Right now, there are thousands of people around the country, waiting outside a GameStop or other participating retail location, ready to file in and snag their copy of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 shortly after midnight. It's crazy.
Now, this always gets me thinking. Is there any game out there that would make me do such a thing? I mean, we're not talking about a week early; we're literally talking about a few hours, as the stores will be officially open in the morning. Furthermore, one has to assume that if you're waiting outside at midnight, you have no intention of going to school or work the next day, which is just pathetic . If you're doing that, you need to reassess your priorities.
But if there was a game that I desperately wanted, I suppose I might join in on some midnight festivities. But I can't really think of a title that would do this to me…maybe I'm just getting old. I don't consider myself any less of a gamer these days and yet, even if it was a game I knew I'd adore, like Grand Theft Auto V , I'd just get it on launch day. Really, I don't have ADD. I can wait a few hours to play a game. I don't want to take anything away from the hardcore fans (even if they are a tad frightening), but I do have to question incentive and motivation…
Wait, I know the game. A true-blue Final Fantasy VII remake. For the PS3, on Blu-Ray. The same damn game only in glorious HD. Yeah, that would do it. Midnight launch, here I come!
I have a job, so…
Midnight launches are a waste, imo. Even if i did go get a game at midnight i'd be too tired to play it and i'd wait until the next day anyway.

You're crazy man obviously you've never been to a midnight launch: tournaments, food, free stuff, more free stuff, and chill with your friends. Great way to spend a midnight just saying
MODERN WARFARE 3 woooooo!!!
I get almost all my games at midnight at the Walmart down the street. For most launches, there's no traffic in the store and if I'm too tired to play when I get home it's sitting there waiting for me before the stores open and the delivery trucks are running.

@Jdogtoocool
Did u have a job man???
A free game maybe?
Hahah, yeah. I might stay up for a free game too but that would be if I had nothing to do the next day. If it were a work day I'd just end up losing the same amount of money or more in lost hours than I would getting the free game. Also I would look like a retard to my employer and everyone I work with.
If there was ever a midnight lauch for a popular game I like and I were free that night, I would consider going more so for the experience than the actual game.
A free game maybe?
I did for Uncharted and BF3. Those are the only two I have ever done it for. I don't have a lot of Tuesdays off work to stay up late to do that.
SKYRIM
Ditto my good friend. In fact, I have the 11th – the 15th off in order to savor every gorgeous second. Halo 2 was actually my 1st midnight launch game. It ended up not being worth going for. I think it was also my 1st special edition game. Hey, that's a good question Ben. What was the 1st midnight lauch game? Um, in the US at least.

I work in the morning early so midnight launch is not my thing… That being said ME3 will be a day one purchase for me, can't wait until 3/6/12!
Skyward Sword.
Hell yeah! Im getting the gold wiimote bundle. Its perfect since I don't have motion plus.
Me too. I have a motion plus adapter some where but I can't find it. I preordered my Skyward Sword/Gold Wiimote bundle from Amazon as soon as it became available. Glad I did because they are all out now. Apparently Nintendo is releasing those in limited numbers.
if it wasnt motion controlled i'd be there at midnight buying the best edition of the game after i bought my own nintendo wii the day before. but since theres no standard controls, i'll get it whenever my brother decides to buy it.
Why in the world would Jawk get 5 thumbs down for saying Skyward Sword? Is it just becuase it is a Nintendo game or becuase people think there is something wrong with the game? I thought it has been getting good reviews.
Looks at johnld's comment above.
Is it becuase the lack of standard controls? I did not know it lacked standard controls. I guess I can understand some people having a problem with that.

Lol, because they're haters.
In regards to the controls, from what I have read they are quite good and are making some wish more developers would have taken the time to really explore what Wii with Motionplus has to offer. I for one can't wait to try them out. Doesn't bother me one bit that they don't offer standard controls. Skyward Sword is said to control nothing like Twilight Princess. Twilight Princess was just a GameCube port where as Skyward Sword takes full advantage of the Wii Motionplus.
Dare I say it? Ima get more thumbs down for this *snickers* but so far, as cool as Move is, I still don't think it's as good as the Wii's controls. Nintendo was justified in going with their sensor bar design. Metroid Prime compared to Killzone 3 Move, Metroid's controls win by a longshot. Killzone was way too jittery and all over the place. But Move is still young. So well see if it can top the Wii when it comes to performance and playability.
i'm not a hater of legend of zelda, jawk knows that and i believe i let everyone here know that legend of zelda is my #1 franchise of all time. theres a reason why i bought the gamecube version of twilight princess. its because i want to relax when playing my games. i dont like to play a game that i have to swing my arms around the whole time. i have the move and my sister has the wii and i do play games for both. but in my opinion, if you're playing a game as big and popular as zelda, an established franchise, they should let us play it the way we want to and not force motion controls on us. with that, i didnt say i wouldnt play skyward sword. i'm just not as excited about it as previous zelda games. it used to be that i'd buy a nintendo system just to play the new zelda game but this i passed on a new system for myself completely. lucky for me, my brother and sister are also zelda fans so i'll play it when they get the game.
I know you're not a hater John. I wasn't talking about you. Just the 8 cowards who thumbed me down without having the guts to say why.
I'm going for Skyrim. Also very excited for the MGS HD collection tomorrow!
Ditto on the MGS. Going up against COD takes balls. Kojima, I'm sure you have a set to swing good sir. A true patriot knows where his duty lies 🙂
I can't wait to play the MGS collection. I have heard many great things about Peacewalker. It's even referred to as MGS 5 by some MGS fans. I don't own a PSP so I have never had the chance to play it.
I'm torn. Do I get the MGS HD collection? Or wait for Snake Eater 3DS? I never cared for MGS2 and Iike Peace Walker just fine on my PSP.
@Jawknee.
The MGS HD collection also includes the MSX Metal Gear games, i don't think that makes a difference though.
I see where you are coming from, i myself don't care much for MGS2 either (although i will probably try and platinum it anyway). Unfortunately for me my PSP's umd drive bit the dust, so i can't play PW on it anymore. And on top of that i was never able to get the second disk for MGS3 subsistance, so i missed out on MG1 & MG2.
If the only game on the collection you really want to play is MGS3 then your probably better off waiting for the 3ds version, they added things like over the shoulder aiming and crouch walking (i wish those where in the HD collection).
the only game i have done that for was gta iv. but now i wouldnt because amazon will get it to me release day. so save my gas and sit at home til the new game shows up i can play one i already own.
The ONLY game I have ever gone to a midnight launch for was Star Wars Battlefront 2 :p. I was still in grade school to lol. Other than that I don't think they are totally worth it. I'd rather just rest up and wait the next day and pick a copy up in the morning. Now a days most stores have newly released games in stock most of the time. I guess some people have the conception that if they don't go to a midnight release for AAA titles such as MW3 they won't get an early copy to play and will have to wait quite some time to get a copy. I got a copy of BF3 limited edition 2 days after its launch. Some of my friends go just for a neat little social outing and get a game only to go back home and have a few good laughs before school starts the same morning.
Dude, I want BF3 sooo badly. And I mean Star Wars Battlefront 3.
I have to agree with ffv7 remake I wish I had a hr with sqnx they would set records I swear and all would be well
Ive just got back from my midnight launch shift at Game that i still tackle along with my other work, the 300+ people that turned out were losers, man lol Hollaring and cheering upon entering and purchasing.
I stood there rolling my eyes….blowing the dust off the only copy of WKC2 we have….
*sigh*
Anyway, Ni No Kuni could make me. The next Duke might. A new Dark Cloud will.

I dont think theres any game that would make me do that! I mean, they are games, not gold or diamonds, I can wait a a week to get a game and still be happy! and if Im like crazy for that game, ill just pre-order it! 🙂
Only midnight launch I ever attended was for Modern Warfare 2. It was worth it.
Only other one I might attend was Modern Warfare 3 (but I didn't feel like going), and definitely the FF VII remake, as you mentioned, Ben.
Shenmue 3. Actually I would drop everything and fly to Japan to help Yu Suzuki make the game if he asked me.
I agree completely with that.
I stood in line for 4 hours to get Halo 2 at midnight. It wasn't worth it then. Even if the game happened to be real good(well, I didn't think so), it still wouldn't have been worth it.
Anymore, there's just no way I'd risk making myself sick, sleep deprived, or misguided with how I value my time than to wait around until the dead of night just to get a game. A game that has no doubt been pressed and shipped to the tune of a million or more. The supply is definitely rarely an issue to meet the demand as it is.
Consoles, though, I did it for PS2. It was worth it and very exciting. THat just meant a 4 hour wait and supply was extremely limited.. but there's no way I can hack the 24hour+ waits gamers will sacrifice these days. No way, not never.
No game, never have, never will
I just wanted to wish you a Happy 59th birthday, I'll be joining you 11 Jan.
thanks Techy,
Another Scorpio, H.B. to you too!
So just how many yearly notches are you going to be putting on your belt on the 11th ???
FFXIII did, and it was not worth it. But I didn't have anything to do the next day so why not get a whole nights gaming in? People awake at midnight rarely wake up when stores open anyway.
I hope Ben doesn't mind but I feel this is a decent spot to push some satire: 10 Things You'll Need At Tonight's Modern Warfare 3 Launch:

I think I've only attended GTA IV, God of War III, and Uncharted 3's midnight launch. I'm still not sure about Skyrim's midnight launch though… but I'm 100% sure I'm not gonna attend MW3 because FPS is not my thing.
I don't like midnight releases, I get most of my games during the day. Never went to a midnight release at all.
I stood in line for Grand Theft Auto 4, Call Of Duty: Black Ops and Uncharted 3. I was planning to stand in line for Super Smash Brothers Brawl but a massive snowstorm scuttled that. I did see the lines for Starcraft II and Halo: Reach. I intend to line-up for Grand Theft Auto V. I am going to go see the lines of sheep tonight for MW3, just to snicker at these hipsters.
I did it for Uncharted 3, which I don't usually do… I ended up with a bunch of free Uncharted stuff and a free 200 piece Chick-fil-a nugget tray. That's pretty much the cost of the game!
Did you eat em all that night?
yea its crazy alright my brother and his friend are in line at EB right now.
i've never been to one but i think GTA V could be my first. i'm not one of those guys who must get their game the minute its out i just go in the morning. but i've always wanted to go to one of these so.. yea GTA V i'll be there
I overheard a cashier at my Gamestop 6:30PM saying there are more than a thousand people coming for it at midnight. Wow.
ha yea and i can only imagine the amount of people at time square
I'm sure we'll be seeing a lot of MW3 launch party videos on the internets the day after too.
I waited for Batman Arkham Asylum Collector's Edition, just to show off that I bought it.
I was so caught up in waiting for my Uncharted 3 Collector's Edition to arrive from Amazon that I forgot to preorder the Hardened Edition at Gamestop. Had to get the 360 version of from the only company that has it (Gamestop)for $99.99 online only. Looks like I'm gonna have to buy a 360 from my cousin who got his after buying a PC.
Gonna be waiting for midnight launch of Assassin's Creed Revelations.

Only game that would make me would be suikoden 6
