Modern Warfare 3 Pre-Orders End Up At Around 9 Million

Battlefield 3 sold five million units right off the bat; this was on the strength of three million in pre-order sales.

Well, in direct comparison and according to Lazard Capital Markets analyst Atul Bagga, Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has tallied close to a whopping nine million in pre-order sales . That's 70% over 2009's Modern Warfare 2 and 55% above last year's Black Ops . Lazard Capital expects MW3 to sell over 20 million units by the end of 2012; for the record, Black Ops sold 25 million all told over the course of its lifespan.

Yeah, you can bet that a whole lot of people are currently waiting outside their local GameStop, lying in wait for midnight. Maybe I'm just too old for the concept of midnight launches; I can't think of any game I want bad enough that I need to have it in my hands a few hours before it's available on store shelves.

That used to be any new Final Fantasy but…well, whatever.

Well I guess I was wrong when I said I didn't think MW3 would outsell blops.

I think that's a mindless disrespect of a large share of fellow gamers.

It's like they should say, "X million slow minded, aimlessly wandering zombies with wizard hats" when they read about the Skyrim preorders.

EDIT: … No, my example was funny so it's not like your comment. Mine reminded me of Gallo in Fallout 3, the ghoul with the party hat. He's cool. Your comment is not.

This means the mainstream is taking over the video games. First was music games (Guitar Hero and clones), then motion controls (Wii and improved iterations), then FPS (CoD and its rivals) and 3D at the same time. What is going maintstream now?…

We'll be a minority soon enough… And I say minority for people who play videogames because they ENJOY it and not because EVERYONE'S doing it…

Oh come on. You are implying that it's impossible to enjoy a fast paced action game? That MW3 will have more than 20 MILLION players that's not enjoying themselves? Geez…

I guess these posts are mainly meant to be funny, but seriously, look at ourselves here. This is pathetic.
You all sound like some sulky guy whose girlfriend has found someone new. "Oh, that asshole, I bet he's gonna beat her and stuff. She's just so dumb. Dumb I say! Leaving RPG for COD. What a mindless drone she is! What about meeeeee… *sob sob*"

Yeah. MW3 may not be a bad game, but that doesn't change the fact that jRPG'ers are being left out in the cold.

Is there anything with substance anymore left within our culture (western culture)? Everything is so fast and superficial : fast food, twitch-instant gratification games, instant gratification cinema, fast relationships. How much of the past week do people in our culture remember? If you were to direct that question at a random person, chances are that they wouldn't be able to tell you much. Why? Because everything is so sickeningly abrupt- there's so much but all of it translates to very little. Disturbingly paradoxical isn't it?

And the most infuriating part of all this is that videogames, which have always been to me an entertainment and art form unadulterated by the quick-fix instant gratification culture in which we are immersed are now becoming just that: a quick fix experience.

People who don't like CoD should go whine some place else. This article is about a record breaking pre-order for a video game. We should be happy that gaming has come this far and gets the recognition it deserves.

Oh, and for those who think CoD is for "twitchers," go watch the commercial Ben posted and take note; You are the n00b.

WorldEndsWithMe
WorldEndsWithMe

That's kind of the problem, the success of MW doesn't bespeak the advancements gaming has made as an entertainment medium.

That's like getting on a group of people that have an issue with the #1 movie in America being a Justin Bieber flick. Just because something is successful does not mean it's good for the industry as a whole. Mediocrity should not be encouraged.

Well, that's the thing, LV…MW3 is hardly "mediocre" in the bigger scheme of things. I mean, it just isn't.

I don't think the Pre-orders mean anything. I am not sure for MW3, but all the previous COD preorders have a $20 gift card. Sony's games never have $20, at most I see $10. For $40, of course more gamers will preorder. Last year's COD is still selling for $40. So theres no reason to not jump in on the first day, if you plan to get it eventually.

I think the reason for such generous gift card amounts are because these games rely heavily on multiplayer gameplay. So they need to have the largest amount of gamers on the first day.

Cod has mediocre AI, an old engine, outdated graphics, I think it's mediocre even if it is executed very well.

Wraith

World, you fail to realize that people don't buy COD for renowned graphics. Cod players don't care about the engine or "mediocre AI". They buy it for one prime reason: multiplayer. Millions of people flock to this franchise because it offers a refined multiplayer experience. But on the other hand, things like graphics and story/campaign are very important to me, which is why i bought U3.

PSTan

That's 45 million dollars worth in pre-orders… you would think money like that would be put to better use lol.

In all seriousness I have never bothered with preordering games, I just walk into the store and buy the game. I will pick up MW3 eventually, because unlike Yukian's point of view, I actually enjoy MW3, not because everyone else i playing it.

Then you, my friend, is in the minority with me…

I play games 'cause I enjoy them; I like CoD, but 'cause I majorly SUCK at playing FPFPS (Fast-Paced First-Person Shooter) I gave up playing them and there's no one who can make me buy another one again…

remember the time when preorders meant that actual game copies would sell out. now its all about preorder bonuses. we sure as hell know that there wont be a shortage of modern warfare 3 games, minus collectors edition of course. now to wait 2 years to finally get this game when its worth the price.

Prepare to be inundated with articles saying that it has once again broken day 1 sales records and is once again the largest entertainment launch of the year, if not all time. *Le Sigh* All I can say is congrats to Activision, Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer. I'm not saying, no matter how much I would like to.

went to walmart because i wasn't able to pre order the hardened edition, and walmart wasn't allowing the pre orders for hardened.. so it was my only chance.. They only had 4 hardened in stock, and i got 2 of them 😀 (cousin had 2 work, picked his up too)

am finishing my beer, and popping her in old Sonya (yes, i've named my ps3) i plan on playing the crap out of it tonight 😀

I find it quite sad that some 'gaming snobs' have the arrogance to look down their noses at other gamers just because they love COD. I buy other games too – love uncharted, gears of war, infamous etc – but cod is just what i enjoy the most – just because you dont like the game this means im a 'mindless drone/ sheep / insert other superior comment'. It really is quite pathetic. If you dont like the game – fine – but to hunt down every article relating to cod so you can post 'how much you hate cod more than every one else so im the coolest' is extremely immature.
Maybe being 40 years of age has me out of touch with how kids these days think.
I'll be picking up my preorder and a bottle of Glenmorangie on the way home from work tomorrow – wife has been forewarned

If that makes me a mindless drone and not part of the cool crowd – pretty damn sure i can live with that.

Ugh,
This just proves that there are to many sheeple in videogames (no offance to anyone on here who brought it). I for one blow off any all Call of Duty games. as for me Uncharted 3, Skyrim, AC Revelations & Metal Gear Solid HD Collection are my final for games of the year.

Sorry no offance man but reviews mean jack to me. I know what i want to play and what i don't want play and call of duty is one of the many titles under the don't want to play heading. i'll probably buy it down the line a couple of years from now when it hits below eighteen used and enjoy it for its signalplayer campaign.

None taken fella. These games are really about the mp tho.

It'd be the same as saying I'm buying UC for the mp.

Underdog15

Except UC's multiplayer is pretty good, actually.

Anyways, it's kind of strange to insult a general population then follow it up with a general apology… I'm not sure what to think. Are you calling them sheeple or are you taking it back? It's like me saying, "Every single person in North America is an ass…. no offense to any north american's, though…" Doesn't work.

As for reviews, Digitalstorm, they do not assist anyone who doesn't like previous CoD entries. It deserves a decent 8.5-9 score, if you ask me, for doing exactly what it's trying to do well. But people who aren't a fan of the last couple CoD's need to know this game isn't going to remedy that.

Hmmmm,
about all those pre-orders……

I wonder how many of those were done also, just because of the added massive contest that WM3 & Gamestop has joined together once again to do?

….ike winning a MW3 jeep, a whole living room worth of gaming equip, etc, etc.

Plus, the 360's MXB has been advertising it all week too

Good for infinity ward. They're going to do it again!!! Thats awesome I guess. I guess what bothers me is that almost every single review i've read says it's the same thing with a little bit of tweaks and it's still getting mid to upper 90's scores. Meanwhile, U3 was too much the same thing and pulled an 80 or something. Does anyone see anything wrong with this? Maybe it's just me. Anyways, back to battlefield I go. LOL
