Will Hardcore Gamers Keep Purchasing Multiple Consoles?

For the most part, if you consider yourself a legitimate hardcore gamer and you love video games, you should probably own more than one console in any given generation.

Nintendo just lost me some time back, so they've been out of the equation since the N64 days. But I got the Dreamcast when I had the PlayStation, and I had the PS2 and Xbox and currently use the PS3/360 combo. Granted, I have always used the PlayStation systems far more often, but that's simply because Sony has excelled in the realm of exclusive software. It also helped that most all RPGs I wanted were on the first two PlayStation machines.

But will the hardcore group continue this approach in the new generation? Will most of those who label themselves "avid gamers" own both the PS4 and Xbox 720? I suppose many will get the Wii U and pick up either the PS4 or 720 at some point. That being said, if the new systems are pretty expensive and you find your available time dwindling, won't you just have to pick a side and go with it? Or are you just convinced that there will be exclusive titles for all available consoles that you'll just have to play? There's the argument that multiplatform efforts are better on one or the other machine but that debate typically dwindles as a generation wears on.

So what are your plans when the new era rolls around? Will you maintain the multiple console approach? Or are you thinking you'll just pick a horse and stick with it, as you spend most of your time with one or the other platform, anyway?

Its more fun to pick sides. Team Sony!

Halo is great though. It's better to be on both sides.

If there is gona be sides, It would be much better for Halo to stay on the Xbox. Exclusives are good.

I'll stick with Sony for sure, but if other consoles have enough must-have games, I'll get them too.

when I have money throw away, it is most likely at another console. ps3 is my primary console, I've had a wii…mostly played mario land 3 on there lol…and I had 360…mainly because tekken 6 on ps3 was starting to bore me lol but saw alot more grabbing on 360…grabbing no countering… Yea so most likely i'll get wii u next year.

I havnt needed to own multiple consoles ever. Especially since the PS1. Ive gotten all the games I really wanted to play so…

With that said Im fairly certain I'll own just a Sony console. Not because I'm
A fan boy but let's be honest. We all know where the majority of first part exclusives are. And I can play any third party game all the same so…

As long as Sony and Nintendo continue to make exclusives of course I'll invest in both consoles/handhelds.

Pretty much my variety of consoles as well. Scrapping Microsoft this gen and sticking with Sony and Nintendo consoles and handhelds.

I didn't get a 360 because of the shoddy hardware, and now even before 720 comes off the assembly line we have news that the majority of the processors are duds. That doesn't bode well for the final product so I'll just stick with Sony as it is always quality hardware.

The best reason to own an xbox is the games are cheaper because MS pays to overship them so there are always too many out there. I'm just hoping PS4 doesn't get the short end of the stick on multiplats again.

XBox cheaper? really. Did not know that (I'm UK based).

On topic: As usual my choice will always be Sony first. Most of my game-play has been on the PS3; I only got the XBOX for GeOW saga and Mass Effect and now the first Mass Effect is coming out for the PS. Gr8.

If the PS4 gets the short end on multiplats this gamer is going to explode!!! That is something I am just fed up with.Playing the inferior version on the superior system is whack. The VAST majority of games are multiplat titles and lets face it Sony fans got the shaft early on bad and it still continue to this day(although to a lesser degree). I would like to able to play a Bethesda game that works on a Sony platform someday!!

The games retail on day 1 at the same price of course, but if you price match new versions of the games a couple months later on ebay or amazon or glyde the 360 version is always cheaper. And if you have a bargain bin nearby it's always 90% 360 games.

I've been extremely happy with only a PS3 and definitely plan to get the next Playstation. That's a definite must. If the other consoles have anything worthwhile then I may pick one or both of them up too, but they are going to have to bring it. Only one game that I want just isn't enough to justify the price of the console for me, although one day I would still really like to play Lost Odyssey.

When it comes to nintendo, i refuse to buy another console from them till its called "Gamecube 2" Did not like the wii and i do not like the lame controller for the wii u. The zombie U looks awesome, but its not nearly enough to convince me to buy the..wii u… As for the new xbox, i dont mind the xbox i really dont but i do have something against MS and i refuse to hand out my monies for them to take and bribe more people.

Im a gamer, but i also see video games as a source of someones story coming to life in an interactive way. Sony delivers that better than any other company so i really don't have a need for any other console.

In what ways Jawknee?

If the Wii U ever gets cheap, I'm going to consider buying it. Main reason (other than offline co-op without worrying about split-screen) is because I want to have a lot of the N64 classics, as well as some SNES classics like Donkey Kong. I'm a big DK fan, but it's a shame Nintendo only really cares about Mario and Zelda. And no, a side scrolling DKC Returns doesn't count. I just want to see another 3D adventure from Donkey Kong and even Banjo. *sigh* the good old Rare days.

C'mon Highlander. That's silly anogolgy and you know it. You just admitted you hate the console before even giving it a chance. Nothing wrong with enjoying more than just Sony consoles. Nintendo has just as much to offer to those who are willing to get over their bias and give them a chance.

Daus, it turns your TV into an HD DS. Having a second screen opens up many gameplay possibilities for multilayer. It allows you have have all your mini maps and menus on the controller instead of the TV screen. The graphics are pretty. Never seen Mario look so crisp and colorful before. Being able to point the Wii U game pad at the TV screen like its your sniper scope in full panorama was quite cool as well. There's a lot that can be done with it and I imaging that Nintendo will take full advantage of it before long.

Nothing wrong with enjoying more than just Sony consoles. Nintendo has just as much to offer to those who are willing to get over their bias and give them a chance.

No one is impressed by what they have not yet tried. It's more than a souped-up Wii but you wouldn't know that since your bias stops you from even giving it a fair shake.

My bias? My bias didn't stop me from trying to find out about the hardware inside the thing. It's not like I need to do a lot of in depth investigation to figure out what games will be on it – Mario, Zelda, DK, Metroid,…

What is there to try? I don't like the standard Nintendo game franchises, and I think that Nintendo stopped really putting out world class hardware with the N64. The Wii was a great idea, an affordable game system with a motion capture gimmick so simple that parents and grand parents could make it work. But I'm a gamer, and that doesn't impress me. Nothing about the WiiU impresses me. the controller looks like a lump of white plastic with a screen embedded in it, it could have been designed by the folks behind the LeapFrog educational toys, it's not a device aimed at me, the gamer. It's not even any use without the WiiU console. When it came to the 3DS, Nintendo didn't even consider a second joystick, they were too busy playing with parallax lenses, and had to rush out a botch to add one.

Sorry, but Nintendo doesn't interest me either from the point of view of games or hardware, they never have. the closes they've come in 20 years was the Star Wars games on the N64.

Oooooooh, I see now. You're a real gamer. So those of us who like what Nintendo has to offer aren't. Gotcha. I'm glad to know that that's the standard for being a true gamer. That about right? Only those who worship Sony can be true gamers. Yea, No.Bias.At.All.

Lol, you know for a grown man you sure like to make childish arguments. "I'm a real gamer, because I hate Nintendo, drrrr"

Grow up.

Did you read anything I wrote, or are you just going to dismiss me with "grow up"?

Yes, I think Nintendo focuses on kids and their parents and grand parents to the exclusion of core gamers. Do I think that means that anyone that likes those games are childish? No, of course not, otherwise liking games like R&C would be just as childish.

Other than that WiiU remains technologically unimpressive, the tablet controller is feature poor and relatively expensive to make. Given the price constraints that Nintendo works to, that means that the rest of the console is little more than an evolution of the Wii itself to support HD resolution. Not exactly a revolutionary device eh?

Funny though that you tell me to 'grow up' when people have been telling Nintendo to 'grow up' and go beyond their tired old franchises for years and years now. Nintendo has steadfastly refused to do so.

Yes I read your points and I've heard it all before. I apologized for being rudely dismissive before. It just gets old man. You don't seem to like anyone tech company outside your android phone and Sony. You hate, Apple, you hate MS, you hate Nintendo, and you go to extremes like comparing them to an illness. Why can't shouldn't I come to the conclusion that you old an extreme bias?

TheHighlander

I'd have a far more positive view on Nintendo if they would break free from their ancient franchises. Though I still have my doubts about their technology. Apple I dislike (and always have) because they overcharge and under deliver and everyone loves them for it. It's a triumph of style over function in my opinion. Microsoft I learned to dislike over two decades working with them and their products in various capacities. I find them to be extremely predatory and a destructive influence in the video games market. Android is an open platform, I happen to love Motorola phones because they are so solid, and always have been as far back as my first Startac phone.

I wasn't aware that the use of exaggerated comparisons was evidence of hatred.

All I expect and want from Wii U are quality Mario, Zelda, and Metroid titles, including also an occasional offshoot, maybe Pikmin. I also feel some excitement regarding nintendo's Monolith aquisition, so I'm sure something great will come by way of Xeno-RPG's and jRPG's, like Dragon Warrior, in general. And of course there's those curious surprises like Bayonetta 2 and NG3 Razor's Edge (better come to PS3 in some shape of form)

oh, and concerning what World said, Jawknee. Do you also hang out at like a NESextreme site where you guys talk Nintendo, and it's all inverted from PSXe. There's a moderator named Dan D. who misses the days of top down adventures and thinks Zelda is a masterpiece. Or a guy named WorldEndsWithYou who loves playing crappy games from used bins? or a cranky dude who hates Sony's business practices and thinks half the stuff Sony produces are murder simulators that feed our degenerative youth, to line their pockets through unethical entertainment?

You know, like Twilight Zone stuff =p

With the consoles going closer together apart from playstation there's no need. I'm fine with a PC and a ps3 right now actually. Let alone a new generation which will probably have developers further downsizing and consolidating, with the same games going on every system from 3rd parties… Hurting and hampering creativity and development…

I'll probably end up with all the consoles again at some point but the only one I know I'll get early is PS4. As a long time Nintendo gamer it took me a while to make the jump over to the PS bandwagon, but ever since I hopped on when I bought my PS2 in May '03, I haven't been disappoitned.

This next generation of systems will actually most likely be the first I sit out of the day one purchase. I'm just to overloaded and backlogged I really don't care about a new system. I also have really been getting into the PC scene and it'll be cheaper for me to upgrade my graphics card when need be than to buy a new system.

I have plenty to play on my PS3, Vita, and PC for quite a while and it won't hurt me to sit out at least a year before buying a new system. When I do it will most likely only be Sony too.

I absolutely agree with you! I've just got too many games to catch up on, and too little time to catch up! This generation of games has been great to me. Eventually, I'll probably make the jump to PS4, but the PS3 has been great to me, and there's still a ton left for me to beat.

I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer, even though I have a Ps3, Xbox360 and a PSVita. Most of my games are on my Ps3. I mostly play Ps3, followed by Xbox 360 then my PSVita. The reason I got my Xbox360 was for the apps, I love most of the apps, VEVO, HBOGO, etc. I have to admit though, im excited for Forza Horizon.

I like my Xbox360 enough to warrant me an Xbox720 purchase. I don't ever see me buying a Nintendo console though.

Whilst Sony and the PS3 have my loyalty as the first console I bought since the Atari 2600 – and is the console of choice for my buddies for COD – as long as Gears and Halo are on the Xbox – ill likely buy it too.

The great thing about having 2 consoles when your in your 40s and lazy is that you can swap between 2 games without have to get up off the couch

I don't buy for "sides" sake. I have a lot of different consoles (including handheld) because they all offer something a little different and I love the tech. When they come out, I will see what they are all about and buy whatever catches my eye. I am incredibly loyal to Sony because I have been buying Sony products since the early 70s. My turntable, which was my first Sony buy, still plays records with flawless sound to this day. It doesn't affect the way I feel about other companies. They are all fine products and their fans love them. I just love Sony. It won't stop me from buying a WiiU. It looks awesome. I already picked up the 3DSXL to compliment my 3DS. They're really fun to use and work great. I guess my buying habits won't really change is what I'm saying, to make a long story short. Too late for that, huh? LOL

I think Sony`s 2015 plan is a survey of some sort…Its possible that Sony understands (and I use the word very loosely) that a new generation console is not what we, gamers, need.

I really wish PS4 wont be coming in another 5-10 years; seriously, what new feature could a new generation console possibly bring in? I`m not in the "I WANT A PHOTOREALISTIC UBER MAXIMUM HIGH GRAPHICS" group of gamers. Give me P4 HD with extra contents and I'm the happiest gamer alive!
