Report: Sony Internal Studios Cranking On PS4 Games

The last rumor we heard concerning the PlayStation 4 seemed kinda vague. All we knew is that it might launch in 2013, which doesn't mean a heck of a lot.

But is Sony already starting to allocate software development resources to their new piece of hardware? According to a Develop report , sources "within Sony's internal studio structure" have apparently confirmed that first-party teams have begun "preliminary work" on PS4 games. Yeah, you read that correctly.

Furthermore, a few of those teams might be able to enter the full production phase very soon. The report doesn't name names, so we just have to speculate: this could involve any studio; heavy hitters include Sucker Punch ( inFamous , Sly Cooper ), Naughty Dog ( Uncharted ), Sony Santa Monica ( God of War ), Polyphony Digital ( Gran Turismo ), and Guerilla Games ( Killzone ). Sony has some amazing teams under their umbrella so anything they do should be highly anticipated.

Sony has said from the start that the PS3 will have a 10-year lifespan. But remember, that doesn't mean the PS3 can't continue on after the PS4 launches. The PS2 went strong for quite a few years after the PS3 released, remember?  The PS2 lasted a good 10 years if you look at it that way.

You must be new around here…

I too have had my PS3 since launch and I too am still enjoying it. Same goes for Max. Now maybe you should hold your fingers next time you get the urge to type something so inane.

@VallartaBoy,
I think that's kind of ignorant to say. I purchased mine when it came out, December of 06 actually so a few months after and I am still enjoying mine. They keep coming with great games so I don't see how having one for 5 or 6 years is relevant to the enjoyment that one can have with it.

5 yrs is obviously a life time for 'em. He must be in his teens. And that's being generous.

Me? I'm still enjoying my ps3. I'd welcome a new generation, but between the games yet to come and those still backlogged, I have quite a bit to hold me over.

I've been tempted to go pc. But I figure the gap is narrowing, especially with the next gen.

I figured that's why even MS decided to keep a few of their franchises exclusive to the 360 platform. Not saying the gap will completely vanish, as I'm sure the pc gaming industry is alive as it has ever been, and it will always be the ever changing bleeding edge of tech, but at least this gen we've seen that now we're doing the same genres on both platforms. Perhaps next gen, we'll be seeing even less a pronounced difference in tech.

I got my PS3 at launch as well. In fact, I camped overnight 1 month before release so I could get a pre-order.

And I have a gigantic backlog… enough of a backlog that if nothing released for the rest of the year… including this November… I would be thoroughly enjoying my PS3 for the next 2 years. I have no need for a PS4 anytime soon.

I'm not necessarily opposed to them coming out with a new console in a couple years. As long as it's backwards compatible with PS3 games….

Yea I've had my PS3 for at least 4 years now and I'm completely satisfied with what I have. I remember thinking pulling a all nighter outside Target and Best Buy but the line was just plain ridiculous..

All this info really means to me is that it's time to start saving for the PS4. Never know when it'll drop but I want to have the cash ready and in hand for the console, another controller, and games..

I guess the newbie doesn't realize how far gaming has come. None of us thought we'd be where we are today when we were playing NES

I assume ur parents paid it off (lucky u if it's true). It's never too early or too late to own a PS3. Remember, the PS3 is not 600 bucks anymore. Back then not a whole lot of people could afford it since there was not alot of PS3 games to backup the price.

VallartaBoy –

Well. As one of my fellow long time members pointed out, I have had it since launch.

Anyways, you'll have to forgive me since the PS3 still gives me plenty of entertainment value for my money.

I think it is too soon to release the PS4. There is great pressure for better hardware but if you simply look at what developers are managing to do with current hardware I am amazed we cannot wait this out for a few more years.

M$ I guess is piling on the pressure and Sony cannot be seen to fall behind. I still feel we should be able to enjoy our investment for longer. As I said in an earlier post, I will not jump onto the PS4 bandwagon immediately… Actually I may do if I know the PS4 is fully backward compatible. If it means selling the PS3 and picking up a PS4 as a direct replacement then why not.

If my PS3 games are playable and HOME "scales" up to thew new hardware, visually; then it would be more of a hardware upgrade rather than a complete platform change.

Highlander has mentioned this before. PS4 will be iterative… it will be a large step up from the PS3 with a very strong CPU and GPU.

Anyway, time will reveal all… it always does…

I strongly believe that it will be iterative in software terms, but the hardware s a big question mark. The easy option remains sticking with the Power/Cell architecture and an nVidia GPU. Changing horses would complicate matters for those that invested in learning the PS3 architecture.

Quantic Dreams's next game is probably in the works for it as well. most likely why we haven't heard anything yet. historically they've been a one title per gen dev.

And let MS get the upper hand again?!?!?

I say keep the PS4 close to the same structure as the PS3, some slight enhancements and modifications, and release sooner and cheaper with full backwards compatibility with all PS3 and PSN content.

Ahhhh… now THAT would be my dream machine!! A beefed up PS3 with X-game chat, multi-tasking between programs and software, and native 1080p resolution for ALL games!!

Makes me wonder, did Sony plan the PS3 to be 2 generations ahead of the competition? It certainly looks that way.

I would guess that they're gonna keep the cell (or upgraded version of it)and basically get more ram and a better gpu. At this point, I don't really see why they would change the cell. By today's standards it is still very powerful. But that's just my guess.

Aura7541

@Him

I agree. Looking at the PS3's best games, they all look really good. The graphics the PS3 can muster, in my opinion, are just a tad bit off from absolute perfection. I feel like the PS3 is just inches away from being the "perfect" console. I think the PS4 doesn't need a large hardware makeover like the PS3 had. I say put in a slightly more powerful set of Cell processors, double the RAM (512 mb for each the system and video), and an 8x Blu-ray drive that's compatible with the 100 gb blu-ray discs.

Sony has -ALWAYS- been at the pinnacle of technology and home entertainment. Not just video games… they've been that way forever… from televisions, to Cam-corders, to cameras, to dvd players, VCR's back in the day, blu-ray, surround sound systems, laptops, everything.

It's part of Sony's mission and values. Part of their values are "Embrace Change" –> by anticipating the future, remaining agile and adaptable, and creating and seizing new opportunities.

Sounds a lot like how they anticipated blu-ray in the future and why they released such a high end (but expensive) console like PS3.

They've always been that way. They will never make something cheap just to be the first to release. It would be a gamble, for one, but it would also go against their mission and values.

@Underdog15,

I believe Sony got whooped back then when it was a dogfight between Sony's Beta Max tape (which was not much of a big difference in size) and I think it was JVC would started the VHS tape. So Sony couldn't have started the VCR player. Now, everything is different.

Woo hoo, while I'm loving the stuff devs can do now, I absolutely believe there's been great strides in processing over the last 6 years to easily warrant the cost of new hardware. Hardware, like every playstation has done before, takes games to another level. It has nothing to do with not enjoying what we have now, gamers like games, but everything to do with how much deeper devs can take us into their creations with the tools they're empowered with.

That wouldn't surprise me. Both Sucker Punch and Guerilla are supposed to be working on new IPs, as are Santa Monica, Zipper and Media Molecule. If Ubisoft can claim that it's too late in the generations to launch a new IP, then surely Sony may be thinking the very same thing. Most of them will have a 3 year+ dev cycle for launch games if I'm right, which should really show off what the hardware is capable of from Day 1.

Why do we need new consoles? Three more years with my PS3 before the PS4 comes would be nice.

Sony is most likely building from the enormous effort and feedback from developers working on VITA. If the PS4 has even half of the support that the VITA seems to bet set with on launch then PS4 will be hot out of the gate.

I have always said that the PS4 will be like a PS3 with a hefty injection of technological hormones. Faster drives, more memory, better connectivity and improved interface. All things the PS3 already does. Only Better. Faster. Stronger!

More memory and more CPU/GPU. HDDs are not getting faster, but a 4X or 8X Bluray seems mandatory.

Highlander, all they really need to do is give the console a solid state drive right out of the box, lol. By the time the PS4 is out, it'll most likely be cheap enough to to include such a thing in a base product. Voila, faster hard drive speeds making faster loading times. If not a SSD, then this may come in handy. It's already much cheaper than expected, so by the release of the PS4, they could probably have made a drive twice this speed if SSD's haven't began ruling the market over SATA by then, lol.

There is no way developers are working on PS4 games. The hardware is not even near finished, I doubt it's passed a 10% completion. The original source actually stated that game CONCEPTS are being worked on, which is pretty obvious. Concepts is the first stage, there's a major difference between developing a game and being at concept stage. This PS4 news http://playstation4.net is claiming that it wont be announced until 2015, and released in 2016. There is a lot of growth still with PS3 so I see it coming out 2015 or 2016.

Maybe they're giving the game producers a hardware edge like the Vita. Also, take into consideration how long it may take to fully make these games, it could take 2-4yrs more to get anything done or quite possibly to even get the hang of it. A problem with the PS3 was that developers had problems developing for it because of how insanely awesome the PS3 is coded and all that. It's already relevant with the Vita that they've learned their lesson from that and will probably let their software and hardware developers get in on the console as a whole. Just seems pretty smart to me. I wonder how terrible the next XBox will fail due to not learning from their past mistakes, lol. But who knows, maybe they'll catch on with Sony's idea and copy them like a lot of other things they've done, lol.

Hmmmm, I wonder, will it take 5 years to produce the first next gen games like so many companies claimed at the start of this gen? If this is the case I don't expect to see a new system until '15 or '16…

Heck i'm still working on Ps2 games. Unless there are some seriously amazing reasons to purchase the console I doubt i'll pick one up in the first few years. Then again I haven't purchased a lot of games for this generation anyways. Not a lot of stuff out there I enjoy any more, maybe i'm just getting to old.

Theres no need for a PS4 until earliest 2014, PS3 has lots off grunt still left in it, I'd understand if the next X-Box comes as GOW3 and Forza 4 has already maxed out that hardware. PS3 multi plat games will look better when the next X-Box is released as 360's dated hardware is what limited lazy developers sharing ports with PS3. bring out the new X-Box soon so its hardware can almost match the current PS3.

No surprise here ! Console cycles roughly run between 5-7 years so the PS3 is coming up on it's 5th anniversary.

If the PS4 were to come out in 2013, Sony would need to start developing games now.

I have come to the conclusion that if the PS4 comes out in 2013, I'd be okay with it, even though that would still feel a little early for me. But only if it has backwards compatibility.

But anyways, I can't wait to see what these devs are making with the PS4 tech!
