One of the earliest reveals at The Future of Gaming event was Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The trailer showed off some cinematics as well as gameplay and features a voice over from Peter, introducing the journey of Miles Morales as he takes over the role of the web-slinger.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales follows the events of 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man and its DLC, The City That Never Sleeps. Miles join the Spider-Man family thanks to some events that I won’t spoil here. It looks like Miles Morales is going to bring some cool new abilities to the Spider-Man repertoire as well. But this isn’t exactly a sequel. Or an expansion.
There was some confusion about what this game is thanks to a comment from Simon Rutter, EVP head of European business at Sony Interactive Entertainment:
“I guess you could call it an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game. There’s a substantial Miles Morales component — which is the expansion element — but also within the game as well there’s been major enhancements to the game and the game engine, obviously deploying some of the major PlayStation 5 technology and features.”
Later, developers at Insomniac confirmed that Miles Morales is indeed a standalone game and not just a simple expansion.
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the next adventure in the Marvel's Spider-Man universe. We will reveal more about this standalone game at a future date. #MilesMoralesPS5 pic.twitter.com/GOTAvNhUaF

Basically, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a standalone game that isn’t quite a sequel or expansion in the traditional since. Many have compared to the likes of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. It is a different kind of expansion of the universe created by the first game, continuing the story and focusing on a different character. This could be an interesting way to flesh out other characters and might be something we’ll see more of in the future.
It’s also worth noting that Miles Morales is also made to take advantage of the power of the PS5 and is designed with that in mind. This mean things like, near instant travel across the map and making use of the feedback the Dualsense will be using.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales is set to launch holiday 2020 which puts in the right spot to possibly be a launch title
