Be careful, Konami. For the love of God…be careful.

We're not about to accuse you of becoming another Square Enix. No, it's far too early for that and after all, Platinum Games is the primary developer for the newly renamed Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance . Kojima Productions is still part of the project (apparently), but it's not like Hideo Kojima is making this game.

And with the "Solid" part of the title gone and the rumor that Kojima might be working on MGS5 or even Zone of the Enders 3 , Konami isn't in a terrible position. Not yet. But they should be wary about the wrath of the hardcore fan; this new game does have "Metal Gear" in the title and if you check around the Internet, those die-hard fans feel a little betrayed. It's important that you listen and respond to those fans who have adored the iconic Metal Gear Solid franchise.

I'm not saying they should cancel Revengeance because contrary to the popular opinion, I think the game showed promise (strictly from an action-oriented standpoint), and Platinum knows what they're doing in this genre. But storytelling isn't their forte, and with zero stealth and virtually no resemblance to MGS (besides Raiden's presence), Revengeance is going to ruffle some feathers. No, don't cancel the game; just be warned: you're treading on eggshells, Konami. A few followers are a trifle concerned.

Your saving grace right now is Kojima himself. No way MGS5 will be anything like Platinum's game, and if anyone knows his fans, it's this guy. We're convinced MGS won't suddenly become a series the long-time lovers hate ('cough' Final Fantasy 'cough') but this can turn into a slippery slope very fast. So just take this as a PSA, Konami. Keep it in the back of your mind, okay?

It's essentially why this game is being made by platinum games and not by kojima productions. I already knew by when they showed the first trailer for MGS5 Rising that there was going to be some changes to it. However, I didn't know Platinum games was going to pick up the game to be developed. Is that a good thing? sort of, Vanquish was a hell of a good game and it had a lot of value and I think it be shown here with this new name being Metal Gear Rising. I can see why fans are not happy with that, then again good choice by those who made the decision to change it.

And who knows I mean, Hideo Kojima could be creating a whole new game for the PS4, most likely though Kojima Productions are developing for PS Vita. Most definitely at this time, that's what they are focusing on.

Not as fast as SE but I think the scale is just about the same. MG(S) is a series TWENTY-FOUR years in the making and has had a winning formula. Then all of a sudden they drop this on us.

So what, you think MGS should stay the same for the rest of the universe?

I know people don't like change, but this game is a SPIN OFF.

Some view them as pieces of art. There for it's natural some would be more passionate than those who just see them as entertainment. MGS is like Van Gogh's Starry Night, Rising is like motel art.

And that is where your argument falls apart. Art is and always will be 100% subjective, one man's trash is another man's treasure. I don't like the idea of Rising any more than you, but it can still be high art to someone else.

Jawknee

It doesn't fall apart because I don't agree that all art is completely subjective. You can wrap a turd in a piece of tinfoil, put some earrings on it and claim it's art but it's still a piece of crap.

maxpontiac

Jawknee – Of course. Some may view it as such, but the fact remains that those who admire gaming as art sure get entertainment out of it.

My point was that video games should never become such a serious part of ones life. If something like Metal Gear Rising makes you mad, it might be time to find a new hobby.

Taking the Solid out of it makes perfect sense to me. It's not like Rising is supposed to be a continuation of MGS. It's a spin-off.

Metal Gear had two games, then they started off with Metal Gear Solid that had four games. I'm sure this Metal Gear Rising will have a sequel later on. I don't understand the hate about the naming of the title.

It'll be just as good as the other spin offs, like Metal Gear Ac!d, which was a card game.

LegendaryWolfeh

No offense to they 'die-hard' fans, but you're being ridiculous. Every Game series has a spin-off at some point, and that's not anything other than what this is. If you don't like it, don't play it. Don't purchase it. It's not MGS5, it's not TRYING to be MGS5. It's not being made my Kojima Inc. (anymore), so go ahead and assume it's not going to be a 'masterwork', though obviously it'll be a great game, just not in the genre you like. The only thing you have to accept is it is yes, in the Metal Gear universe, well no duh, it's supposed to be. But that doesn't mean everything has to be exactly the same if it's not part of the 'main series'. Personally, I can't wait because I actually enjoy Hack'n'Slash games, like DmC or Bayonetta, hell I even love Dynasty Warrior (though I haven't bought one in years since they ruined the character I like.) KK 🙂

C'mon now. You're better than that to call people who hold a different opinion than yours ridiculous. Just because you think it's all good and fine doesn't necessarily make it so. MGS is synonymous with quality. Metal Gear Rising Revengence oozes generic. It doesn't even have a good name. Revengence? That's not even a word not to mention it's redundant.

LegendaryWolfeh
LegendaryWolfeh

Maybe that's the point of the name? And I'm not saying their opinion is ridiculous for being different than mine, I'm saying for them to just straight up hate the game because it's not what they like is ridiculous. It's just the same as any rpg fanboy hating on a fps, or vice-versa. And how does it ooze generic? It's going to be slick, smooth, and it still has that sweet slicing mechanic. You make it seem like the people at Platinum aren't great at what they do. And the comments about it being 'Dynasty Warriors on crack' is just plain wrong. The game mechanics are nothing like Dynasty Warrior. DW is all about repeatedly beating down a ton of weak easily beat enemies, filling the screen with a few mini and actual bosses throughout it. While this game is going to have a set amount of characters on the screen at once essentially, it's not much different than GoW in that point, and most people seem to think that's amazing. (I do at least).

LegendaryWolfeh
LegendaryWolfeh

Reading your comment farther down, it's obvious you don't think Platinum is a bad developer, you just don't think they should be the ones making the game. Well that's not really fair is it? How do YOU know they won't make a good game, just because it's different than the rest. Sure Kojima isn't going to take a big part, if any at all, in the making. (I'm sure he HAS to have some say in what the game is exactly doing..it's his baby and he's pretty high up in Konami, no?) So, think of it like this. If Kojima is 'letting' it happen, and 'lets' it get released, obviously it can't be a terrible game or anything. There's plenty of people who enjoy the hack genre, DmC, GoW, Bayonetta, Dante's Inferno. It doesn't have to be a miserable thing that the spin-off isn't exactly like the rest of the games. (Sure I included never went, Oh I think this game should be more action oriented, I loved MGS4 just as it was, but that doesn't mean I think other games made for other people can't be created either.)

Jawknee
Jawknee

Look at what they showed at E3 in 2010 and compare it to the new trailer. The game looks terrible now by comparison. Has nothing to do with hating the game just because, has everything to so with what I have already pointed out. The gameplay does not look smooth. It looks choppy as all hell and gimmicky. It was much smoother when it was just Kojima Pro working on it.

Who knows if this is what Kojima wanted. He took a hands off approach from the beginning. And while I liked Vanquish, I hated Bayonetta. Platinum can make a good game but they're not even in the same league as Kojima Pro. Castlevania was a better hack n slash game than Bayonetta.

I personally never played Bayonetta any more than the demo (which supposedly was horribly bad) And I really just don't understand how you say it's choppy. The game is perfectly smooth. You don't see his sword swing, then suddenly doa glitch thing or something and swing again. The action flows perfectly. After watching it again the only thing I'm assuming you're talking about is after each combo attacks when he goes to attack a different person it takes a moment. Well, wouldn't it normally? Realistically at least it Should lag between attacking one person to the other, but that doesn't mean it's choppy. The only thing I found annoying with it was when Raiden talked, his mouth didn't seem to…talk right, haha. But oh well. Either way, everyone likes something different, and everyone can't like everything. Luckily for me I'll get to love MGS4, this game, and MGS5 (if it's made). Though honestly I would throw Rising and MGS5 out the window for a ZoE3 ;D

I'm tellin ya, watch the game play footage from E3 2010. The game play is much smoother and flows a lot better. The sttutering in this is what reminds me of bad hack in slash games like Dynasty Warriors. And there really shouldn't be any lag when connecting hits considering Raiden sliced through GEKO's like butter in MGS4.

Killa Tequilla

Even I noticed as I was watching the trailer that the game is not smooth. So, as of now, the game is not smooth.

I really don't get why people are losing it. As LegendaryWolfeh said..it's not like it's trying to be MGS5 or a MGS game at all for that matter. The trailer looked pretty good it wasn't the greatest but you can see the direction they're taking. Saying it looks terrible is just going overboard..

Jakintosh
Jakintosh

@ Jawknee

While yes, I know what you mean when you say the E3 2010 demo looked much smoother, but Kojima himself has already come out to say that THAT version of the game was terrible. It wasn't fun. There was nowhere to take the concept of being able to cut everything. It was a bad game mechanic wrapped up in a beautiful and well done trailer. Or, as you put it before, "a turd wrapped up in a piece of tinfoil with some earrings on it." That is why that game was cancelled.

And I really don't understand why everyone is freaking out. This game is basically already considered Non-Canon, and is being developed by Platinum games. I have not once heard a bad thing about Bayonetta until today, on these forums. So, Platinum's history paired with the fact that this game is not even part of the Metal Gear Solid brand shouldn't be upsetting anyone. If anything, I think it's cool that there is now a branch of the Metal Gear universe that will appeal to people who don't necessarily enjoy the stealth of the Sold branch, and want more action. Be happy that others may enjoy a game from a series you love, and if you don't want to play it, then don't.

This is a stupid idea. Metal Gear should not even be in the title. Yes the character is interesting but don't make a whole game around him. It will sell, but come one MGS5 is what every single fan wants. Why waste time on this GoW, Ninja Gaiden, Vanquish hybrid. Disappointed and it looked like Kojima was a little nervous when he was announcing that they are ready to show more. It's almost as if he came to the realization that this is a mistake on national TV!!

I would be stoked for the game had they continued on the path they were on. Looking at the 2010 E3 trailer the animations were a lot better, the gameplay looked smoother and the graphics were cleaner. Now it's all choppy and generic looking like Bayonetta. As I said I liked Vanquish and Platinum is not a bad developer but I think Konami a big mistake handing this over to them. As good as Platinum is, Kojima Pro is better all around. At storytelling, programming you name it. Plus I think the reason I liked Vanquish is because it had Mikami's hands all over it. He's not even there anymore.

Why do I have a strange feeling Metal Gear may be removed from the title before this is released. I'm fine with spinoffs and trying something different with the franchise, but when I saw the trailer for this last night I kept wondering if Dante would have a cameo in this somehow. Everything from the combat to the over-the-top nature reeks of DMC and while that's not necessarily a bad thing, it isn't true to Metal Gear. This could turn into a Metroid Other M, but I'll wait and see before I pass judgment.

Let this be a lesson to us all. If you have a game franchise that has a decades-long legacy behind it, NEVER outsource it to anyone.

Jawknee
Jawknee

Well, God of War was outsourced to Ready at Dawn for the PSP titles and those turned out great. Also Sony is having different studios do the Killzone and Uncharted Vita titles and those look promising. Not to mention Nintendo outsourced Metroid to Retro for the Prime series and those are phenomenal.

Outsourcing can work, I think it just depends on the direction the said studio takes the game.

Bah the way I see it its just an action game in the metal gear universe. Nothing wrong with it. And if platinum games is making it… It will probably rock.

I dont think any fans should be angry. Maybe only the xbox crowd XD for only getting an action title and still missing out on mgs4 and maybe 5. Fans of games like Warcraft werent angry with World of warcraft. Same universe, different games. Dont see any kind of trouble.

On a side note: You talked about ZoE3 omg I hope he is working on that! Remember how people used to say ZoE2 was more fitted to ba called a PS2.5 title (since it kicked so much ass)? I hope its going to be the same for the 3rd one! So pretty and awesome it will be discribed as a PS3.5 title! lol

despite not being a MGS game, and slapping the MGS title on it being a massive insult, im really looking forward to this!
i LOVE hack and slash games, we dont get any where near enough of them!
so in that aspect im really happy PG revived this.
look at it this way, if PG were not developing this we would not have it at all!
konami canned it and PG were so interested in it they came and saved the day.
no its not a MGS game, but id rather a descrace to the MGS title, then missing out on what looks like such a cool game!
if it means sullying the name a little, then so be it!

Soooo, by this logic, "Final Fantasy Mystic Quest" should have been called "Final Fantasy V"??

Have people not been paying attention? We've known from the very first day when Rising was revealed that it would be an action-y spin-off which is not helmed by Kojima. This is extremely old news. The only new thing is Platinum Games' involvement, and they're a fantastic developer!

I'm glad that "Solid" has been removed from the title. It's clearly a different type of product, and it always has been. Making it part of the Solid series would just cheapen what has been done there. Should they have called a couple of those PSP games "Metal Gear Solid: Card Battle Action"??

Let this game be its own thing. Sheesh.

It being an action game or a spinoff is not what bothers me personally, it's that they went from this:

dude, you totally dont get it!
fans are so upset because when they first showed rising it actually still felt like a MGS game.
even koji himself said on twitter the other day that when it went to PG they changed it, it had slight MGS tendencies to it but since they got onto it there gone it now has nothing to do with MGS.
thats why fans are so pissed off, simply because they came out and showed this really cool game that still has roots back to MGS, then yanked the mat from under their feet!
