Sony: Users Fully Embracing PS4’s Streaming Capabilities

If you've live-streamed content from your new PlayStation 4, you're not alone.

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) have announced that a huge number of PS4 owners have embraced the console's streaming capabilities:

There have been nearly 800,000 gameplay broadcasts and more than 7.1 million spectate sessions via video streaming platforms, Twitch and Ustream. All told, over 20 million minutes of live gameplay has been streamed from the PS4 already, and it has only been out since November 15 in the US and November 29 in Europe. Ten percent of all content on Twitch has come from PS4 systems, and Ustream has reported an average of 31 minutes of streaming per caster. Top streamed games include Killzone: Shadow Fall , Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts .

Said Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida in an official statement:

"PlayStation 4 is specifically designed so people can share their gaming experiences and interest in streaming live gameplay has surpassed our wildest expectations. We're very excited to see gamers embrace live streaming from their PS4 system and we look forward to seeing how PlayStation gamers advance social gaming in the coming years."

The PS4 was the most successful console launch in PlayStation history. Sony tallied over 2.1 million PS4 units globally, and many users continue to explore the new social-oriented features. The revolutionary Share button on the Dual Shock 4 controller is definitely getting pressed quite a bit.

I don't see why casual or hardcore gamers would not take advantage of this feature. I would definitely like to spectate my PSN buddies playing games that I am not sure if I should buy or not. The only thing that could grind my gears is to spectate gamers that just embarass themselves U_U.

Hmmmm, not a feature I care for, if anything it is just going to turn into something like Youtube just floods of garbage overloading the servers. I wouldnt mind having 1 or 2 fun videos saved which people can see when they go onto a profile but just releasing it onto the net with no structure sounds really horrible…

I still think the Wii-U has the best social aspects, its not to overbearing. Each game has a thread on the Nintendo system which you can make comments on and share photos. The community is really active and its really handy to talk and ask questions about titles. It's simplistic, accessible and nice.

It doesn't get released onto the Internet in the way your thinking. You can 1. Either stream the video. Or 2. Edit the video to make it smaller (quicker uploads) to Facebook or later possibly youtube, your hdd or create a simple screenshot. That's it. It's not like taking a video with your phone or camera. It's meant for streaming services really, however it let's people show off and "share" something in a smaller size.

In some ways it's also much like the way you explained the WiiU capabilities which I admit I know nothing about.

It's actually a great feature considering all the live streaming people were doing all last gen anyways.

WOW, that's a lot of wasted time.

I remember when Activision released the total number of hours played in COD. A friend of mine said to imagine if all that time was spent volunteering in our communities. In his words, "The world would change in a day."

He's probably right, but I still gotta get my relic+1 weapon.

Yeah that's the beauty of the share feature you don't have to use it. It literally takes seconds to edit a clip and it uploads in the background. So not much time is wasted getting it out there. That time considered being wasted is normal playtime from people.

Yeah it's amazing the things you can put into perspective. There are a lot of people helping in this world however I couldnt say whether or not its of the quantity being presented here.

Watching other people game, major tournaments, they're all a big part of gaming for me. It's fun to just kick back and see some skillful gameplay that never crossed your mind.

@Underdog15

That's quite powerful really… :/

Oh I'm with you on that, World!

I'm not sure I'm motivated enough to regularly upload videos though. I can maybe see using it with friends… maybe. But that's about it.

I think Sony has successfully found this generation's cool feature. Last generation, it was motion control. Not saying motion control was a GOOD feature necessarily, but it was what caught the attention of millions of people and launched the Wii into the stratosphere in terms of sales. I'm really interested to see if this catches on, or turns out to be just a flash in the pan. Either way, kudos to PS for predicting the next big thing. Can't wait to get my PS4.

I really don't care about the share capabilities. I don't want to see anybody playing instead of playing myself… and who might want to see me playing?

Just one thing happenned while playing PS4 that I wanted to keep and share: my wife punched me in the face and broke my glasses while we were fooling around with The Playroom.Too bad I remebered the autorecording feature once we stopped playing and it was gone.

I think share features really benefit from a game like GTA

When I get a PS4 i'd love to use the streaming capabilities but sadly I won't be able to use them due to having a slow connection speed and that's all i'm able to get.

Connection speed is 1.5 mbps if you're wondering with a .5 upload
