During the Spike TV Video Game Awards, NetherRealm boss Ed Boon announced that his team was currently cranking on a project…and it wasn't called "Mortal Kombat."

Well, after the critical and financial success of this year's reboot , a lot of fighting fans were disappointed. They thought the studio was leaving MK behind and once again, an iconic franchise would go dormant.

But there's no need to cry yourselves to sleep. Boon tossed up a clarification on his Twitter page , much to the relief of all those fans threatening to slit their wrists:

"NetherRealm has a number of projects in the works. Not JUST Mortal Kombat. :)"

A little later, he responded directly to a fan by saying- "NetherRealm is working on MK and non-MK games!" It seems these guys have a few tricks up their sleeve, as Batman: Arkham City Lockdown is only the first surprise ont he list. As to the idea of a new MK powered by the Unreal Engine, Boon would only reply- "Hmmm…" See, Lockdown (for iOS) uses the Unreal Engine; that's why the question arose.

Wow, there are a lot of studios trying new things these days, aren't there? This industry sure feels healthy, doesn't it?

I'm quite surprised to be honest.

Respect to the companies that are taking risks, during these difficult times you would expect them to adhere to the tried and tested.

Admittedly I am a big fan of sequels though.

Why fix something that isn't broken?

When MK came out I pretty much stopped playing SSFIV..I'm curious to where they'll take the MK story..Playing the story in the current MK was epic for fans..

I was so close to buying Mortal Kombat, but the news of a special edtion on the way has now delayed that, however early 2012 is a busy time, FFXIII-2, Soul Calibur V, MGSHD Collection, luckily I already bought Catherine, but I dont know if I will have enough for MK straight away…

Lol.

No, this game is awesome. If there's anything that deserves an award for best remake (kind of) it would be MK9: staying truer and perhaps even better than the originals. However what I forget is that by keeping true to it's formula, that means taking in MK's cons too;

-Mehcanics are sh*t
-People are d*cks
-We now have the new intergration of online matches (and boy is the MK Network bad. If I had a nickel for everytime I've read "The game server is no long available" I'd probably have about $1O).
-Patches. Patches that make little differences of pure sh*t for online gameplay.
-Glitches. There are some funny ones, but most of them never seem to work in your favour (well you'd point them out playing this game because):
-The spamtastic rage inducing gameplay. This combined with 'Finisher' phases reinstates my second point to People You Don't Know or Will Never Meet are Dicks.

No game has ever made me unexpectedly break a controller before. The disc has dents from where my canines collided (yes, I actually bit my disc. Never done that before, either). It still works; go Blu-Ray.

Sometimes I hold the disc [even in content] and prepare to snap it just to free me from this curse. But I never do.

Too bad the game is fun and rewarding when you manage to learn or spice up new tactics or a new combo and accomplish pulling them off in the hellish conditions stated above.

I really want the next MK to have a role-playing element as MK: Deception did. With the PS2 MKs I never felt like improving on my gameplay tactics as I played it whilst mostly story driven.

"…first surprise on the list"*

I never got to pick up MK this year, sadly I expect I probably won't anytime soon either, too much money spent on other things ūüôĀ But maybe the next one I'll get to.
