In the end, it came down to longer play sessions versus incomparable sales numbers.
Game-tracking social service website Raptr has released its "most played game" awards today, and Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim just managed to squeak past Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to earn the illustrious top honors.
Basically, Raptr uses a formula by tracking play time data to determine the winners, but bear in mind that they're only counting registered Xbox 360 and PC users. PlayStation 3 and Wii titles weren't included "due to data capturing restrictions," so bear that in mind when examining these results.
In total first-month playtime, MW3 had a 9% edge on Skyrim , but the epic RPG requires a ton of time and caught up; the average playtime per person came to around 23 hours. Players also averaged nearly three hours per session, while MW3 came in at just over two hours. Other winners include L.A. Noire for Most Played New IP, FIFA 12 for Most Played Sports Game, and Batman: Arkham City for Most Played Open-World Game.
But how do you think the results would've changed had they included PS3 and Wii users? What games would've come out on top? Would it have still been MW3 and Skyrim ? …yeah, probably.
Related Game(s): The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
I'm guessing it'd probably be around the same had PS3 been included. But I don't know the sales numbers for those games on those systems.
How does Skyrim win overall, but Arkham City wins for open world game?
It was winning that category, too, but it took an arrow to the…aw f^&*. I haven't even played the game yet, and even i've got caught up in the arrows in knees nonsense.
I've often seen genre awards stolen from GOTY winner, so that other games are given exposure, too, even if they are less deserving of the award.
I will get back to it once it is fixed. Great game but don't want my experience hindered in anyway. Besides, no way could I pull myself away FFXIII. What an outstanding game, hooked. 12 hours in already! In 2 days!
Well, for me it was White Knight Chronicles 2, but I doubt that would be the same for many others lol 😀
That's pretty amazing. I know for me personally I'll put more time into Skyrim than MW3, but, seeing the amount of time some people have on those MW3 leaderboards is just insane. Where do they find the time, seriously? We are talking days compared to hours.
At any rate I'm not surprised at all these two are at the top. Kind of surprised BF3 isn't up there though.
I said this many times, it's one of the few RPG titles I've ever played and boy… I put more hours in this than other big titles like, BF3, MW3, SR3, MGS HD, just to name a few… I might be starting to get into RPGs but then again, games like Final Fantasy aren't my thing. I don't know what it is about Skyrim I enjoy so much even though I put 40 hours in it, doesn't feel like much.
On an off-topic side note, I accidentally clicked "tab" followed by "back" on my tablet. If this was my iTouch it would have deleted the whole post. You have no idea how many times it's happened to me on this very website! So I just click away without bothering to write everything again… Glad my tablet don't do that!
LOL, I can see this being true since a lot of people where bought skyrim.
Im glad to see these numbers, maybe developers will take notice and see that we gamers still want our RPG's.
Is this most played game RELEASED in 2011 or just the most played game of the year 2011?
I only ask because I am surprised COD Black Ops isn't the most played being that it is a COD game and it released last year, which means it would have a whole 10-11 months of play time in the year 2011 ahead of Skyrim or MW3.
It would have to be released in 2011, they don't generally include games that come out the year before, no matter how late.
This can be only be a good news…now I hope they fix the Ps3 version pronto!
Didn't even realize it, but I've spent over 85 hours playing this game on my first play through, and still haven't finished everything. Welp, time to get my second race ready.
This is sick! 😀 The game just came out and it is already the most played of 2011. Just imagine after the christmas rush and gifts. It might just break new records 😀
The most Broken game in 2011 : The Honor goes to Skyrim!
ok…..fixed :p

not exactly surprising when you have to do things 5 times because the last 4 times you did it the game bugged out and you lost your progressâ¦â¦â¦……….
this has got to be the first game that kicks you in the balls, runs away with your money and people say thank you and go back for more!

I'm not playing it until I hear reports of it being fixed. Or maybe I have to get it for PC (did it come out for PC?)
Games like that I have to do everything possible. And there's no way I can do everything possible without hitting that save file bench mark that ruins the experience.
Last thing I want is to get really far, then not be able to finish.
I'm intersted in playing this game but hearing problems about it in a big game like this, I will wait for a while cause I don't like when games stall on me. I'm not a big RPG gamer hence my nickname but that's a different story.
I am loving Skyrim but I don't get to play as much as I would like to. I picked up MW3 on day 1 and ive played about 2 hours. It wasn't as cool as I thought it might be so its getting traded soon.
