Once you play Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception on your TV next week, you'll understand why the critics have once again gone nuts for another Naughty Dog masterpiece.

Of course, you have to own a PlayStation 3. This fact means worldwide sales potential is virtually sliced in half, as most big productions these days are multiplatform and release for both the PS3 and Xbox 360. But the developers have made it clear why their vision only works on Sony's platform and now, in a new T3 interview , Nathan Drake voice actor Nolan North echoes those sentiments.

"One of my first questions was why isn’t this multiplatform? You’d sell 25 million copies if it was multiplatform. The problem is only the PS3’s processor is powerful enough to be able to handle all the information. Naughty Dog pushes that processor to the break, it pushes the PS3 to its limits. Because they are so passionate about the project, I would certainly hope that in the next generation of consoles that Uncharted would get the nod to continue to push those boundaries."

No, he's not a programmer; we assume he's just repeating what he has heard. As for Uncharted in the next generation (PS4), North said he's "not really privy to that type of information" but if a new machine does come about, he hopes the franchise has an opportunity to once again blow people away. It'd be about taking the Uncharted experience to "another level." …I'm sorry, but is that possible?

I think Ratchet and clank displays great graphics when compared with pixar stuff. Obviously its not quite there but it's so close it's worth the mention.

Still, I heard that a single frame in a Pixar film takes minutes to render in a huge computing farm. Comparing to how the PS3 has to be able to render at least 30 frames per second, I personally think that Pixar quality is still ways off. Although Uncharted's graphics are awesome, I am fairly certain that it could be a lot more awesome with an ever more powerful piece of hardware and that true photorealism will not be coming from our consoles until the PS5 or PS6 generation.

It's the best argument for keeping some exclusives, well, exclusive: you can push that platform's hardware much farther than if you're worried about having it run on two completely different systems. And considering how great PS3's horsepower is, it'd be a crime for games like Uncharted to go multiplat.

You know…as cool as it would be to see another Uncharted 4…it isn't Naughty Dog's tradition to continue a franchise the generation after it was established.

The last Uncharted game we'll see will most likely be a racing game…as there was Crash Team Racing and Jak X.

I wish there was another Uncharted 4…but as my hopes that there will be another Jak (made by Naughty Dog) fell…so will this one. But hey it's alright, Naughty Dog always comes up with some of the best stuff out there, so who's to complain?

I'm not so sure about that. I just don't see them ending Drake's adventures after UC3. Yet I reserve the right to take that statement back after I play the story. ND has let Drake take the genre that Lara Croft once dominated and made it better. I think Uncharted has the same type of longevity potential Tomb Raider had

I wish people would stop asking for Uncharted to go multiplat. Naughty Dog is a friggin' subsidiary of Sony!! That's like asking for Lionhead Studios to release the next Fable as a multiplatform title. Just won't happen. Let it go already.

Excelsior1

sony might have something to say about that. ideally the start of a new gen is the best time to introduce a new ip, but it would not hurt to have some big guns in the mix at the start of next gen.

my hopes for a next gen uncharted would be that they open the game up some. it's just so freaking linear i find myself wanting to scream at times. i must be like my crazy cat becuase i don't like getting herded down a tiny little path with only 1 way to go. i want to love it and i appreciate its quality…but i only end just liking it :(. i feel like i am somehow letting down sony becuase i don't love it. i will go hide in a corner now and await my beating.

@ Kiryu

Going by what you just said, this should mean there will be an uncharted racer next? No, and this applys to the 'one IP per generation' theory too; though I don't see them making anything other than uncharted this generation, they are hardly gunna stop at three because thats 'what they've always done'. Just saying.

And really, uncharted is the best possible IP for ND – Artists aren't being forced into any particular direction (in a game like Killzone 2, for example, they are forced to make it gritty and nasty looking – beautiful scenary's are a no-no), they are allowed to create what they want, to a point, because uncharted covers both real-life locations and fantasy themes (mainly towards the end of the SP). The directors are happy, they can have a bigger interaction with the player because of the cinematic nature of uncharted, and because the theme of uncharted is so veristile; travel the world to find some mysterical treasure with historical backround, etc. The programmers – well, they have the hard life either way, ND being as ambitous as they are 😛

My point is, why would ND want to create anything else? As discussed sometime ago in an article that I forget the name of, people were saying that uncharted can go on forever – and why not? Sure, you might have to replace the voice actors when they get too old – but maybe I'm taking 'forever' a bit out of context… xD

EDIT: ^Looks up at Excelsior1's comment and; 1. Gags him. 2. Gets belt. 3. Locks door.

4. Sets up Uncharted 2 & makes him play it until he loves it.
Hm, I wonder why I brought the belt. Or why I gagged him. And why I locked the door.

>:P

They might have been until now. Listen there previous games were good, but Uncharted is on a whole different level. Uncharted is being looked at as some of the best games of the generation and arguably ever. ND won't give that up! Now they may take a break after UC3 for awhile, possibly until the PS4 launches and they spend time on another project, but we will see Drake again after UC3!

People say that and frequently point to Crash Bandicoot as proof. Crash isn't/wasn't owned by Sony or ND, and ND wasn't part of Sony then either. So their past performance is not necessarily 100% indicative of their future.

I mean, Sony will surely want their teams of excellence working on new things, but at the same time Uncharted is special, and might well make an excellent launch title Uncharted *4*) for a PS4 in 2013.

@Excelsior1: Its not like the game is one big long 2-foot wide corridor. The game has wide open areas to fight in, climb in, and sometimes explore. Yeah, there's only one way to go at the end of the day, so what? Do you really need two alternate paths just to get to the same area? Just play it and if you enjoy it, then go ahead and like it.

Technically, Golden Abyss comes out after UC3.

@Shadowpal and xombito, "OMG" your both wrong! (hopefully). The Game industry is a whole different machine than it was back then. We simply cannot predict what will come next. Making Uncharted into a kart racer would diminish the franchise. Sony and ND are too smart for that.

I highly doubt they will make a UKR(Uncharted Kart Racing) crash and jak was more cartoony uncharted isn't that wouldn't even work unless they decided to make it look cartoony then you know they would kind of be upsetting all the fans lol I just don't see them doing that.

And its hard to say that its tradition for them to do a Kart racing game because its only been twice across two different platforms maybe if this was another game on the ps4 and they actually did make make UKR on the ps3 that would make sense but following the track record of ND its not completely out of the relm of possibility but I think its highly unlikely

25 million? He's a rather optimistic individual isn't he? Besides these illusions of grandeur he does make some nice comments.

It does make me wonder if it's all worth it though. It's often said that great devs like ND deserve to be rewarded with sales. What makes them so great though? Is it not the characterizations, their action sequences, their ability to make you care? Because all these things can be done in a multiplat and would certainly be carried over from such talent as ND.

Or is it simply the graphics that make them great? I dare say UC has some of the best graphics and animations of this gen, but could they perhaps "dumb down" the graphics just enough to make the game a multiplat and therefore increase their sales and potential customers? Would the graphics even suffer THAT much?

I can't decide. Are we really supposed to be greedily holding on to exclusives because we don't want "that other console" to get this great game and in the meantime the dev isn't being fully rewarded?

I find this to be a painful conundrum.

bigrailer19
bigrailer19

It's not a conundrum when ND is a first party dev of Sonys. Its not even worth thinking about, regardless of the reasons because it simply would never happen. ND still sees a lot of money a third party dev wouldn't because Sony supports an funds projects that ND is working on.

Jawknee

Seriously Alienage, your snark and hatefilled comments as of late are on the edge of being considered flame bait. You know why consoles have exclusives. They want people to buy their console over the competition. It has nothing to do with your bratty accusation of not wanting others to play our favorite games. One company offerers quality, the other doesn't. That quality is showcased with their exclusives. It's called competition within the market place.

Can you troll any harder? You are one bitter man.

TheHighlander

You say "all these things can be done in a multiplat". OK, in that case, why aren't they? Why is it only on Sony's machine that these things are being done? Is it just that ND, a first party Studio of Sony's, is better than everyone else?

slugga_status
slugga_status

Huh? It's been said by ND themselves that they would not be able to do Uncharted on 360..Dumb down graphics just for a couple more sales?! What type of drugs are you on? Graphics would suffer immensely. I'm a 360 owner as well and I'd be damned if I ever heard Uncharted come to the 360 b/c I know it wouldn't be what it needs to be. You have to own both consoles to understand. Take Batman AA and AC..I have them on 360 thru gamefly..I'll tell you right now those games look far better on ps3..It's like saying God of War going multiplat..smh

Jawknee
Jawknee

Another thing, you seem to be saying that ND should scrafice their artistic vision so they can make more money. You may call that smart, I call it selling out. Somethings are more important than making exorbant amounts of money. I can only assume you're for mediocrtiy rather than making the best possible product.

ND obviously have artistic integrity and seem to be doing just fine without selling that out.

Alienange
Alienange

@ TheHighlander – What do you mean? Is not Mass Effect, Red Dead Redemption and Batman Arkham City perfect examples of games with great characterization, action sequences and the ability to make a gamer care?

That's the point I was trying to make when I said "all these things can be done in a multiplat."

@ slugga_status – UC2 has sold close to 5 million. Nolan North seems to think multiplat would bring that number to 25 million. Now I'm not as optimistic as that, but clearly it would be more than "a couple more sales."

@ bigrailer19 – Glad you caught on that my musings were over hypothetical questions.

Clamedeus
Clamedeus

That, and I highly doubt ND would do that just to sacrifice what they are about. I would rather have a damn good product than one that is half assed and poorly done just to grab money from the customer.

Lairfan
Lairfan

Dude, its not selfishness on our part, its the fact that Uncharted has become known for having high production values, in addition to characterization, great action sequences, etc. To take away those graphics that can ONLY (and I mean ONLY) be achieved on PS3 would be taking a part of the game away. That may also result in lower review scores, and that is not acceptable for any dev in this day and age if they want to sell their game decently.

Plus, you have to consider that ND apparently always wants to make the best product possible, graphically, plot-wise, and gameplay-wise. I don't think they'd let their game go multiplat and lose the graphical fidelity just to make a few million more. They seem to have morals, more so than other devs.

And the fact that they're owned and funded by Sony also has something to do with it.

I do kinda see your point here (for once), but I don't see it as keeping the experience away from others just for better graphics, but more of keeping the experience the best it can possibly be.

FatherSun
FatherSun

Yes. Uncharted goes multiplat. When you startup the game on your XBOX, Wii-U, etc.. the first thing that comes up is the SONY PlayStation logo.

When the game ends you get this disclaimer:

For the true Uncharted experience please play this game on a PlayStation console.

TheHighlander
TheHighlander

Alienage, I would simply say that I don't know of another game this generation that has the combination of story, character voice acting, motion capture, animation, environment, graphics, interaction with the environment, etc…that Uncharted has. Some come close. Assasin's Creed comes to mind. I don't see either Mass Effect or Red Dead being in the same league as Uncharted with the presentation, but I will concede that it's possible that either or both come close for story and character – simply because I have not played them.

The point of the article and many comments here was that the entire package could only be done on the PS3, I don't think that there is another game this generation on another platform that comes close – except Assassin's Creed (perhaps).

slugga_status
slugga_status

@ Alienage

My point is..why would water your game down just to potentially sell more copies. If you have a vision, you want to see it through..Furthermore, I highly doubt 360 only owners would even appreciate Uncharted 3. They didn't even show Alan Wake the love it deserved

I guess North isn't aware of the fact that Sony owns ND and the Uncharted IP? Asking why Uncharted isn't multi-platform is like asking why Halo, Fable, Mario and Zelda aren't multi-platform. Perhaps he doesn't understand the concept of first party games?
