Due to a lackluster attempt at a skateboard peripheral and a waning interest in such titles this generation, the blockbuster Tony Hawk series has dwindled in popularity.

The hey-day of a perfect 10 for Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 at GameSpot is long gone, but that doesn't mean the skating legend can't try again, right?

If you check his Twitter feed today, you'll see that Tony Hawk will be on hand at this weekend's Spike TV Video Game Awards to announce something new and as he says in his message, it isn't a coincidence.

"I'll be announcing the upcoming release of something new on Sat; the same day as the Spike Video Game Awards. Coincidence? I think not."

We figure the fans are still out there, and they'll respond if a talented developer can produce another great Tony Hawk installment. EA's Skate franchise has sort of stepped up and taken the skating crown since the debacle that was Tony Hawk: Ride , but Activision has often said the Tony Hawk franchise isn't dead…

Well, since it seems EA has dropped the Skate franchise again (they went totally silent after Skate 3, not a single word) I'd *love* news about a new skate game. It'd be perfect timing from the Hawk camp to reveal a new title now.

So I don't think many of us are looking for the whole "revolutionary technology" thing in this. Not better graphics either.

What do we want?

How about FUN. Because that is the word which describes THPS2,3,4, Underground 1,2, and American Wasteland. That and good soundtrack. Just make a fun game.

Hopefully this time they'll use skate's flick it control system or something else new and innovative that isn't a POS. I'd say stick with a controller but what do I know? Hey, they could come up with something great, they have in the past. I hope RIDE taught them that the Tony Hawk name isn't enough to generate sales any more.

LOL, I remember when critics were referring to annualization as "Tony Hawking" a franchise rather than saying "CODing a franchise".

They will have to come up with something good up their sleeves. Since Skate came out, it was the better game that blew off. Never played Skate 2 or 3 (just demos) but I don't really need to, Skate 1 already proved me. My personal favorite was Tony Hawk Underground.

The thing that most interests me about thus is that Tony Hawk no longer slates (and likewise, John Madden no longer coaches or announces). So how long do you think it'll be before people know Hawk (or Madden) as "that guy who does those skating (or football) video games"?

eh.
i think its pretty obvious how this ones going to turn out!
i wish we could have a reboot, take the series back to the originals roots.
i remember spending 100s of hours in the original, every TH game on ps1 was actually pretty good!
