Sony: No, PlayStation 4 Will Not Suffer A New Game Drought

The software drought that often follows a new hardware launch is common. In fact, it's expected these days.

But despite a relatively unimpressive list of titles scheduled for the first quarter of 2014, Sony swears that there will be no drought for the PlayStation 4. In speaking to Kotaku , Sony boss Adam Boyes says there are plenty of games coming in the next three or four months. We just don't have the exact dates yet.

"I think we've got a lot of stuff that's gonna be coming out sort of on a more regular cadence than the competition, because we've got a lot of great, phenomenal indie games. I think also what you're gonna see is a lot of updates to the free-to-play games as they come online. We've got Warframe; we've got Blacklight: Retribution; we've got DC Universe Online. Then we've got Warthunder coming. And all those games I think we'll be continually adding and evolving the content that's available on them. And then once some of the other indie games start coming online, once they start releasing, we'll see a nice cadence."

Boyes said that we know about the games that are scheduled to launch before the end of the year, but there are still unannounced titles that will fall between January and March. That's when we'll start seeing the games hit at a "nice, regular beat." He added that "every few weeks, there will be new stuff to be playing on PS4." Boyes and his team also continue to fight to nab exclusive content for PlayStation platforms, which is good news for Sony followers. Love those extra bonuses!

As for exclusive titles we are aware of, there's inFamous: Second Son , which is tentatively set for February, and The Order: 1886 , the new project from Sony's Ready at Dawn studio. That might not be out until later in 2014, so here's hoping there are indeed many more games slated for Q1 2014.

Yeah but here's the thing, those lame games aren't worth buying the console for. We want big titles in 2014, things that show off the new juice.

they're saying "there won't be any drought" where clearly there'll be a drought for most anyone who could be considered a core PS gamer. It's hilarious. I suppose we should be getting excited for DC Universe and 'free to play' games.

but I don't know why I'm complaining. I've become an old school grumpy gamer who only likes the crap I grew up with, or the crap from today that is a lot like the crap from that time. It's like I've settled down and got married to those games and I just don't care to go adventuring out anymore.

It's nice having multiple consoles. While I wait for the big PS4 games to roll in I'll be playing Mario 3D Land, Donkey Kong, Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8. XD

I wouldn't play those games if I had em Jawknee 🙂

I did play some Mario 2 and Mario 64 the other day though 🙂

World is right. While I appreciate an indie game now and then, I bought my PS4 for KZ, inFamous, The Order, Thief, Watch Dogs, God of War, Uncharted/TLoU, AC, etc. Big titles. I'm still getting the PS4, obviously, but I hope I can USE it beyond just KZ and Resogun before February.

Well, if not, I'll just finish ICO and replay TLoU or Fallout 3, I guess. lol

Really no need to sh!t on Indie games. They may not be the prettiest or longest games but some offer unique experiences, and may be even better than some of those big budget blockbusters. While they may not be worth getting a console for as big name games some are worthwhile if you just give them a chance.

Doesn't matter how good they are, it's not what gamers want to jump into on the release of a new hardware generation. It is not synonymous with awesomeness.

It s not that i don t care or enjoy them , it s that i m not buying a new console for them .

So the ps4 is still gonna have a game Drought for me until Second son .

Unless Deep down is somehow released before then .

I can understand for the people getting a system at or very near launch, who are eager for the new blockbuster games for their particular system/platform. I've still got plenty left I haven't even played through once yet, nor some I haven't even added to my PS3 library, so I've got plenty to tide me over until I'm ready to bring that baby home.

Hopefully the launch goes smoothly without a hiccup and game development for upcoming games go well to be able to release within a reasonable window of time. I also hope though the ones who aren't quite satiated with the PS4 offerings have enough backlog PS3 games or already played PS3 games to replay. 🙂

I really hope we can get at least Drive Club, inFamous and Destiny before June. Thief is a game I'm looking forward to and I think that's also set for the early part of the year and I like MLB The Show. Five games along with the indie and F2P stuff wouldn't be terrible, but this indie push is starting to bother me a bit. It's like when people praised Sony for giving indie developers a chance in the spotlight at E3 they took it as 'oh, that's really what our consumers want.' And that's not the case at all. Nothing wrong with indie games, I like many, but they don't stand up to the best full retail, 'blockbusters' that a company such as Naughty Dog or Rockstar is capable of putting out. And they certainly don't move consoles off store shelves.

My PS3 collected dust until MGS4 was released. It was smooth saling from there. Maybe this gen will be different. What comes out first? inFamous or MGS5?

I just had Folklore and the free Motorstorm (which I never played) for like 2 years.

Note: Ready at Dawn isn't actually affiliated with Sony. Just wanted to mention that.

Depends on what you term a drought and what you're looking forward to, really. There's inFamous, DriveClub and Thief before the end of March, but nothing else big that's been confirmed from then onwards. Some people will be happy with the indie games, and more will be happy with the multiplatform titles, but Sony really needs to pull the sheets of a couple more must-have exclusives for the system if they want to keep people's excitement up. They can't just keep putting The Order and F2P games out there as proof of what they have to offer this time around, not with Microsoft showcasing Sunset Overdrive, D4, Titanfall and Quantum Break. There may be some time before those are released, but at least we know that they're coming and that they're worth getting excited about.
