Sony: Current PS4 Demand Won’t Be Met Until January/February

If you're still hoping to find a PlayStation 4 before the end of the year, you unfortunately might be out of luck.

Although some retailers may still get a few, it seems the PS4 will be "supply-challenged" for the rest of 2013. During a recent Guardian interview with SCE CEO Andrew House, we learn that Sony doesn't expect to satisfy the current demand until maybe February:

"So I’d characterise it as being somewhat supply-challenged for the remainder of the calendar year, but hopefully we’ll be able to satisfy that pent-up demand as we get out to January and February."

Despite the lack of available systems, Sony still expects the PS4 to outsell the PS3 during the first fiscal year period (for the PS3, it was November 2006 – March 2007); Sony sold 3.5 million PS3 units during that time frame. They anticipate selling at least 5 million units during that same five-month window this time around. They also expect to have sold 3 million units by the end of 2013, which is only about 10 days away. At last check, they had sold 2.1 million worldwide; the PS4 is now available in 48 countries.

Think they can make it?

I think they will probably hit those numbers, if they don't it will be due to lack of availability in crucial areas.

Dumb of Sony to not meet target goals due to inability to supply demands. It's almost like trying to sell 10 ice cream cones, but you only have a supply of 5.

Ugh. Well, the momentum seems to be hitting a big bump and now a slowdown. This was one thing I worried about with Sony. BUT if people are smart (?) they will wait and get the better system.

The numbers means something, but if the demand is not met, competitors can seize the moment. I was in a Best Buy and I mother was wanting the PS4 for her son, who sounded like what he asked for he got, but the sales guy said they had none. So she was looking at the XboxOne which they did have a few, only a few. I walked away, but my hope would be that she did not settle. Mind you her son might have been one of those kids that would have gone in a tantrum if he did not get what he wanted.

Anyway, Sony needs to, within reason and rushing the manufacturing line, to get on top of things because when thing in North America go in to post Holiday mode, families start to watch their money.

Keep playing!

Yeah, Best Buy near me has plenty of Xbones in stock. PS4 is nonexistent. Not even Walmart or Target which I thought were getting restock from the 15th.

and holy crap. I went to best buy's site and did a local store search on the cheapest XO bundle, the one with Xbox Live. 7, yes, 7 of the 10 locations shows AVAILABLE NOW.
How about the PS4? nothing no where.

and just checked a completely different state, Utah, where I once lived, for Xbox One. ALL 10 locations show available now.

EDIT: So that's 17 out of 20 completely different store locations with XO availibility

While it's true they may not be able to keep up with demands they sure are doing a great job of at least keeping them coming. A local wal – mart had 60+ this past weekend.

and probably beyond then!
were not getting our shipment till late feb!
and theres still preorders backed up from before launch to fulfil then, so theres no way that will fill all existing preorders, preorders made between now and then, and pure walk ins.
makes you wonder why its taking them so long to produce the units, M$ has had multiple restocks since launch!
they even had another big restock this week just in time for chrissy.

Because MS is better.

X1 has never sold out everywhere.I seen them at all Target, Walmart and Best Buy.PS4 is selling faster than they can produce them.Walmart had a recent shipment that sold out in 15 minutes.X1 cannot be selling much when they are stacked in stock with no PS4 in stock at all.X1 should easily be sold out if that is all that's there so that either tells me that people are holding out for PS4 or the demand for X1 is lower than MS claim. It is not like Sony has not shipped any consoles since the launch.

Cmon Sony, you gotta at least try hard for Christmas in the U.S.

they are trying. there may be a certain manufacturing part or parts that are limiting the throughput of systems. This isn't uncommon when faced with this kind of demand.
Problem is, Sony may be sacrificing recaptured territory to MS because the XO is there and the PS4 ain't.
If the PS4 can't meet demand for another couple months and the XO has clearly been sufficiently supplied since a week after launch, or since launch, this doesn't bode well for Sony out of the starting gate, at least in the US.

there's always the other side of it, which it may very well be. It's not that Sony isn't producing them at an expected rate, it's the demand for the PS4 is so much higher, where the XO is already able to supply the weaker demand.

A lot of hoarders are buying up PS4s and Xbox Ones and marking them up on Kijiji. About 500+ ads for over-priced PS4s here in Ottawa alone. People are looking for $200-300 profit. It's been going on since November 15.
