Shooters Dominate PS4 Launch Sales: Aren’t We Bored Yet?

It's not like anyone is really surprised, but is this just another example of an industry that has long since gone depressingly mainstream?

I mean, you can always satisfy the masses with the most repetitive, boring garbage on the planet. Just keep giving 'em the same ol' same ol' and they'll continue to lap it up at an alarming rate. And I don't mean to say the three shooters in question are bad games, because they're not. What I'm saying is that they are all shooters and it's disheartening that the three biggest games for a new system launch – especially a new PlayStation – are all FPSs.

Sony fans have razzed Microsoft for really only putting out a bunch of shooters and action games for the Xbox platform, but at least the Xbox One has Ryse: Son of Rome , Dead Rising 3 and Forza 5 . Even so, it's very likely that Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 will be the top two launch titles for the new Xbox as well. Hell, even Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag , a multiplatform title, didn't manage to outstrip Killzone: Shadow Fall – an exclusive production – during the PS4 launch.

I'm not against shooters; in fact, I really like them. I play just about every one that's ever made and although I can't stand multiplayer, I still enjoy my time with a solid, entertaining FPS. But as we enter a new generation, can we please at least attempt to expand on that age-old formula? Despite its flaws, Shadow Fall tried some new things, which is a step in the right direction, but there's still a long way to go. Maybe something like Destiny will help to rejuvenate the genre, even if it'll bring it in a disagreeable direction in my eyes (i.e., the MMO direction).

I just wish we had seen more diversity at the start of a new PlayStation era, that's all. I'm sure we'll see it in due time.

Perhaps the top selling titles might have looked different had Infamous, Drive Club and/or Watchdogs been ready for launch.

I know some people (like me) are waiting for a good system seller that is not an exclusive shooter to jump on the PS4 bandwagon. I'm looking forward to many games on PS4 – and hopefully I'll see a bundle in the future that makes me pull the trigger!

In the mean time, still loving my PS3! Black Flag will keep me busy for a good long time – after that maybe Arkham Origins. The backlog of great PS3 games is staggering……

While I disagree hat Drive Club would have changed the top 3 (although that was the only game I wanted for the launch hence the fact I bought nothing with my PS4) I can see Infamous shaking things up and Watch Dogs will definitely post enough sales to enter the top 3. EA threw NFS Rivals out there when they saw the Crew and Drive Club would miss the launch but as much as I know I would play it, it just looks too much like Hot Pursuit to me. I want a new gaming experience for my new game system.

Shooters are big sellers; probably the single biggest selling genre of the last decade. You can't fault developers and publishers for going with the single closest thing to a sure bet in the industry. I'd like to see more RPGs or games like Fallout 3 and Dragon Age that incorporate those elements into different types of games but I don't mind shooters in and of themselves if they're done well.

Well they are easier to make and have ready. I think the reason this rollout is so disappointing is that they had EXTRA time due to the length of this last generation to make the launch a massive software success. And they coughed up two games.

If Sony had launched a flagship RPG it would have killed. People don't like waiting 4 years to get a good RPG.

I think that the Unreal engine is a big factor here. The fact that developers have such a powerful and easy to use tool available makes a huge difference.

@Kryten;
None of those shooters are built on Unreal… If that's what you meant.

@World;
I would really love to see Sony make a good RPG for the PS4. A production with the budget of an exclusive. Man that'd be interesting to see.

Microsoft has a handful of 1st party studios and they have Fable, Sony has 22 studios (I think) and NO RPGs!

Beam,
I wasn't referring necessarily to those two games. I was just pointing out that Unreal and it's ease of use is a factor in the dominance of shooters. It's been used for both Borderlands games, all three installments of the Mass Effect series and all three Bioshocks among a multitude of others. It's been used for other genres of course, but it's really well-suited to shooters.

Ah gotcha, Kryten. Yeah those engines are typically well suited for shooters. But the reason for that is because shooters are so popular. So it becomes a bit like a question of what came first, the hen or the egg. 🙂

@World;
Yeah I know, right? I find it puzzling.

I just wish japanese support didn't suck these days. It's their offerings that need to be there to balance out this shooter-fest of a gaming library.

EDIT: Where's my Ridge Racer, Onimusha, FF, 5 more of Platinum Games-like devs, a quality Sonic platformer, FIGHTING GAMES, Shinobi, Heck, Dynasty Warriors or something Samurai'ish? it's like they're all absent.
AND SHEN-freeking-MUE!

and a DMC that looks and feels like a DMC for crying out loud….

and another ZOE please. Heck, where's a new Dark Cloud?
I'd even take a quality sequel to Crazy Taxi.

EDIT: Do the japanese even make 'open world' games?

no it didn't. no DMC made from Japan would even think about using the clunky UE3 and 30fps. never. and lets not even talk about the art aesthetics.

biggest disappointing fact of the ps4s launch.
you could deal with the fact that theres only two first party titles from the company who owns the biggest first party library in the industry!
you could forgive that fact if they were really good games, and something unique and different.
but sadly there not, there mediocre games at best and games which pretty much define the been there done that term.

wheres the action game?
the RPG?
the adventure game?
such a shame that games like CLoS 2, south park the stick of truth, dark souls 2, are all last gen titles.
well, last gen in 3 days for me but still.
its a shame and a waste that we have to start this generation on the stigma which has haunted last gen.
one thing that i was really worried about, and still am, are we finally going to see developers step up to the plate and explore new experiences?
what is next gen?
or are we just going to see more oooooooooo look at the peeeeeeerty fireball like the ps3 generations been.
allot of people are saying this gen will be the final successor to the ps2 generation, but to be honest i really cant see that happening.
to see the ps2 greats return would be oh so bitter sweet.

hell, just give me syphon filter and ill be happy!
oh, and i cant not talk about the recent amazon listing for crash bandicoot as a ps4 exclusive, and yesterdays rumor that its being worked on by ND and SSM.
i know, i know, when pigs fly.
but what IF?
weve been dreaming of the day that spyro, J&D, ape escape and crash bandicoot came back, dreaming for so long we dont know what we would do if it actually happened!

Hmmm… Two of those are *giants* though, and the third is the prime exclusive title with very little competition. No one should be surprised they topped the list.

Had there been something from BioWare available at launch, or Fallout 4 or Skyrim 2 or Infamous 3, not to mention if GTA5 had been a launch title (or if the shooters at launch were *not* those three giants) that chart might have looked mighty different.

But yeah – shooters *are* big amongst gamers. That's just how it is.

The last shoorer that I purchased was Resistance 3. Right now I'm enjoying roaming the lands of Skyrim and acting up on the streets of Los Santos. These two games will keep me busy until Gran Turismo 6 and Castlevania. I guess I'm one of the few.

Given the average to low reviews for these launch games I would say it was smart to not have Drive Club or Second Son launch with the console. Why bother putting those games out if they will be poorly received? It's smart business and games like COD and Battlefield would still get all the sales. No RPG will compete and it would be a waste to release the game when it won't get the attention it deserves. The consoles themselves are what gets all of the hype anyway. Sony played it smart especially with DC.

Why wouldn't an RPG compete?

Welcome to America.

Shooters remain huge sellers in North America; though I think it's starting to wane somewhat. As long as kids think these games are what Megan Fox plays, they will buy 'em up. I just don't care for them as they are lacking originality. I feel Destiny can change that, though.

Still haven't bought a retail game yet. I'd purchase Knack or Black Flag over a FPS.

A couple of reasons, I believe, is that it's all action and that it doesnt tie you down for any period of time.

Action movies have always been wildly popular and gaming is just an extension of watchable media. So it would be safe to assume that action games will also be really popular.

The fact that it doesnt tie you down by having to play long chapters or remember a long story helps as well. Today with people craming more stuff into their days, and with gamers getting older and having families, means less gaming time. Being able to log on for 10-15 mins at a time without having to get involved in anything heavy helps sell FPS.

I think it's simply serving the lowest common denominator. shooters require very little brain activity and when you are selling anything new (and shiny) like a game console you want pretty pictures. What's prettier than explosions? If Skyrim would have been a launch game it would also have gotten trounced by CoD and BF. Skyrim sold to me (and my friends) thru word of mouth and reviews. I had never played the Elder Scrolls series before but the first weekend I put in 28 hours…and I had to work both days.

I also prefer to rank only games that do not have a number after them and are exclusive to that gen as true launch titles. But that's just me…

I bought Killzone with my PS4, but had I known that two free shooters were available (Warframe, Blacklight: Retribution) I probably would have gone with Need For Speed.

I was amped for Watch Dogs. When that fell through, I was still really excited for Driveclub. Both of the launch titles that I was excited for fell through, so I went with the first party game that looked like it would appeal most to me. Killzone hasn't disappointed, but I wouldn't have bought it day 1 if I had Watch Dogs as an option.

At least with KZ your money went to a Sony studio instead of Ubisoft who would have used it to make more Assassin's Creed games.

I wanted to get a variety with my PS4 so I preordered Knack and BF4 with it. Then have Driveclub through PS+ to have a racer. I thought that would have started me off well.

Think I may have to get GT6 for the PS3 to keep me going for now instead.

As a shooter fan I have to say I'm loving PS4 right now. Destiny and The Order 1886 pre ordered for my next round of shots fired.

Hell even Infamous involves shooting – all be it lightning bolts …

I can see the shooting genre going from strength to strength – its where the numbers are so that's what developers will focus on.
