PS4 Red Line Of Death Reports Spread

The PlayStation 4 isn't having the smoothest launch in terms of reliability.

After initial problems supposedly related to the HDMI port (later confirmed as being a system issue that might be easily fixed), rumors of the "Red Line of Death" have started cropping up around the Internet.

They're a little more than rumors now, though, as evidenced by this report at VGN . Multiple users in various communities and forums are saying their PlayStation 4 systems are essentially dead, and they're seeing a red light on the system. A few months ago, there was talk about the PS4 overheating and giving users that red light, so perhaps some people are simply playing too long. But other problems have been encountered, such as a "grinding" Blu-Ray drive.

Combine this with the fact that the PlayStation Network remains down, and Sony might want to move fast to reassure consumers.

Ack! Doom and gloom! After glancing at a video I'm reasonably certain some people are destroying their consoles on purpose in order to put up the video of their red line to get hits on N4G.

Seen a video of a dude walk out of the store with one, set it on the ground (while in the new box) and start hitting it with a baseball bat. Not sure why but whatever.

Im not sure how this thing can overheat though, its super quiet, has enouvh air flow availability and literally uses no power. It doesnt even have a ground for the power cord.

exactly World. If the site can't get metacritic representation it's gutter trash. VGN is who now?

"My name is Jeremy, but most gamer’s probably know me better as The Red Dragon." -VGN

Aww here's an introduction from the VGN guy who runs the show. How cute Jeremy. I'm a gamer. And I don't know you Mr Red Dragon. How professional 😉

Bigrailer,
There were similar videos back in 2006 after the PS3 launch. It's just Microsoft fanboy posturing. Fanboyism in general is stupid, but spending hundreds of dollars on a console only to immediately destroy it is certifiable behavior.

bigrailer, the PS4 actually does get alarmingly warm to the touch, no matter how well ventilated the thing is.
It's quite shocking, actually. I'm scared that my PS4 will break down, given the heat.

Still working as of now, but I just thought I'd point out that it isn't as 'cool' as most people make it out to be.

My PC and PS3 get pretty toasty, too. Even if it's warm, so long as the peak temp isn't so high it damages things, I'm happy.

You hit the nail on the head there.

I believe a lot of the bad news is XBox fans talking trash and making it look bad.

This is the sad result of the console wars being worse then they ever have been.

This is going to continue for a while I can tell. However, if this red line has to do with overheating the manual plainly says shut the machine off. Im sure people are continually resetting and starting it up again causing failures. The red line is a warning, cant fix stupid.

I guess over heating isn't a surprise when you beef up a machine. My Vaio I bought for gaming gets really hot when simply using it for simple tasks. I stopped playing games on it because it got even hotter while playing. I miss the good old days when consoles get get so hot.

bigrailer19

Yeah my PS4 isnt getting hot though, so im confused by all this. Its gotta be just like the PS3 where people finally realized they couldnt put it in a closed space, on carpet, or in small spaces. I would assume thats the only reason these things heat up.

I never smother my consoles. I'm so paranoid I move them back and forth from basement to the bedroom when seasons change. Speaking of console failure worries, my slim PS3 sounds like it's going to take a dumb. The disc drive is way too loud. Hope I don't have to replace it.

Yeah my PS3 and now PS4 are well taken care of. Sounds like we have similar priorities.

Is it the new slim model or the first slim models?

Jawknee
Jawknee

The first slim model. It failed on me once already but it was the power supply and was easily fixable. Was able to fix it at a local shop for $40. If it's the disc drive this time, it's going to be a bigger problem.

If its getting louder when accessing the disk you can clean the interior and blu ray Len using rubbing alcohol on the end of a swab. If the pro Lem persists you only need a new laser. It'll run u about 25 bucks with shipping or $80 to $100 at a shop. Good luck

Wow, I expect some issues with some users and likely software issues like Wii U had, something easily fixed with an update but what I don't expect is having a broken console out of the box. Never happened to me, I hope it never happens. Definitely waiting to get a PS4 until these issues are sorted out.

I dont think its actually happening frequently. The idea that ita happening at all though is a little disheartening. So far im trouble free but it makes me want to purchase a 2 year warranty for sure.

Jawknee

I don't recall this happening with the PS3 launch. The failures didn't come until much later.

There were a few video card failures for launch PS3's out of the box. I saw a video where buddy started Resistance and the picture had lines and was a bit scrambled.

Akuma_

There was a 6% out of the box failure rate for the PS3.

Errr…is it really two years? If so then that's better than any other warranty for every other electronic ever. A two year warranty is nothing to complain about.

Depends on where in the world he lives. We got two years here in Norway too, or even five is the product is meant to last significantly longer than that.

Either way I just noticed you can purchase a 36 month warranty from the PSN for $49.99 or $59.99 (not sure the coverage except that one is accidental the other non). Thay is cheap considering what I paid for my ps3 warranty.

I am going on record here saying that these reports are all related to XBOTS buying the system's and causing mass hysteria. I have had 0 problems and have played since 6:00 PM Eastern time yesterday (have not slept) however i do have it in an area that's well ventilated. Hopefully this doesn't affect some from purchasing, as i do believe it to be a marketing campaign by Microsoft! They like to cheat!!!!!

I was updating mine and because the network was down I got a red line mid update. I simply hard reset it and it went into safe mode and I just didn't update again.

I think these people also might not know how to do simple things like this.

Jawknee
Jawknee

You can download the update from Sony's site to a thumb drive and update it that way. I bet this is the problem. The network went down while people were trying to update.

I didnt even realise the network was down. I updated mine about an hour and a half ago and no issues. Is the PSN still down? When did this happen?

Yeah, I just waited until today and everything seemed to be fine.

Network is up and I'm playing some Warframe 🙂

Xenris-

Killzone is epic. So far the story is decent but the gameplay is unreal. The guns are sweet and yeah it actually has some freedom to it. And its beautiful.

The mp, so far is definitely up there as GG bes productions. Its balanced very well and you get the classic feel of KZ2 on top of the fun amd addoctive gameplay with well constructed maps. I also tried out Resogun. That game is an addicting little number. Man its fun. And looks great!

Fired up my system for the first time on Friday around 5:30-6:00pm (Eastern Std Time) and had no problems at all with the update. It seemed to do it as fast as my internet connection allowed it.

Bigrailer does KZ multiplayer and SP in general feel more like KZ2 than KZ3? Or is MP more weighted and SP more floaty like CoD?

I will probably pick KZ up eventually but money is tight right now so I'm going to wait for that and Knack to get price drops.

I played warframe on the PC and I am really enjoying it on the PS4 it feels really god on the controller. For a free game its loads of fun you should check it out.

bigrailer19

Xenris- both feel weightier than KZ3, I think the sp feels a little less weighted though only to accomplish whats being done. Like in the stealth portions of the game needing to take down two enemies at once isnt uncommon and a weighted feeling might hinder that. However if anything its a miniscule difference.

Brother in law's PS4 is DoA, won't even boot so it isn't a failed update. Not a "red line of death", though. Throbbing blue line that never ends. Unfortunately, Amazon is saying it could be quite some time before he can get a replacement.

Mine seems to work like a charm and AC4 is looking pretty good.

My PS4 has run nonstop for over eight hours. Not a single issue yet, aside from PSN issues. But that has nothing to do with the console.

Temjin001

you'd think after the whole rrod fiasco no manufacturer would release a console that would even show a red shape of any kind during a system failure. just for the simple fact of knowing that it'd turn into an internet trigger phrase in no time flat.
It should be more like how PC motherboards do it. where it makes like Morse code beeps at you. Where you're left wondering, "don't know what those beeps mean, but it can't be good."
And crap. that can't work because it would just be known as the Beeps of Death.
Okay, fine. The console should just laugh at you "Haha sucks to be you because I just died!"
yes, that would work =p

This is a great read, not from N4G, the negative mongers where Ben hangs out =p, that we should all read. This is great. It's hilarious too and there are some events here I didn't know that happened. Woo Hoo! Sony rules!

Dude: N4G is not a news source. It just takes from other sources. I don't "hang out" anywhere; I look at all the articles posted about next-gen. It really isn't my fault that for the past 24 hours 3 or 4 out of the top 5 most popular stories from ALL sources were about the PS4's possible reliability issues.

calm down there Ben. i'm teasing 😉
don't worry, I sometimes look at the most "popular" reviews as well for games. you know the always reliable 'user reviews'
