It's almost done.

And it had damn well better be, considering the Japanese release date is December 15. Producer Yoshinori Kitase told Famitsu.com (as translated by Andriasang ), that Final Fantasy XIII-2 is nearly complete.

Speaking in a short Q&A during the London part of the European media tour for the game, Kitase said he's actually playing through the game right now. He says the adventure is "packed with many elements," including different routes via the Historia Crux system and various collecting missions. He thinks FFXIII-2 has a "great balance between story and game elements," and the Historia Crux feature really encourages replays.

For instance, you may come across a boss-level enemy that will annihilate your party during the first play-through of a certain area. But after building up, you can reopen the Historia Crux and try again. …I just hope getting suddenly wiped out like that won't cause controllers to go hurtling into TV screens. That could prove problematic.

Anyway, December 15 for Japan and January 31 for the US. Although I still maintain that it's gonna be more like RPG Lite, I have very high hopes. How can I not? It's Final Fantasy ; I can't help it; it's like a chemical reaction.

Just as long as it's out on time and we can move onto Versus XIII, Square, then thumbs up to the news.

Crossing my fingers we see ANY footage of Versus at Jump Festa this year.

Ok, so I just have to ask:

*What* is this/these "FF Versus" game(s)? Are they a different kind of FF? A fighting game with the FF characters? Or what?

an action Japanese rpg. As of now it is exclusive to PS3.

I'll put my fingers in too, but only because 13-2 and versus are partially holding up kingdom hearts 3.

Shadowscorpio,
So it's just another Final Fantasy? A different story? Why is it called "Versus"?

Excelsior1
Excelsior1

i always thought it was called versus becuase it's supposed to be a more realistic take on the ff univerese. all you need to know is it's supposed to take place in the ff13 universe. it is neither a prequel or sequel. it's supposed to be darker and more realistic. it's a real time 3rd person action jrpg with a battle system similar in style to kingdom hearts battle system.

it remains ps3 exclusive for now but wada mentioned in a share holders meeting there is a possibility of a 360 port. he's tweeted about it as well. he said something like it remains ps3 exclusive for now. key words being for now. let's keep our fingers crossed. square owes the ps3 some love.

It's called Versus because it is Kingdom Hearts producer Tetsuya Nomura's take on Final Fantasy, like versus Wada. And anybody who is against Wada in any way is good 🙂

Different story, characters and time period but supposedly same universe for whatever that's worth.

So, FFXIII was such a huge success that they have back-burnered Vs? Whatever Square Enix, I no longer hang on your words. Unlike Ben, I have zero confidence that this or any other future FF game will even merit the label RPG-lite.

SE don't make RPGs anymore as far as I am concerned, in fact as far as I am concerned SE are no more.

Ben Dutka PSXE

Oh, I don't have confidence. I have HOPE. There's a huge difference. 😉

TheHighlander

I wish I could maintain hope. But based on the total lack of a real FF game from them, the paucity of JRPG support – unless you are into retrogaming – and rumor mill saying that Vs is going to 360, and that FFXIV is also 360 bound (reason for delays?); I'm currently in the "Square Enix can go die in a corner for all I care" school of thought.

I hate to use this old standby but it's just sound business sense, they don't want attention lavished on Versus, they want it on the first upcoming product. But Nomura has said he is very excited to get the spotlight on Versus right after XIII-2 and Type-0 are out the door.

TheHighlander

Oh, so it's not just XIII-2 before Versus, it's Type 0 as well. Want to bet on whether Versus slips behind something else?

Business is business be damned, screwing your existing customers in favor of potential new ones is an awful business model.

Type-0 is done thankfully.

I hope that Versus 13 does not go multiplat but in the case that it does, at least we know that the PS3 version will not be compromised. I trust Tetsuya Nomura's vision more than SE's these days.

I may not have a turn-base battle system but based on what Tetsuya has mentioned about the game, it may have the jrpg elements that were missing from FF13.

hmm. getting wiped out sounds bad at first but i always enjoy returning to an area leveled up and returning the favor. there were some absolutely brutal mark missions in ff13. even with a maxed out party i still had some problems until i got my paridigms right. i am proud to say i did complete all the mark missions. that giant cacatur was a beast. his 10000 needle attack would often stun your party unless you had the right equipment. the toughest mark was the last one.

vercingetorix was probably the toughest enemy in the game and that's including boss battles. his impentrable aura was annoying becuase he would heal himself. his wind shear/petulance combos were deadly. i had to experiment a lot with my paridigms and equipment to bring him down. after that brutal fight you are "rewarded" with 5 second cut scence of lightning saying it ends here. then she cuts him down. that's it. i was expecting a little more of a reward. oh yeah you get a gold watch as a reward as well. oh well.

I hear ya. Took me a considerable amount of time to finish every single mission, let alone 5 star all of them. FF XIII is a classic example of a game that puts you through hell with weak rewards, sometimes none. Gil being a prime example…

Best way to build gil that I found is to just keep doing mission 63 over and over. That's not to say that it still isn't tedious.

Excelsior1

eden: leviathan plaza was a great spot to level up and obtain gil. equip vanille with the malbaro wand and collector's catalogue. use her as a saboteur and take on the adamantoise. summon your eidilon at the start of the battle to bring him to his knees. then just have vanille keep casting her death spell. she can often take him out in one hit if your lucky. he frequently drops a platinum ignot which you can sell for 150,000 gil. plus you get 40,000. cp. there is a save sphere nearby. after you defeat the enemies in the area just save your game and quit. when you reload the enemies will have respawned so you can rinse and repeat. one of best leveling spots in the game.

@ Ex

That is a good spot. I'm actually tough enough with the right paradigms to take him down by fighting head on.

I like doing the mission 63 because its a guaranteed gold nugget as a mission reward which sells for 60,000 plus the adamtortoise has a chance to drop platium ingots and traps. (its actually the adamtortoise with NO armors. The easier one to defeat).

The sacrifices and female soldiers in eden hall have a good droprate for perfumes which sell for 12,500 gil. Between the strategy you mentioned and the 2 that I mentioned, I honestly think that these are truly the methods for gaining gil in this game that are worthwhile.

Oh goody! Collecting missions!

It's like weak-minded developers are clueless as to how to add fun trophies into their games so they get together and say "Ok, we're almost done, we just need a couple more trophies. Go back to your desks and start sprinkling shards and orbs all over the place."

I will talk on and on about how Final Fantasy isn't as good as it used to be and then someone can say: "There's a new FF title coming out, that's not a spin off" and I go crazy.

What an evil corporation Square Enix is.
Is this how 360 fans feel? Constantly spat upon by a company but unable to escape it's clutches?

That said, I liked FF13, but I know it was not what we wanted.
Let's hope FF-13-2 is.

This is the first time ever for me to get excited about not pre-ordering a game or buying it later. I can only hope that I'm not making a mistake, although it can be remedied by changing my mind about the latter.

I like the whole, "Woops, this guy just owned me. I'll have to come back later" concept. It helps make the game feel less linear.

I'm mildly optimistic about this game, and I'll probably always have hope for the next Final Fantasy, since every one is different from the one before it. Don't like 13? That's okay, 15 will be completely different. Who's to say they won't hit the bulls-eye eventually? I mean, they've certainly thrown enough darts!
