Bungie Says Cross-Platform Development Is Worth The Pain

These days, most developers have to embrace multiplatform development in order to stay alive. Cross-generation – i.e., across two generations – makes things even tougher.

Halo developer Bungie has been learning this lesson, apparently. They went from making their games for only one platform (Xbox) to creating Destiny for all current-gen consoles and the upcoming next-gen consoles. Not easy.

The developer was asked about the complex process in a recent Bungie Mail Sack edition.

"We get to invite more people to explore those worlds! Our community can welcome new players who may have never experienced a Bungie game before. Developing a cross-platform game is hard, but the perks outweigh the pain."

In speaking about the game itself, Bungie said Destiny will be able to "fit into your life." Basically, it won't feel like a chore, in that you have to grind like crazy to level up (like an MMO). No, this is all about fun, and about visiting an immersive, dynamic world "when it suits you." Destiny is currently one of the most anticipated games on the horizon; it's slated to launch some time next year. Are you up for this multiplayer-oriented shooter? It isn't for me, but many seem very excited.

Not sure I buy this stuff about it fitting into your life. They say that, but then you miss a couple weeks and there's nobody left at your measly experience level and people rape your corpse for fun or you wind up without a posse when ya need it.

This game has enormous potential for me. I would relish a Skyrim-level of immersion in this fantastic-sounding sci-fi setting. Has me very excited, though i sure do hope there's no subscription fee.
