Ellie In The Last Of Us: “Sum Design Of Different References”

When we first saw the debut trailer for Naughty Dog's The Last Of Us , we were sufficiently impressed.

But we couldn't shake the sneaking suspicion that we had seen that girl somewhere before…and it didn't take long for curious gamers to note a distinct resemblance to "Inception" actress Ellen Page. So is Ellie based on Page?

Naughty Dog has already confirmed that the actress in question isn't voicing Ellie and as for the character's design, here's what the studio's Eric Monacelli said in response to a fan question at the PlayStation Blog :

"Ellie is a sum design of many different references."

Well, that isn't necessarily a "no," is it? Anyway, just so we're clear, Ashley Johnson voices Ellie in the game and officially, there is no connection to Ellen Page. Not like you should be disappointed; Johnson seems to be plenty capable in that role, just based on what we heard in the trailer. And if you hadn't noticed, Naughty Dog doesn't hire anything but excellent voice talent. All their actors and actresses are awesome.

The minute I saw the trailer, I thought of her. Inception didn't come to mind, though, Juno did. Anyway, voice actress aside, 'The Last of Us' looks to be yet a welcome edition to the Playstation family, and an intriguing title to the Naughty Dog family. I can't wait to see, and hear, more of this game.

Though, I wonder, does the success of Uncharted pressure them to make this title much more exciting and action packed or coming into this as a new franchise, are they looking to create something new? I don't know. What I do know, is that Naughty Dog are more then capable of making another hit title. I'd gladly support them on this, and any other future titles.

My main question about this game is that I womder if it is going to be as linear as the UC series has been. I tend to think a post-apocoplytic game like this should be more open and allow a lot more player freedom than Naughty Dog has given gamers in the past.

When 'Naughty Dog' is printed over the case, it doesn't matter.

I'm with you Excelsior, the description for the game to me has to have an openess otherwise I know I won't like it. I don't care if it is Naughty Dog developing it, post-apocolyptic/survival games need to be open or at least as open as possible. Be it through choices like in Heavy Rain, though it was fairly linear the choices made it feel like an open adventure. Or an open enviroment along the lines of Fallouts and Elder Scrolls games. In the long run I would like to see them put both aspects into the game to make a truely unique experience.

ND needs to just say the Ellie character is pretty much modeled after her. It is plain as day, and I understand that with 7 billion people on the planet that these characters are gonna resemble somebody, especially as the facial graphics are getting better and more realistic as time passes. This is the graphical leap I see coming with next gen consoles, less of a boost on general graphics compared to last gen, but I believe we will see a huge leap forward in details like the face and hands. The hands are what I look forward to simply because it is one of the hardest things to master in art.

I'll take a story driven game than an open world "freedom" game any day of the week. i like focusing more on the characters then looking for something miniscule in comparison to the games open world. its the reason i love uncharted series, its mainly about the characters and how they react to each other. open world games seems distant too me characterwise. exception is infamous series of course.

She could also pass as Elena and Nathan's daughter from Uncharted :p

I wouldn't be surprised if they drew the character design inspiration from Ellen Page. The resemblance is rather striking. And it wouldn't be the first time. Much of the inspiration for the appearance of Nate was taken from Johnny Knoxville.

Interesting… I don't think I've ever heard that about Johnny Knoxville and I'm a huge Uncharted fan. Where did you hear this?

cant wait for this!
ive always been wanting someone to take on the whole survival apocalypse concept but no one really has.
exactly why ive been looking forward to i am alive for so long, which has bloody been delayed AGAIN!
sigh.
i just hope it turns out as good as it could be.
nothing more disappointing then when a game comes out takes on a new concept and poorly represents it.
just makes other developers more reluctant on taking it on.
LA Noire for instance, they could of done so much more with it!
i really hope R* gives the license to someone else, we really need to see more games like it.
its got far too much potential to be stopped at 1 game!

Im really looking forward to this i will pre-order this as soon as I get the chance. Anything Naughty Dog does is worth a day one buy as long as it not milked *cough the Uncharted series and Uncharted 3 cough* cough* Im sorry there was no need for uncharted 3 after U2.
