Ready for the next generation of consoles? Well, it isn't here yet, but it's inevitable.

According to Ubisoft Montreal speaking to Edge , major developers (including Ubisoft and EA) are currently making games for the Xbox 360's successor, with an anticipated late-2012 launch date for the new machine.

Right now, it seems the teams in question are working on games with Microsoft-provided "target boxes" that use various computer parts that match the specs for the new console. The first official development kits are expected to go out by the end of this year. Furthermore, in regards to the PlayStation brand, Edge's report says that "one major Sony-owned studio has now ceased PlayStation 3 development" to work on software for the next console.

Recently, we had heard that some internal Sony studios had already started work on games for the PS4; this new piece of evidence appears to corroborate that rumor. And if all of this is accurate, you can expect 2012 to be a year where we start heavily talking about the next generation.

Get ready.

Hmmmm… As for the studio ceasing PS3 development, something makes me think it's either Polyphony Digital or Naughty Dog. Or at least I hope so!

yeah that sounds about right, Uncharted 4 or GT6 for PS4 launch titles

I'd assume both but if it's just one it's definitely ND. Sony want a flagship to go with their ps4 launch, and uncharted has a much wider appeal than Gran Turismo.

Does DLC count as still supporting PS3 software development? …cause PD still has plans to support GT5 with DLC at least.

I guess it's Naughty Dog but they must be working around the clock to get the PS4 new engine and development tools up and running for the rest of SONY studios. Just like on PS3.

I wish I knew what was in that "target box".

The only thing I've read about it so far says that it'll have a hex-core (aka six-core) CPU alongside an AMD graphics card and 2GB of DDR3 RAM. But it's still way too early to know for sure.

Why is there always so little RAM? My 1,5 year old laptop has twice that much! Just like the PS3 only has 256MB RAM (and 256 MB VRAM for a 512 MB total). Isn't that way to little?

daus26
daus26

My first gen, IBM laptop has 2GB ram. Yes IBM, not even Lenovo yet. I'd have to agree that 2GB ram is a bit outdated, but then again, not very many consumer computers out there have more than 4 cores on their processors. Perhaps, that's where the power will be made up?

It makes sense because when I look at a demanding game like GT5 or UC3, with only 512MB (256 VRAM), it can execute all that it did. No PC can do that I don't think? Is it thanks to the PS3's cell? It has like 7,8 cores? Sorry, I'm not a tech guy. I just go by what makes sense to me lol.

firesoul453

Why would they put more ram in it?

2 Gigs should be plenty for any game, ( I know of none that use 1 gig now)

lower ram keeps the cost down

higher bit (256 bit or 512 bit vs a 64 bit pc) basically (sorta in a way) faster transfer rate (so It all doesn't need to be loaded at once)

Plus these aren't Windows PC that have 30 plus background activities running that eat up a few megs a piece.

the amount of ram doesn't have much at all to do with the processor….

Microsoft knows that it has to sprint to the 720 to have any chance against the powerhouse that is Sony. The dev kits aren't even available and they are using PC parts to match what the 720 will do! I smell fear and Sony can too. PS4 should still wait until Holiday 2013 and prove to the world that it doesn't care if Microsoft gets out of the gates first. PS3 has a lot of gas left in the tank.

I don't think PS4 will wait another year after Xbox. PS2 was the universal popular gaming machine, so PS3 can afford to be a year late and gain it's ground later.

PS3 lost most of it's market since PS2, so they do not have the luxury to wait again.

SoulController

@godsman
Everyone needs to stop forgetting that the reason that Sony lost so much ground was because of the high price point. That and the fact that there wasnt much software to speak of.

The Dreamcast came out a year before PS2 and that was a "headstart" alright. A headstart straight to the grave.

Microsoft has hardly any first party studios capable of producing the quality of Sony's IP's. At this point I see M$ having no choice but to jump the gun again. Sony just has to make sure when its there time again, to give a decent price and good launch library

Well, they used ~5000 PowerMac G5's as the first Xbox 360 dev units, and I believe just some standard PCs as the original Xbox dev units, so kludging together something to develop with is sorta MS's standard process.

well, we all knew microsoft is going to prematurely end this console war while its on top. since the difference is below 2mil a while back, they're going to have to release a new console soon. get ready for a new set of red rings….. or whatever the hell they use.

@Soul. Price was not the main issue with the PS3. Sony arrogance since it dominated the last gen had more to do with the PS3 laugh problems. Xbox was just as expensive when you included the add-ons to put the system on par with a PS3. Folks were paying for those accessories before Sony launched. People complained about the price, but for a few months after launch, it was a pain calling to see if any retailers had 60 gig PS3s.

As for Sega, the industry looked nothing like it does now. Sony's entry into the video game market was the catalyst for all that we have now. Sega made a series of hardware blunders that sealed their own fate. Had they had MS $45 billion in cash on-hand, they would still be in the game.

Sony cannot give MS another year headstart this next go-round. MS has the money and muscle to make Sony pay for coming to the party late.

The sad part is that Sony lost money on every PS3 sold.

LetoAtreides82

I completely agree with those that say Sony should release the PS4 within a year after the Xbox 720.

The Xbox 360 proved to be a very strong contender (and still is) and that's why it won't be until early 2012 that the PS3 will finally pass the 360 in total sold units.

Unless Sony wants to deal with that mess all over again it should release the PS4 very soon after the 720.

Also Sony doesn't have to stop supporting the PS3, it can easily downgrade PS4 games to be playable on the PS3. Microsoft would be smart to do the same thing but they didn't do that for the original Xbox so we'll see.

I wonder what will happen when the next consoles come out, will devs stop development for 360 & Ps3?

Maybe PS4 & 720 are backwards compatible but what about Ps3 & 360?

johnld

dont care about that, as long as psn still works on ps3 when ps4 comes out i'll be happy. i'll still be playing games like battlefield and uncharted if i decide not to buy a new system by then. sad though, i was planning to get a new ps3 during the holidays or my birthday but with this news, i might just hold of and get a ps4 instead. i wanted to retire my 60gb ps3 but i guess its working overtime.

AcHiLLiA

Killa don't u own a PS3? 3 PS3 versions support PS2/PS1 backwards compatible . All the rest of the versions only support PS1 BC.
It will be smart for Sony's PS4 to be backwards compatible considering the fact the PS3 has so many good titles.

Crazy. I was really hoping to see a PS3 Jak & Daxter done by Naughty Dog.. at least once. I thought the Jak HD trilogy sort of eluded to something there with that.. but maybe not. That's not to say it is absolutely ND, but I'd imagine Sony would be very desiring of such a move. I suppose it could be Evolution Studios with a new Motorstorm game. The first one seemed to be real well received. There's always Santa Monica, but I absolutely expect GoW4 to be PS3. THen there's PD. I sort of doubt it though. I'd imagine PD would want more pay out for all of those years designing a custom PS3 engine for GT5. But considering how laborious it is to create a GT simulator with tons of cars, maybe they have to get an early start, where GT6 for PS3 would have to be handled by some B-Team, or something. I dunno.Lots o' speculating

johnld

well, since naughty dog is pretty much one franchise per generation, a new jak game might be a ps3 launch game. thats not a bad thing right.

Temjin001

Still more thoughts. I'm all for new consoles, I'm always that way, but there are some must happens on PS3 before PS4.
First, I want another GoW. GoW3 was great, but I know they could do even better on the second go around. ANd PS2 had 2 GoW's, where the first one launched like year 4 or 5 of it's life cycle. It's too early to migrate.

Second, there needs to be a full-on MGS sequel. Not some off shoot Raiden game, but the real deal.

Oh, and like I posted above, Jak and Daxter. That was one of Sony's best early PS2 games. In fact, I thought it was Sony's best platformer up to that point. The series was successful with great sequels.

And no full on WIpEout game? Like, made from the ground up on PS3 with cockpits and all? I like WipeOut HD, but it was largely the PSP games with a new coat of paint. Where's the true "next-gen" experience?

Anyway, maybe PS4 I suspect is still well over a year, maybe two years away. There's still time.

I want following games to PS3 swan songs in terms of exclusives, Jak & Dexter By Naughty dog, so i want Uncharted 4 on PS4. A new IP by Guerrilla Games, KillZone 4 on PS4. Heavenly Sword 2 from Santa Monica, and GOW4 on PS4. And the two title I Really want to see is Eight Days and Getaway 3.. and i m sure i m forgetting some more games

Prepare to replace your xboxes again!

The Xbox has been holding PS3 back this whole generation of multiplats so I don't mind if the PS3 holds the new Xbox back for a year. Since MS has lost most of their exclusives I don't think they would have a huge lineup to shock the world with at launch anyway. More Halo, maybe Gears, more Forza, another Fable…

I don't want Sony to push anything if they don't have to. Maybe I'm getting old but this gen just seems too brief.

Shams
Shams

Unfortunately, MS doesn't even need an exclusive to start shipping out their next line of boxes. All they need is COD, and a headstart, to win the masses. I hope Sony keeps that in mind, because they can neutralize it by releasing at the same time and marketing COD as well.

Actually, I feel rather sad about that news. The end of the PS3 seems to rushed for me. I am only settling down with the console now. What a shame. I was hoping we wouldn't see a PS4 until 2014…

What do I do now? I have 2 PS3's, and to have to purchase a PS4 will be crazy. There is only so much space underneath my TV set 🙁

If the PS4 has no games for launch, then it'll probably rely on its other assets, e.g. multimedia features. I doubt that will do much though lol.

Unlike the PS3, I highly doubt the PS4 will be a D1P for either. I could easily enjoy my PS3's for another good few years. If anything I will get some of the latest PC multi-platform releases for my laptop next year.

I will look at getting a PS4 around 2014/2015. Again though it really depends on how tempting PS4 hardware is…

I really don't want this to happen. I mean there is just so much for the ps3 and xbox 360 left. I meant in games wise nothing developing or hardware wise since the xbox 360 is over and ps3 is done as well. The games are just so awesome. I mean the games what came out this year alone are to last the next 5 years for any gamer for sure.

I don't think it's been long enough. There shouldn't be any new consoles until there's a serious leap in technology that makes them a necessity.

I mean…if there are new consoles and the gameplay isn't fundamentally different, I don't think I'll be getting one. I still need to round out my GBA collection after all!

LetoAtreides82
LetoAtreides82

There's already been a leap in technology, years ago. Even today's best games on the PS3 and the 360 are noticeably not as good as what a top end PC can do.

Why settle for 30fps with some frame drops and some screen tearing when you can have silky smooth 60fps and no screen tearing?

I don't like this news. MS is rushing the next gen. They're probably going to release another crappy console that holds back the PS4. All so they can say they were first. In the end gamers get the shaft.
