Okay, it seems the patch PlayStation 3 gamers need is just around the corner.

The US has yet to see it but according to Eurogamer , the much-needed update is available now in some parts of Europe. The 92MB patch brings the game to version 2.01 and apparently fixes some of the severe issues reported by frustrated players.

Bethesda PR boss Pete Hines said the patch will improve performance for "long-term play on PS3." As some of you already know, if the save file gets too large (usually between 6 and 10MB), the game starts to suffer from serious lag and texture problems and eventually becomes a gigantic annoyance. Early feedback for the new patch seems positive, though, so here's hoping the update arrives in North America ASAP.

By the way, if you're wondering, these issues can affect the Xbox 360 version if the game was installed to the hard drive. But that's optional; it isn't optional with the PS3 version, so players have no choice but to deal with the ongoing problems.

Wait Ben, some ppl are still claiming that the patch doesn't fix the problems. 🙁

Ignitus
Ignitus

From the reports I have read, the "fix" consisted of lowering the resolution detail of the textures and the problem comes back after a while, between 1 or 2 hours later than before the patch. It seems that the memory leak has not been adressed yet.

Has anyone here applied the update and confirm about the change in the textue's resolutions?

Beamboom

But textures has nothing to do with savegame files?

Ignitus
Ignitus

Because textures and the game files are loaded into memory. But the save file keeps growing, so one way of making space for it is freeing up memory by using lighter(lower resolution) textures.

I understand the problems arise after the save file goes above 9MB.

Aha! That way. I see. Makes sense. But why on earth do they need to hold the entire savegame file in memory continuously… Are there no swap file on the ps3 system?
Oh well. Thanks. 🙂

Comments claims that the patch lowers resolution. WTF? That's taking away from the experience. No more Bethesda products on launch day ever again. I invested 28 hours and I'm afraid of the patch.

This is good news I guess, but I have also read on the Bethesda forums that this 92mb patch also lowers texture resolution which is a downside. A downside I could I live with if it really is a fix. Lowering overall texture resolution in the PS3 version is a nasty trick we used to see from a lot of multiplat developers back in 2007 by the way.

My main gripe with Bethesda is that they refused to send out the PS3 version for review which implies they had something to hide. Also, this kind of bug or whatever you want to call it should have been detected before the game even shipped.

I will never trust a PS3 review based off of a 360 disc again. In hindsight the fact that 360 version was sent to a PS site should have raised more of a red flag. It would be nice to think both versions of the game are the same but that's just not how it always works out for us PS3 owners. We aren't talking about some hasty last minute port either. Skyrim was a high profile release that was shipped with a pretty nasty longplay bug in the PS3 version, Another thing, I feel sorry for the small portion of PS3 users that are not connected to the internet that are unable to download any patches. They are entitled to a working game as well.

Anyways I just hope the DLC will be in working order becuase to this very day parts of Fallout 3's DLC is just atrocious in the PS3 version. Never was fixed, either. I love Bethasda's games but their game testing and coding abilities for the PS3 are a concern.

To be perfectly frank, this was only expected. Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas all were glitchy and buggy especially on the ps3 (perhaps not to the extent as in Skyrim). This is why I held off on getting any Betheseda ps3 games, despite the review scores, and even Skyrim.

I'm playing my first one, as matter of fact: Fallout 3: GOTY on pc only for 19.99. I'm enjoying the game at 60fps, and full detail, with no game freezes, and no bugs so far. And aside from the nose-picking side missions, I'm enjoying it very much

I returned my ps3 copy for a cash refund cause my walmart didn't have the 360 version. So I bought online and should get it by the 6th. Won't be installing it, be playin off the disc.

I didn't think the patch would come this soon, oh well on my part though. Hope the ps3 users of this game get a perminate fix, by reading some of the above comments, it seems the problem still persists

The problems I'm having are minor and I'd rather not have a resolution lowering patch. That's not a fix, it's more like a cop out.

Bethesda's comment for everyone to calm down while they worked on a patch, now seems like they were being a smart ass.

If Bethesda doesn't give me a real fix, then I don't want it. I want the option to turn down the patch and that's highly unlikely. How they handle this will be the measuring stick for any future purchases for me.

I got somewhat excited when a friend told me they'd patched it. Was looking into ways to D/L it for myself, and then this… Whatever Bethesda. They need to get it right. I'm off buying their products, no matter how well they rate and how much I love them. This affair is finished.

As usual with Bethesda products, I'll be waiting until most issues are cleared up. Only Bethesda game I actually own is Fallout 3. And I only got that this past summer.

Excellent news. I was very disappointed by this because I am really enjoying Skyrim.

Glad to see Bethesda rectify this situation quickly. However, it doesn't excuse the fact that the PS3 version was shipped with this bug.

weds is when the patch hits supposedly for ps3,pc and 360 according to their forums

i just hope the patch doesn't make skyrim worst cause it took 3 patches just to get nv right even though the game still runs bad.

All I can say is I'm glad I havnt experienced any of these issues and I'm at around 8mb. It sucks that these issues are there, but I think some people are over reacting. If it's some how worse for some people than others then I guess that's a logical excuse, but since I havnt experienced anything detrimental then I can't help but see it that way.

Anyways, it's certainly not something anyone should pass up on the game for. Bethesda makes great games, I just think they have a problem with quality assurance. I'll admit that. But I've loved every one of their games and they have provided me with more playing time than any other games have. That's a plus in my book.

They do however need to resolve this, it's obviously an issue with the amount of complaints there are out there. If they don't, that would be more frustrating to see happen then them shipping it like this.

I'm gonna wait for the patched GOTY like all of their games but when the GOTY is released a bunch of new and better games are going to be out there…sorry Bethesda.

Every one likes different games, you might think it's garbage but to others it is not.

I'm disappointed I even bought MW3, should of went with Skyrim instead. Would of been a better investment for me.

It's hard to find expansive games like Skyrim anymore these days. The gaming industry is beginning to run off of mainstream games like MW3 a little too much, so a relief from those re-runs are games like the Elder Scrolls. It's hardly fair to call Skyrim "reskinned", because it really isn't. In more ways than one, it's different, but doesn't stray too far from the tried-and-true Elder Scrolls formula. Sure, there might not be any online gameplay – oh, God forbid! Blasphemy! – but what it lacks in that department, it makes up for in NPC interaction and narrative quests. Unlike in Oblivion and Morrowind, Skyrim easily immerses you into the characters you find in towns, and they actually feel like living, thriving places instead of being a bunch of polygons and textures meant to look like a town.

However, I can't really say the same for MW3. The engine's the same, the animations are the same, the guns, equipment, perks… All the same. It's like a bad re-run that everyone continues to participate in just for its value in easy entertainment and gaming mixed with social interactivity flawlessly. I also believe that the sheep you're referring to are not followers of the Elder Scrolls, but rather the Call of Duty franchise. Do you know how many people I've come across that buy those devils every single year "just because my friends are getting it"? Working at GameStop at the midnight release of MW3, I heard enough of those opinions to fill a very large room. Yeah, talk about sheep.

What I'm basically trying to point out here, is that Skyrim is a once-in-a-while masterpiece that breaks away from mainstream online interactions, and focuses on more what an RPG is about, and goes back to those isolationist days of gaming. In retrospect, I'm glad I'm spending these past 60 hours on a game with such adversity, rather than an old, dying dog that knows the same tricks, never any new.

Indeed, already done. I stumbled upon the thread when I was on the forums a few days ago looking to see what's new, at the time my WKC2 disc was broken.

(Too much pressure on the disc putting it back, put a thick but small crack into the disc rendering it useless then many days of boredom. But now I have it back and having a blast! Also can't wait to get Skyrim for christmas, gosh i feel like a broken record saying that all the time about Skyrim.. haha)

I think the texture quality can be over looked when you have that much content. No lag is good enough for me.

I've been playing for an hour or so after the patch and the issues I had before (choppyness, dragon skeles still hanging around) are gone. So far… textures look the same to me, but ..I guess I'll have to get back on there and take a second look. Even if that's the case, I didn't notice it at all.

After downloading the patch, I haven't had any lag. It's definitely noticeable how much the lag has cut down from this patch. And the whole textures missing thing? If they are, it certainly isn't very noticeable to me.

Well if it can re-assure you all. I have the game on 360 because of the one month DLC thing. It crashed quite a few times in my 50hrs game (around 10 times) Thats without counting the number of times my horse would dissappear while I am riding it or a structure would *not load* but everything inside did and it was raining NPCs lolll

I have the new model too. So yeah both versions have their share of crap. Game is so fun though I can't stop playing 😀

Hoping it comes on the Vita for real.

The patch has been working out just great for me. If it's true about the textures, I certainly haven't noticed their decline in detail. Everything still looks great and runs way smoother. I haven't had any terrible lag yet, like it would before the patch right from the get-go. I picked up the strategy guide today, and it seems like it was just in time. I can finally play more without being plagued of the lag. Not that it bothered my experience much, anyhow 😉

Clamedeus

A friend of mine says it did lower the textures but it's so small that it's not very noticeable, unless you are one of those people who always have to find something wrong in the game then you will probably see it, but most probably won't even notice.

I only noticed the low textures when I walked right up to an object. But from any distance it's hardly noticeable.

Why must Bethesda's game always have to be so buggy?

CrusaderForever
CrusaderForever

I think it's due to the nature of their games. These aren't small games. They are so vast with so many things to do. Tying it all together looks to be very difficult. This game has been in development since 2006. It must be very difficult to find all the bugs no matter how obvious we think they are. On the flip side if Bethesda knew about all the PS3 bugs before release and just released it anyway that is not good. Hopefully this whole fiasco will be patched and we can get back to enjoying a truly epic game.
