What If inFamous: Second Son Had Launched With The PS4?

The PlayStation 4 appears to be doing just fine in the sales category so far.

However, here's a question many are asking- would Sony's new console be that much more appealing if inFamous: Second Son had been a launch title? It's definitely worth considering.

A launch lineup is critical for any new system and with the delay of Watch Dogs and Driveclub , the PS4 could've really used a killer game. Second Son would've proven all the more important because Killzone: Shadow Fall and Knack didn't live up to expectations, making the launch software lineup even less attractive. On top of it all, although neither game scored off the charts with critics, the inFamous titles are well loved by many PlayStation fans, and that series has earned a fiercely loyal following. The fans are vocal and very supportive.

And remember, it's an exclusive. These are precisely the titles that help push a new piece of hardware; big third-party games can help, but they're not the lifeblood of a system. Sony opted to put the new Gran Turismo on the PS3, Uncharted 4 is maybe a year off, and Second Son is the only exclusive on the immediate horizon. Lastly, don't forget that Sucker Punch's latest was one of the first games shown off when the PS4 was initially announced. It's one of the reasons why gamers everywhere viewed the new console in such a positive light; of this, I'm pretty sure.

Then again, February isn't far off so maybe it hasn't stymied PS4 sales too badly. Besides, a lot of gamers buy new consoles in preparation for the bigger titles coming down the road. But had inFamous: Second Son been available right out of the gate, I have this feeling that the PS4 would have a bit more of an edge over the Xbox One right now…

Considering the PS4 still remains difficult to obtain, I'd say it's not hurting sales to badly at all. The PS4 is selling itself right now. People want it because it's the better system, that's why it's doing well. At this point the games are just a huge plus. Of course that also depends on the type of consumer you are.

This is right on the money. If PS4s were sitting on store shelves then maybe we could consider how inFamous might have helped moved those systems. But they are not. I keep looking and have yet to see a PS4 in stock ANYWHERE.

I think inFamous WILL help sell a lot of systems. For a lot of people who (like me) are waiting for a ridiculous exclusive to push them over the edge, inFamous will, in theory, BE our launch title so to speak. Time will tell. I don't think it's any accident that inFamous will be releasing very very shortly after the time SONY expects the PS4 to become much more readily available.

+1 – in Australia, people are pre-ordering for February PS4s, so sales have been about as good as they would have been either way, and in February when it becomes more available (hopefully!) it'll have Infamous to push it along :). It's only about seven weeks away from the launch of Infamous now – good times :).

Yeah PS4 has remained sold out and I was lucky to get one off Amazon right before Christmas. X1 is in stock right now everywhere, but PS4s when they ship vanish quickly.

I think there would be moderately more of a difference in the sense that gamers want some software to buy and crow about and show off to their friends. That and media surrounding inFamous would have helped some sales.

BUUUT, I think it ultimately would have helped inFamous sales much more to be a launch title. As a later title gamers who just want anything next gen won't buy it as easily. So as a later title it will probably suffer from the same mediocre sales as the last 2 games no matter the score.

I'm looking forward to it though.

I probably would have bought one then. I love Killzone but it's not enough to get me to drop $400 on a new console.

It's a pretty dang good Killzone in any case.

Yeah, I can see how it would of but at the same time I'm plenty happy with the games I have because to me they were not a let down. If you like any of the games (which I'm really loving Killzone) then you were happy with your purchase.

It would definitely have boosted the games sales but I doubt it could have made the ps4 any hotter considering I haven't seen any in stores yet. Plenty of xbones though. That being said, I am waiting for the infamous bundle to buy mine so take from that what you will lol.

Releases on march 21st though. So it is a little further off but the extra time will no doubt make it shine.

That's the game I'm waiting for so obviously they'd have had at least one more purchase on launch day, but the more the game gets the delayed the longer I have to save.

Either way, they'll get my money.

I'm not so sure if it'd made much of a difference in the bigger scheme of things (like on the sales result for the first 12 months). But assuming that it is as good as it looks, I think it would have made a difference during launch.
As for me personally, I don't think it would have made me getting one yet, but I'd definitely be closer to doing it.

No need. The announcement is enough. As said before, PS4 is hot right now anyway. Plus, people waiting for it would eventually buy the PS4 anyway when the game releases. It's not like it's going to release years away. Releasing at launch would risk polish and possibly make a worst situation.

Ps4 still seems to be selling really well regardless of Second Son. At this stage when second son does release it seems that more people will buy it then so it could be a later sales boost at least.

I still cant see how people are saying Knack doesnt live up to expectations. Granted it's like a hybrid of crash bandicoot, jak and daxter with a few killzone/halo looking enemies but I think it works well and it definitely has lived up to my expectations.

The stupidest thing Sony did was not making GT6 a launch game. For eveyone who bought that game, such as myself, we'll be busy grinding and online racing with the PS3. That game sucks you in for months. It is the biggest reason I have no desire to get my PS4 just yet. I feel bad not contributing to the PS4's world domination at this point but what the heck do they expect?

the demand for the PS4 is already high, don't make it any higher.
i want a PS4 before 2015 lol

Aren't they selling every single PS4 they can make? I don't think you can sell many more than that. Supply will eventually exceed demand and I think Infamous will arrive in plenty of time for that.

This is a legitimate point. They might in fact be better off saving some dynamite until after the initial rush is over.

The system itself is not easy to get. Retailers get a few and they sell out so fast. It took me a month to get mine but had Infamous came out with it or before it I would have preordered instead of the very difficult task of trying to get after release. My purchase took a month so all in all I don't think Infamous had an affect.
Personally, I think whoever planned on getting a PS4 is still going to get it at some point. Playstation fans are loyal and we all know how good of a series Infamous is so a preorder sale and an overall sale is still a sale. Infamous will be the one game I'm buying without paying attention to review scores. I'm pretty sure a vast majority of PS4 owners who have played the originals are with me on that.

Perhaps when Second Sun does release, the PS4 will be over it's initial sales surge and will be in need for a new round of sales.

I'm sure I'm mistaken. Reading through the comments here proves me wrong but I've never seen Infamous as a system selling franchise. Are they good games? Yeah. But quality doesn't always bring in sales and I just personally don't see Infamous as that big game that everyone outside of the PS community wants.

It's not got the same hype ( over hyped ) as say Titanfall or Destiny (I wanted to name some exclusives for both new gen consoles but I can't think of any more hyped that the two games I'm using for examples).

It looks mighty impressive and utterly playable, so with the right promotion it's the best card Sony could have.

It does look impressive, I'll not take that from it. But as a franchise there's just something I can't put my finger on but it's not imo a system seller. Like I said, quality doesn't always equal sales.

I don't think infamous was needed at launch. The ps4 is sold out everywhere. Although the game most, such as myself, really wanted at launch was Watch Dogs..

"The ps4 is sold out everywhere"

some are just slow on the uptake 😉
PS4 would sell better if there were more systems on shelves. easy.

once again. here we are weeks later and Amazon is nothing but In Stock for XBox One. And AMazon has nothing but third parties charging massively marked up prices for PS4's.
Best Buy availability once again reveals both Online and In Store inventory of XO's.
PS4s? Ha!

nothing clear can be ascertained at this point. no matter how anxious some are about declaring victory etc.

It would have shifted some money around based on which games it drew sales away from but that's all. It might benefit Sony more by launching in March just because the supply situation should have eased up a little by then.

If Second Son had been been a launch title I know I would have picked up a PS4 as soon as I could have! But on the other hand, I'm happy to wait a bit longer for a complete game rather than a rushed one which would have added another disappointing launch title to the list.
