a fun music game with a great track list. RockSmith is the way to go!
Only down side: You need a real electric guitar, cause this game will actually TEACH you how to play!

… And now, finally, Rocksmith *preorder* has started to pop up in the online stores here in Europe too. Really look forward to get it!

If this is true, I would say Activision is in denial. The craze is over.

Eh, haven't played a Guitar Hero game since 3. After that it was rehashed crap. Besides that music stuido in World Tour, that was kind of cool. However Rock Band has always been more enjoyable to their music library is so large. They don't need a sequel and they know it which is a good thing. All those songs are bringing the $$$ in

Hmmm, GH is dead and should not be resurrected. It will fail so meh. RB3 is king and I love it. Rocksmith is a great idea but I don't own a real guitar. I hope it does well and succeeds.

It's not that hard to imagine Call of Dootie going the way of GH. Activision will realease a new version every year till it finally completes it's goal, after finally milking the name for all it's worth they will layoff all employees and sell of the developer….it's what they do and they are becoming extremely good at it.

When will they learn?

Only way I see this working is if they do something like rocksmith and use a real guitar. The same old plastic guitar controller wont cut it.

Activision has been doing this for years. They run their business into the ground all the time! They're like the UPN of video games.

only thing that destroyed GH was the track list!
its called GUITAR hero not pop hero!
so why the $#@# is half the songs from MJ?
seriously!?
the original had such a freaking amazing sound track!
2 was ok, 3 was much better then the rest have been pretty craptacular!
sigh, i wish they would give us a HD remake of the ps2 versions then be done with it!
knowing antivision the next guitar hero will star lady gaga and god knows whatever else.
oh well, ill go back to my bubble now and wish we could see a pink floyd guitar hero!
now that would be SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!

GH *is* dead. We do need a new RB, though. Or at least a robust patch.

Rocksmith is great, if you already own an electric guitar and want to learn how to play it. If you want a fun game, it just can't offer everything RB3 does (including the ability to learn not just real guitar, but also real keyboards, drums, and vocals). Nothing beats the band experience of Rock Band.
