Sony: “Mixed” Game Reviews Won’t Hurt The PS4 Launch

The review scores aren't exactly off the charts, but Sony isn't really worried at all.

After exclusive PlayStation 4 launch titles such as Killzone: Shadow Fall and Knack earned lower-than-anticipated scores, Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida told GamesIndustry.biz that the response is admittedly "disappointing," but he doesn't believe it'll have a negative effect on the system's release.

" Yeah, it's disappointing to see some of the low scores. I haven't spent enough time reading reviews, but I would characterize them as mixed. "

Yoshida thinks that certain factors could've impacted those scores, such as online functionality only recently becoming available. He also made an interesting comment about the demanding schedule critics are facing with the launch of a new system; it sort of implies that reviewers are rushing to complete each analysis. As for the games themselves, Yoshida is having fun with them and he thinks you will, too:

" I've played through all of our games, Killzone, Knack and Resogun, and I totally enjoyed playing through these games. I'm now on my second run of Knack and Resogun at a higher difficulty–these games really grow on you when you play more. I'm very confident that once you purchase these games and play, you'll be happy that you've done so. "

Shadow Fall is currently averaging about a mid-7 while Knack is in the high 5s. Other "lesser" games are actually faring better, as Resogun has many 8+ scores, for example. It's just unfortunate when the exclusive high-profile stuff only receives average scores, you know?

I think some of the review scores so far are expected. 59 average for Knack was expected, even Sony said they were aiming for 70-80.

Killzone im not worried about. Its score is right there with BF and CoD. However Knack im a little dissapointed in the scores its getting. Ieam the lead architect of the PS4 os directing the game. It should have been called the best looking launch game at least and its not, its being regarded as nothing special.

I got an email from amazon for a buy one get one promotion and I chose Knack on a whim, but really to have something different among the shooters. But thought it would be special. Ill leave that special part to when I play it, but ot appears I may have jumped the gun in my expectations. I wanted to get a game I otherwise normally wouldnt buy like Knack, because I have no problem buying CoD or BF3. Now im wondering if I should have got Lego Marvel Super Heroes because it atleast is recieveing good marks and it would have fallen into my "differential" choice. Damn!

It never looked special to me, looked like a kids PS3 game.

It looked like a solid platformer remenescent of crash, ratchet or jak. Also somethibg my wife and I could play. She apparently isnt interested, amd meother are the reviewers.

I guess more than anything is I had high hopes in the regard that Cerny developed it. I meam as the lead architect for the console you would think anything he touched would be gold. Meh, at least I didnt pay for it.

This is clearly happening because critics are expecting some immediate and massive gameplay shift that just doesn't happen. The reviews all say how magically old fashioned everything is, even in the case of Killzone which does do new combinations of things.

Im thinking in KZ and the other FPS cases, the appeal is slowing down. Starting to end. Not that they are bad games but feel redone. Unfortunate.

The ONLY ground-breaking, game-changing launch game I can think of, and I mean ever, is Super Mario 64. There was simply nothing like it at the time, and it was available day and date with N64. Why do some people think games like that are always, or often, available at launch? It's literally happened exactly once in the history of gaming.

well, at the least, KZ and Infamous really show a nice leap in graphics over all the other cross-gen stuff out there. They show what the standard can eventually look like.

I totally expected the reception that Knack has received. Initially, I was pumped for it, but playing it killed my enthusiasm, so… It could have been the next Jak or Ratchet, but it just didn't do much.

Killzone, on the other hand, I'm surprised by. Reviewers are praising the open-endedness and saying how admirable it is for Guerilla to offer a fundamental rethink of their series, saying that the controls are sublime and, from what I've read, not really justifying their lower scores. I don't know.

In any case, it's kinda got me thinking that we're going to see much the same sort of cr*p we did early on in this generation where there seemed to be a widespread bias against PS3 exclusives. I mean… what's the bet that Ryse ends up with an unjustifiable 8-9/10 average?

Yeah if Killzone is getting bad scores for doing these new things then people will assume they have to stop experimenting and go back to what works.

Killzone Shadow Fall $45 w/free shipping via Newegg, I think I can agree with that price for an FPS.

Im still getting knack as my first PS4 game. I read a bunch of reviews and the complaints seem silly to me.

I mean to me it seems a little harsh. Gameinformers review seemed to be in line with how I would appreciate the game. Also Knack on hard is apparently really hard which sounds awesome to me.

Killzone I will get with a price drop because I am sick of FPS games that aren't doing anything knew, and I wont be getting PS+ for a while.

I dont think these reviews will hurt the PS4s launch. I mean it might affect things if ALL of the Xbone launch exclusives are amazing but still its only going to be a minor factor and people with some smarts will get either both or the PS4 because of the nonsense microsoft tried to pull earlier this year.

Xenris – I got Knack, I was really excited for it. After reading the reviews im not sure what to think ubtil I play it.

I havnt played KZ yet either but it apparently has done a lot of new things like its sandbox esque campaign missions, and use of touch pad among others. Ill be playing it first especially with it having mp.

Let me know what you think. I played the demo of Knack and I liked the old school feel of it.

I would put it in the hardest mode and have at it. I actually opted to not get any games right now, I have to wait until next payday which is soon.

Then I will pick KZ or Knack 🙂

It seems the reviewerswere expecting something other than an old school type platformer. Most of the user reviews say its reminiscent of crash or ratchet. Soubds like an instant winner to me.

I had thought bad reviews would come out for Ps4, those critics are trying to hype up the x1 because it's needs all the help it can get at 720. Played Nba2K14 with my bro Knicks vs. Rockets and everyone moves the way there suppose to, it's freak'n awesome!!! Ps4 is awesome! True 1080! Simple as that.
