In the wake of immense backlash over Sony requiring PlayStation Network accounts to play its PC ports, it seems they’re shrugging it off, asserting it’s to keep players safe.
During a recent earnings call (via PSLS), CFO Hiroki Totoki asserted that this is all to keep gamers safe… from something. Meanwhile, he also noted that the require would obviously “invite pushback.” Frankly much of the statement is slightly jarring, but that goes along with the translation.
“By offering them [PlayStation accounts], sometimes, that tends to invite pushback. But for live service games, in order to maintain order of the gaming, so that anybody can enjoy the game safely, we need to create environment conducive to that.”
Not sure what Sony thinks it’s keeping players safe from, but considering this isn’t a live service exclusive problem, which some may dismiss more than others, it seems like Sony is heading down the road of artificially bottlenecking its success on PC.
