Rumor: Sony Both “Excited And Afraid” Of PS4’s Momentum

Well, Sony's new machine is certainly headed in the right direction, anyway.

Industry insider Ahsan Rasheed, also known as "thuway" at the NeoGAF forums, has been talking about the new console wars. He apparently has reason to believe that Sony will gain 66-70 percent market share when the dust settles, giving the PS4 control over nearly two-thirds of the market.

He has also heard that this surge is both exciting and a little frightening for Sony. As he said on his Twitter page :

"I’ve heard folks at Sony are both excited and afraid of the PS4′s momentum. Things are being read carefully, and lids are being sealed. It’s scary how much momentum Sony has going forward. I expect PS4 to gain 66-70% market share once the dust settles."

With the Xbox 360 routinely outselling the PS3 in the US for the past seven or eight years, and by a significant ratio of 2:1 and even 3:1, the turnaround is obvious. Both systems have sold about 2 million units worldwide, and it seems that both have sold about the same amount in the North American region, too. Some sources indicate slightly higher sales for the PS4 but even if it's a tie, that's a massive upswing for the PlayStation brand. Not the days of the PS2, but still an upswing.

As for Sony being excited and scared at the same time, that's understandable. Meeting demand is key.

MY guess would be that its scary for Sony because, well, they have to deliver the goods now. The games, apps, etc. And launches usually would give any company an added pressure.

Demand of the console is a concern to meet demand, but once the "dust" settles, people want to be able to do something with it. And gamers, well some, are not very patient these days. Especially when its a new system, only a few games offered to a large and diverse audience. Would backwards compatibility tided people over in the mean time? Who knows.

2014 obviously will be the year that gamers and the casual indulger will be anticipating great things. Rightly so or not.

Second Son is not far away to wet the appetite and hopefully the beginning of good times.

Keep playing!

The key is momentum. PS1 had it going into PS2, and PS2 kept it going.

PS3 got off to a rocky start, but rebuilt themselves and plunged into PS4 right off the back of a lot of really massive games. PS4 has quite an excellent first year lineup, including quite a decent launch, with inFamous hitting right around when PS4 supply should be plentiful, along with Metal Gear, Thief, and so on.

Xbox One will have a lot of that, too, but they don't have the momentum. 360 stalled out at the end and coasted to a stop, gamers in general got a punch in the gut from the X1 reveal and are still stinging from it (I still run into people who are convinced the DRM policies remained in place), plus the price–the price is all-important.

With the Wii U already halfway in the grave, PS4 taking a 2/3 market share seems totally feasible. Microsoft did to Xbox what they did to Windows. Windows 8 still sells, kind of, because a lot of people have no choice in the matter. With Xbox, they do have another choice.

great points. I agree with the PS4 having momentum. I think Sony was humbled by the PS3. I think the X1 will crash and burn in a couple of years.

Actually they don't need games even though they have been the only one to constantly deliver them. That will be no different than before. The selling point is Live Stream.
You have seen several people (as a family) broadcasting over U-stream and Twitch via the PS4 and that will sell it to casuals.I was amazed at how many people (some drunken)using it just for attention.
You had people on at opening their Christmas gifts which is connecting people in a whole new way through a console. This is why it is selling out globally.
X1 was still in stores, but people I know could not find a PS4 anywhere. So games is not even relevant or needed for mass appeal.Good thing they do deliver the games though instead of just using social features or none gaming aspects to sell.

1. Sony has been outselling xbox for the past 4 years.
2. Sony has sold more total systems.
3 Sony has more ACTIVE psn account then xbox has ACTIVE live accounts.
