The launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has sent millions flocking to enjoy the benefits of online play.
And in order to make the most of your experience, you really need to sign up for Activision's new subscription service, Call of Duty Elite. Those who purchased the Hardened Edition of MW3 got a year's membership free, and many others are signing up.
The result? According to Beachhead Studio boss Chacko Sonny, registration requests are absolutely through the roof :
"We are proud to say that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has launched and millions of people are already playing online. Registration requests for our new live service Call of Duty Elite are exceeding even our most optimistic expectations, which is creating a bottleneck and some players have not been able to register. We have already registered hundreds of thousands of players and we are working around the clock to increase our capacity as quickly as possible.”
Sonny added that your gameplay data is safe, and the team is "working around the clock to accommodate every player who wants to be part of Call of Duty Elite." Remember, at its core, this is a free service; you only have to pay the $50 premium if you wish to have all the fringe benefits. For those who love MW3 and the Call of Duty brand, it's definitely something worth looking into.

You know, it's kind of liberating to know that I am absolutely not among this group. I have no desire at all to play the game, or purchase it, or give Activision money at all for it.
What makes me laugh is that all through my life with video games, computer games, role playing games (the paper and dice kind), being an avid reader, liking science fiction, etc… I have always been seen as an outsider by the mainstream. Then gaming went all big business and suddenly I was part of that mainstream. It feels so good to once again be out of that mainstream and back in my comfortable niche.
Ah yes, once more the geek, once more than loner who likes something different. Yes! Back to normal.

With you Highlander. I've always been rebellious, to anything mainstream, which is why I've been a gamer all my life.
I wont say once more because I've always considered myself a geek, I am a loner, I am weird but thats just me being normal.
@TheHighLander
I'm laughing at these sheep who are just handing over their money to Activision without question. These morons are the ones who are giving Activision free reign to raise prices for the next instalment of their game. Everybody is falling all over themselves paying $50 to be registered as "Elite", as if it makes them a badass all of a sudden. Just pathetic.
Oh well. It will make the "Why was my Xbox account suspended" message board even more lively when these farts complain about being perma-banned for having a modded avatar. Already, I've seen some banned with Elite status on their Gamerscore box.
I think what's truly pathetic here is how much you care. And how much of an effort you're putting in, in order for other people to see just how much you care.
Go outside, make some friends, get a girlfriend, etc. just so it can keep your mind off of MW 3 you crybaby.
I went outside once, sh*t was scary.

Oh, Nas.
I guess my 33 years of video gaming makes me unqualified to give takes on Activision. Already having buyer's remorse on the $500 you threw down for Modern Warfare 3?
I also am not included in money totals this game has produced. Once the series stopped focusing on the single player portion back around CoD3 or so, and started focusing on the multiplayer side, I pretty much left the series. After playing the first Modern Warfare, I haven't touched the series since.
I agree with Geobaldi – this franchise has tried very hard to KILL single player campaigns, and the fact that "millions" are already online playing multiplayer just goes to show you that they never even touched the SP campaign before jumping into MP. All this does is give the industry "proof" that "gamers" don't care about SP, so they are going to continue to focus on MP….which isn't good for anyone.
It's a sad thing. I bough MW1 and 2, and played the MP…..but when it kept being the same game every year I learned my lesson, and I no longer give money to a CoD game. "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me"…..never gonna fool me again though. There are too many amazing games out the to continue to talk about CoD every year.
And I think we can drop them from GOTY discussions from now on. Sales does to equal greatness….but I think most of us saw what greatness truly was on 11-1-11.
@SvenMD, totally agree with every word u've said
perhaps he could have worded it nicer, but i still think nas has a point. if one hates the series so much, skip the article.
Then again, highlander also has a point as well
Gaming snobs.
i appreciate that you guys like single player campaigns. I do too. But i also really love call of duty MP. Lots of people love it. I just don't get where you guys come off with this self righteousness that you are a "better" gamer because you don't play call of duty. Its not your cup of tea, that's fine by me, but keep your snootiness about the subject to yourselves
I like how those that don't play cod, moan about the game incessantly.
Even if had got a 10, you'd still get the same old cliches rolled out ad infinitum.
@DigitalStorm (if that is your real name…)
Gaming Snobs? Who's throwing names around my friend? Where did I moan about the game? Me thinks you do protest too much.
@Nas
High's married with a kid, full time job, and a house. He's doing fine with the getting out.
@DigitalStorm
You're one of the biggest snobs here. Not sure why you're name calling… In case you didn't notice, you -ALSO- just made a "I'm so glad I'm not like them" statement. "Man I'm glad I'm not a snob like you", says DigitalStorm.
Hypocrisy.
But then again, I'm no better. Because boy am I ever glad I'm not like you, either. Let's just be snobs together. I'll take pride in being the one that's at least honest about my snobbery.

Only throw around comments like everyone else here!
Didn't mean it personally to you – just have to reply to op to get it on the trail.
For the record, a little snobbery is a good thing so long as it doesn't inflate ego. It's an informal quality assurance policy, if you will.
😉
@WorldEndsWithMe
probably saw nas's face
Funny how much attention this "Elite" subscription plan has gotten, maybe it's the $50 price tag, or maybe I'm missing something but isn't battleblog the same thing? And free…
I understand this gets you beta access in the next three call of duty titles to come out next year 😛
but $50 bucks to access beta, and tell your friends you unlocked a ribbon doesn't seem worth it.
but ahh who am i to talk i'm not the one who spent over $1,700 on the game in the first place.
I apologize I forgot the 10+ $15 dlc you get for free.
Pre-Ordered BF3 for day one purchase. After back and forth emails to EA, I still can't log into Battlelog. They keep saying they are 'working' on the issue, but haven't found a resolution as of yet. Both ELITE and Battlelog are a joke, at least with ELITE you get free DLC….that is if you can actually register your founder code….and that remains iffy at best.
^ that's a pain, sorry to hear it. Though you're not missing out on much, it's literally like facebook for bf3… But I do enjoy trying to out compete my friends achievements 😉
How could it exceed expectations? If it's free you just expect everyone who buys the game to sign up right? So maybe 12 million in the first week. Dumbasses.

I think most people who got the Elite purchased the hardened edition. Hey if mw3 is the only game you really play the most why not? Also the hardened edition was $40 more and you figure there will be at least 3 map packs most likely 4. So people will save money. The casual gamer loves CoD that's why it sells so well.
and thats a shock how?
seriously, COD is now the best selling franchise in ps3 history for crying out loud!
so its kinda expected.
problem though they have had to halt subscriptions for a while because the servers buckled.
how can you not expect this amount of subscriptions though, i mean seriously!
have they forgotten that MW2 became the best selling game of all time!?
then lost that title to BO!?
i mean come on, this is hardly surprising!
They can say it exceded expectations all they want, but Pre-Orders alone should have been a forecast for what was to come. The BETA of ELITE was utter crap, so I'm not really surprised that they are in CYA mode…they need to put out 'something' because right now, I can pretty much gurantee these idiots that ELITE membership, after one year will drop off by about 85%.
Elite is free, you only have to pay for additional stats and dlc. You get an 'entry-level' pass for free.
As for all this 'It's good to be different' etc.
Low self-esteem?
Different = good.
Being the same = Boring.
Wrong on so many levels.
One striking one for you…
…Saddam/Adolf/Gaddafi.
Different = bad.
Godwin!
Oh, and you're a complete ass by the way, your posts in this thread leave no room for doubt on that.
I love how DigitalStorm points out you saying "Boy I'm glad I'm not like you" then follows it up with "Boy I'm glad I'm not like you".
He's the snobbiest one of all of us snobs.
I didn't even think Highlander's post was offensive at all. All he said was that he didn't enjoy the game. And he has a point… buying this elite thing is silly unless you play the game almost exclusively. It's as silly as any other subscription fee. I have friends… close personal friends… who have purchased Elite or the Hardened edition. Not once did I feel like Highlander thinks I have bad friends.
Correct me if I'm wrong… but aren't many of the people who bought Elite, likely the same people who, on this site, have complained about paying for MMO's like DC Universe, Plus, and XBOX Live? And if not complained, didn't it used to be a reason for people NOT to buy a game?
Perhaps the word "Sheeple" is too strong, Highlander, but at least you make a relevant point. Aside from that, I'm not sure claiming to be strange and different (or abnormal) is any insult to anyone else.
Elite is a decent idea if CoD is essentially your exclusive game of choice. I personally will never get Elite because I play too many other things besides CoD for it to be worthwhile.
Wonder what names DigitalStorm will come up with for me for saying that….

I didnt say that – you did.
I didn't class myself in any bracket. I just happen to like cod. Simple.
Find it amusing there's comments here to the effect of…
…'I'm glad I dont play this game'.
I had too. Been going on far too long without a mention.
Comments – it's only about games, it's banter -not life or death. Chill.
You dont have to pay for Elite.
(As I've mentioned before.)
I haven't been able to declare Godwin on anyone in ages, that was fun.
This is not a good thing for the industry, If this 'premium' package suceeds more companies are going to jump on the band wagon. Just like many have already with online gaming in a title which doesnt need it or penalism to people who buy pre-owned games or DLC, companies have done nothing but exploit gamers this gen and I'm sick of it.
Last edited by Vivi_Gamer on 11/10/2011 5:19:36 AM
handed over my $50 for the elete premium – zero and i mean ZERO interest in all the facebook/ social integration crap – purely for the DLC – as I buy all the map packs – this will save me money over all and save me the hassle of going onto the psn store to look for it.
I see Uncharted3 have a similar deal to prebuy a bundle of the DLC.
I'm not knocking Elite..but I fail to understand what about it exactly is worth $50. Sure if you buy all the Map Packs it'll save you a little cash. But for $50 what else exactly do you get that makes it worth so much?
It show's your loyalty to activision… duh 😛
But seriously I guess for the $50 you get 20 pieces of dlc a year before other non premium members can access the content. what "pieces" means who knows, but I assume they used the word pieces so gun's and accessories can count…
You also get to watch some web series "noob tube"…

Thanks for the info…doesn't really sound like it's worth the cash though. Then again, if I was a hardcore CoD player then it could be justifiable..
Wow. so people are actually doing it. When did burning money for nothing become the thing to do?
At this point modern warfare 3 and battlefield 3 talk, speculation and advertisements have alienated me to the point where I won't buy either.
k, thanks for that.
Why is this such a personal issue for you, DigitalStorm? I don't get it.
It's not a personal issue – just sticking up for the underdog. (on this site…)
(Is it not a bit usual to post in a thread bout fps the fact you're not going to buy an fps?)
Last edited by D1g1tal5torm on 11/10/2011 11:07:10 AM
it's for the same people who bought cod4 3 times so far.
Friction, I advise that you read ben's review of MW3 and some of his comments in that section. All these comments about it being the same game is ridiculous.
Sad….
I purchased the hardened edition and I can honestly say that I'm thoroughly enjoying elite(when I can access it). Pretty psyched that I'll be getting all the map packs as well. It's the gift that keeps on giving 🙂
P.S. Playing MW3 and Skyrim simultaneously is tortue.
ok Im a gamer and I dont get it. Pay $50 more for what? things you cant eat, wear, touch…ect? I really dont get it. MW3 not getting it…its too easy for me. Is it me or do some of the people who play it act like they are superman. Im like "calm downits just a game. ok ur nice but your not the nicest to play and will never be." All im saying and I think Highlander would agree….I rather be Clark Kent then Superman in this one. Good post by the way highlander.
