Metal Gear Solid 5 On The Horizon?

Hideo Kojima might tell us "the truth" about Metal Gear Solid: Rising at the Spike TV Video Game Awards on December 10.

But what about a true-blue Metal Gear Solid 5 ? Fans have been waiting on that announcement every since MGS4 launched, and now it appears that we have a promising hint…

OPM UK has teased an upcoming "significant issue," and they've given us a "stealthy hint" of what to expect come November 29: as seen at Game Kudos , that hint is just an exclamation mark. But long-time MGS fans know it well…it looks a lot like the exclamation point that appears over an alerted guard's head. Could it be that MGS5 is on the way?

We've already seen Peace Walker for the PSP, which Kojima said in his mind really was "Metal Gear Solid 5." But the fans really want to see the franchise return to the PlayStation 3 for one more entry before the PS4 arrives. Maybe the announcement isn't far off…

METAL GEAR SOLID is over! I love the series, but seriously, they're already pushing to the edge of unnecessary with RISING.

They have gone through the whole timeline now and nothing and be after MGS4 which concluded the series so I just do not want a MGS5…

Your response to this great news was completely predictable.

Besides, who are you to say it's over? You don't work for Kojima Pro and you're not Hideo Kojima. If he has ideas on how he can further the story, who are you to tell him otherwise?

Well, it was suppose to be over after MGS2, then 3, then 4.. Let's face it it's not going to end anytime soon if they're able to come up with an answer to the previous game's questions. 😛

@Vampdeleon

I don't recall that..MGS2 was so left open that it couldn't possibly be the end. Kojima wouldn't end it after a prequel either..4 is the end..

Kojima himself did say later on in an interview a few years ago that he had meant to end it (not just directing) at MGS2, then 3, but due to popular demand since it left unanswered questions that people wanted answers to eventually led up to 4 being a major wrap-up to everything.

Kojima had no plans of doing any MGS game beyond the original Metal Gear Solid for the PS1, i personally think its all a marketing strategy to build up demand.

@Ultimadream.
MGS5 won't necessarily be a sequel to MGS4, it will more than likely be a PW sequel.

Honestly there are still wholes, though I understand a lot of you would not like to be disappointed, I think they can still make a good game for what's left in the series. I personally don't think it should be called Metal Gear Solid 5, or rising for that matter because it definitely seems like they'll try and milk the series for the rest of what it is. I do Raiden(before the high heel ninja bit, though he was kinda cool), and it'd be great to figure out his story between MGS2 and MGS4. I can reply MGS all the way to MGS4 and still cry, or wish for more at the end of the series. If they can make them game, without adding too much of stuff that's unnecessary, then this would be a great either side addition, or ending addition to the series.

A little off topic:

I haven't played the psp titles but to me something is missing for the HD collection, which is Portable Ops, on wiki is says PO is a sequel to MGS3. Anybody know why they will not have Portable Ops in the collection but instead they throw in MGS2?

PO was originaly classed as a sequel, but it really screwed up the timeline for Grey Fox. PO just was not a good game, each area had A to B objectives, the story was very weak, with a hideous new cast. I own it, but have no reason to go back to it now.

Saying that I played through 10 hours of Peace Walker too but found that nearly as bad. The story is far more politically focused this time unlike MGS1,2,3 or 4 which has poltical elements but also heavily character driven.

Why is Metal Gear Solid 2 in this pack, simple, because it is a fantastic game. IMO it has the best gameplay of the whole series MGS3 compicated it with all the START menu hassle & camo index. Plus it is now in Widescreen along with MGS3, which have been the only games to bother me when streched in 16:9, that is worth the pruchase alone.

A new cast, doesn't Portable Ops Plus provide that than Portable Ops, as which I read?

Portable Ops was by far the worst game in the series. Terrible controls and boring game play.

@Ultima

I would rate MGS3 way over MGS2. MGS2 was just not that good imo. The story, characters, and setting were dull. Pulling a bait and switch with one of the most popular gaming icons in gaming history was a terrible idea. MGS fans wanted to play as Snake…not that sissy boy Raiden.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but I think most MGS fans would agree MGS3 is just a superior game in almost every respect. MGS2 is my least favorite MGS game. I have only played the main MGS games on the consoles up until now. I just got the MGS HD collection and I am very impressed with Peacewalker. I love the rpg aspects they have blended in. The Motherbase is a cool idea as well.

The game that is really missing in this collection is MGS1. Why couldn't they use the assets from MGS Twin Snakes to bring a MGS1 remake to the PS3? That was a Gamecube remake of MGS1 that was essentially brought up to PS2 standards. I would not like to see a direct port of that game becuase some of the changes they made kind of broke the gameplay, but it would give them a better place to start from in terms of graphical assets.

What is important about MGS2 is that it is the title that sets the questions for the series. The ending was such bombshell, possibly one of the best cliffhangers in gaming history. The framerate of MGS2 was so smooth and the controls I thought were so much better than in MGS4 when they went for the typical over the shoulder aiming system. Everyones complaint with Radien was over the top IMO. I was actually annoyed to see him as this stereotpyical badass in 4. What I love about MGS2 is the story. The mystery behind the patriots and their censorship. I just felt more connected to the themes than MGS3.

As for MGS3's gameplay, it was just to fiddly, constantly going inot the start menu and changing the camo was a pain in the ass, plus it rarely worked anyway. The worst feature of MGS3 was the alert system. In MGS2 you got the change to eliminate the gaurd before he calls for back up. in MGS3 a guard see's you instant alert. That single handedly ruined the game for me. As for cast, I liked the characters. I have minnor complaints about the story as I really enjoyed it.

Peacwalker I just couldnt get into, the story was plain (from the 10 hours i got through). I hated the whole recruitment system its not what I play MG for. But worst of all was the bosses, from what I played they were all over futuristic robots. It made no sense. No doubnt I'll try it again when the UK finaly get this colletion. But I am really looking forward to MGS2 the most.

I believe they included MGS2 since it is one of the central plots in the series. It included Solid Snake and entered new character Raiden, and other new characters and it's plot helped lead the build up to the events in MGS4 and its own set of characters. However, it is odd how they didn't include the original MGS in the pack..

Personally, I think the collection itself was suppose to only include all the PS2 games like all the other HD game collections out there, but for an added bonus included Peace Walker since it was a newer PSP title and maybe it was to help boost awareness of it since maybe not everyone will get a chance to play Peace Walker before Vita comes out.

@Excelsior.
I really didn't like MGS2 much either, it took the story of the MGS series to a place it didn't need to go. And most of the new characters (excluding solidus) where boring as hell imo. For me it wasn't a worthy sequel to MGS1.

Having to play as raiden was just the icing on a already sour cake.

They could always do another Metal Gear series just with a different title at the end of 'Metal Gear' and it take place in a sort of alternate universe. Like how they had Metal Gear Acid for the PSP which had Snake, but not the same Snake as in Metal Gear and MGS series.

I'd like MGS5 to be a sequel to PW and for it to be done. There is room for one more MGS game, and it's for a final game with BB. If Snake returns after he rode off into the sunset in MGS4, I will start a riot.

If this is true I hope its for Big Boss. Solid Snake's story is done. I hope down the line at some point though Kojima moves on for a while. I want a new IP but the problem is he takes so long to make a friggin' game. Then again you cant rush greatness

Metal Gear Solid Rising has so much story potential. That one should be our MGS5. It won't because last I heard there was less focus on the story and obviously less true stealth gameplay. Not to mention the multi plat factor.

I was very curious as to what happened between MGS2 and MGS4 with Riadon. There a lot of room in there. I know not everyone likes Riadon, but I think he's just fine and makes for an awesome addition to the grand story.

Kojima could also answer a lot of questions by making Grey Fox prequel. Franke Jeager was sort of the original Raidon. Old snake may be at a conclusive end but there's plenty of room for a MGS5.

You clearly were just terrible at MGS3. The camo index which seems to be as difficult as calculus to you is very simple to use. I RARELY get seen when I'm camouflaged. You were either not using it correctly or simply just could not grasp the concept. And the instant alerts? Yeah, they go into alert phase because, you know, in real life you wouldn't dilly dally with a radio when the enemy is three feet in front of you. Besides, they still had to use the radio to send in reinforcements so it wasn't total chaos right when you're seen. Get back to me when you've played the game correctly.

I still have my Metal Gear Solid t-shirt with an exclamation mark on the back from the psone days. Only a handful of people ever asked me what it meant.

I'm definitely on board for another Metal Gear Solid game. Kojima can weave the story how he sees fit, it's the gameplay that has me hooked.

They can still make an MGS5. It's not completely out of the picture. They don't need to include Solid Snake, but they should include something to do with him. The legacy of Solid Snake's ideals live on through another person, and voila, you can have Solid in the title.

As would I. I wouldn't be averse to that idea. MGS5 or remakes of the original are ok in my book, but I'm just putting it out there that it is in fact possible if they wanted to make an MGS5.

Lairfan

I don't care what anyone says, to me, MGS5 would feel completely unneccessary. You don't make the perfect ending to an entire series like MGS4 was and then say, "Oh yeah, let's make another sequel." What the hell would you base it on? There's nothing left to tell in this world.

And no, a prequel couldn't work either. We've had three (if you count MGS3), and Rising is a prequel of sorts itself, and that's more than enough. They pretty much tell the whole story of Big Boss (and Raiden in Rising), and IMO there's no potential for another prequel again.

I know its probably hard for Kojima to leave this series behind because he's worked on it for so long, and I know fans would hate it that its over, but could we please just let the series rest in peace? It seems like nowadays every series has to keep going no matter what. Can't we just call it quits and say it was an excellent run and move on already?

EDIT:
In no way am I saying that the game wouldn't be fun or that it wouldn't be high quality. I'm just saying that MGS5's story would, to me, feel completely unneccessary.

You have to keep in mind that they don't have to continue the same story but they can keep it in the same world after the events of MGS4. Maybe they should change the title to shift the focus, but I can still clearly see another MGS game, especially if Solid Snake leaves behind some sort of legacy/ideals (see above post). Some recurring characters could be there, but overall you are right, the story of Snake and Big Boss is pretty much finished, so they wouldn't take the role of the protagonist.

after the ending of MGS4 a sequel to that would just be insulting!
id be like giving fans GOW4 picking up where 3 ended.
just makes no sense!
a prequel maybe, find where it could fit in the storyline.
but not a sequel following MGS4.

also, i seriously doubt will be seeing MGS5 any time soon.
1 he was complaining 50GBs was not enough space to do MGS4, so how the hells he going to put 5 on there?
2nd hes working on so many games, a new ZOE, that taboo title, then co producing on rising.
this aint R*!
you cant announce 10 games, then announce another 10 before you release one of them!
thats exactly why i get annoyed with him, all he does is talk!
as the saying talk is cheap!

he loves waving the carrot in front of the rabbits face.
