With the 10th anniversary of Grand Theft Auto III , we figured it'd be a perfect time to announce the long-awaited fifth installment.

And it's here. …well, sorta. The bad news is that Rockstar only made a simple Tweet – "GTAV" – with a link to their main site . The good news can be found at that site.

Yeah, all we have is a logo right now, but look at the bottom: Trailer 11.02.11. So the official announcement trailer for Grand Theft Auto V is only a week away! Some light rumors have been circulating all year; we've heard the game would be set on the west coast, and that there would be a fair number of zany, colorful characters. That's just one example. But whatever the result, you can bet that GTAV will be amazingly popular, and perhaps the only game this generation that has an outside shot of challenging Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for the ultimate sales crown.

GTAIV went on to sell almost 20 million copies, remember, so even if MW3 sells upwards of 25 million, is it too absurd to assume that GTAV could come close…? Well, anyway, can't wait for the trailer!

I have noticed that the five and the roman number five is somehow connected to the five dollar bill. And we know that on five dollar bill is illustrated president Lincoln and the first games in series were ported to the consoles by Rockstar Lincoln studio. I think that next game will be not in the San andreas but maybe in city which resembles Washington D.C and maybe the name of the city will be Lincoln city, but that is only my theory.

I honestly find the GTA series to be incredibly over-rated, but then again, everyones' opinions are different. Great news for all the fans of the series, but if it's anything like the fourth game, I'll be skipping it.

I too think the fourth were heavily overrated, but the ones prior to that deserved all their ratings (I consider the series to start on gta3).

I'll be patiently waiting for the trailer while playing Uncharted 3..I don't know about everybody else but I've loved every GTA since III. I don't see the problem people had with IV..

Same here….I would actually be pissed if they dont retain the physics from IV. Euphoria, as I recall the name, is still one of the best physics engine (human skeletal wise) I've seen to date IMO. Star Wars used this very well as did GTA IV; Would have been nice to see that in Indian Jones if it wasn't canned. GIMME GIMME GIMME!

Despite wanting to dance a jig (and a whole lot more), my question still remains: Is GTA Still Relevant?

Be back this arvy with more thoughts.

Hmmm…why wouldn't it be relevant?

Why wouldn't any game be relevant, for that matter?

Sure, it does not enjoy the same status in the industry as it did in the previous generation. But it does seem very relevant to me…

The response to a mere teaser on the net is your answer. It got planted EVERYWHERE and some popular news outlets are proclaiming the fall of CoD with this little teaser PICTURE (obviously it's about the bigger picture though.)! They've already got politicians commenting on it and the usual protesters lining up.
GTA can't die because it's intelligent (albeit with some questionable content). CoD is literally a milking experience and will die. GTA is quality and innovation each release.

All hells gonna break loose next week.

Popular =/= relevant.

Can it still influence the industry in the way that it did in the PS2 days is what I mean.

slugga_status
slugga_status

Well depends on what you mean. When it first hit the PS2 there wasn't anything like it. Now we've seen many people try to take the same approach and some were good and some were bad.

With GTAIV they took it up another notch with the Euphoria engine. So to answer your question, I think it GTA has big time influence within the industry. The industry will want to know what R* will do next.

i'm with you guys i loved GTA IV too. the problem people had with it i guess is because it was to realistic and not as "Goofy Fun" like previous installments were. i had a bit of a beef with that at first as well. but after i moved past it and just accepted it for what it was. a grity dark disturbing realistic tale of revenge of an immigrant struggling to deal with things that happened in his past. i enjoyed it more once i got past the fact R* decided to take it in a new direction. just how i feel.

I'm one of those who was disappointed with gta4 – the first GTA I didn't even finish.
Still, when I read this news my heart skipped an extra beat. GTA has left everlasting marks in my gamer heart.
There are no other game trailer this year I look more forward to see than this one.

I understand people's problems with lV even though i thought it was solid (8.5 from me)….however, may i recommend The Ballad Of Gay Tony? It's the DLC designed with the old school GTA fans in mind. Completely OTT and brings back many quirky elements from past GTA entries.

yea man i've been telling everyone about tony and how it was more like san andreas. i love the base jumping! just getting a chopper going as high as possible and bailing out looking down on that epic city simple amazing. it was my favorite of the 3 GTA IV chapters.

Thanks for the advice guys! Worst thing is that I've had it for a long time already, but haven't even started it… Guess that goes to show what impression gta4 made on me.

But I'll give it a spin!

I hope they bring the fun back to GTA with GTAV. GTAIV had an amazingly detailed city that was awe inspiring for a few hours but then that wears off and you find out that the game itself is kinda boring. Forget about trying to be serious and gritty and bring back fun and colorful characters also bring back all the fun sandbox gameplay that was in San Andreas but was stripped out of GTAIV. Also I hope they are more creative with the missions this time instead filling the game with the same handful of mission types with slight variations over and over again.

sweet!
heres to hoping its more like san andreas, 3, and vice city and nothing like GTAIV.
if its anything like IV im done with R* games for good!
i wish we could have a san andreas game, the whole gameplay, mission style, weapon upgrades, gang vibe, in the location, with the cars and music of vice city.
just the whole tropical island happy light colourful theme was really fun.

though, on a side note this is EXACTLY why i hate R*!
they announce a bazillion games, show 1 trailer for 1 game, then announce another bazillion games!
i mean they announced MP3 what 5 years ago?
we have seen what, 2 trailers for it?
and in that time they announce GTAV and agent and say nothing about them!
i thought you were suppose to announce a game, then show it off, then release it, then announce your next game.
rinse and repeat.
not announce a game, announce another game, show off 2 trailers, announce another game, rinse and repeat.
more showing off games, and less talking about new ones!
this is why it takes so long for R* to make, and show off their games!
because there too busy creating their new game!
if they spent half their resources on games already announced, instead of new unannounced games we would get at least 1 game a year from them!
they have so many studios, why not put several on 1 project to speed it up instead of having 10 different studios working on 10 different games?
makes no freaking sense, they take WAY too long to release their games!

Lawless SXE
Lawless SXE

But their games are quality. Oh and Max Payne is all set to go in March. Meanwhile Vancouver is heading development, but they have three other studios assisting, FYI. It's annoying that AGENT's gone AWOL though, maybe they'll reannounce it alongside the PS4 as a launch title.

BTW: 2012: MP3, GTAV
2011: L.A. Noire (developed externally, but an internal studio handled the PC port, so I'm counting it)
2010: RDR
2009: GTA:EFLC
2008: GTA IV, MCLA

That's a game every year for the last four and two for next…

___________
___________

no, what i meant was we would see their games releasing yearly as in announced this year and released next.
not announced this year, then hear nothing for 4 years, then finally get a release date!
