As we push forward into a new generation and gaming becomes more and more mainstream with every passing day, we'd like to remind Sony of the following facts:
It'll be all too easy to succumb to the allure of the same ol' same ol', specifically for the sake of big sales to casual gamers. But don't forget – we don't think you will forget, but it's just a friendly reminder – that your claim to fame is new, exclusive IPs that are head-and-shoulders above the competition. It's your glossy calling card.
In my opinion, most of the absolute best games of the current generation were PS3 exclusives. All the Uncharted titles (especially the last two), Heavy Rain , God of War III , Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots , Gran Turismo 5 , The Last Of Us , Journey , several of the Killzone and Resistance titles, and I'd like to assume Beyond: Two Souls all rank right up there. Obviously, MGS and GT have been around a while, and GoW started late in the PS2 generation. But they're all exclusive, and most were new IPs.
These aren't just great games; these are games that helped drive the industry forward in a variety of ways. If you look at each, you'll see what I mean. I want to see more of this in the new generation, as in the eyes of many veteran gamers, the PlayStation brand thrives – and is even defined by – cutting-edge exclusives. This is the company's bread and butter and despite the annualization, despite the ongoing massive sales for games we've seen many times before, we all hope Sony understands their position. See, we're pretty sure they do; it's just important to let them know that we continue to appreciate it.
Deep Down Exclusive for Playstation 4.
Ugh, too bad it's MMO. If it's going to be subscription based like FFXIV, I'm out.
It doesn't look like an MMO,capcom didn't specify anything like that.Even if it is its different from any other MMO ever released with a Excellent concept
They did specify. It's an "online RPG," according to Capcom's description.
Sony isn't making it.
^ Your point? Sony didn't make Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Heavy Rain, or any of the Resistance games. The article was about Sony exclusives.
Sony was involved in those game though.
We'll have to see what The Order is all about, as well as what David Cage is up to for next gen. Also don't forget the games that was announced at Gamescom, especially RIME… a beautiful open world game for the PS4.
Deep Down looks way better than the Order
Dude, you and Deep Down should get a room.
I don't think they'll forget. They've already got Knack, DriveClub and The Order under their belts, and word is that most of their first-party studios are working on new IPs.
yeah ikeen to see wat else they're brewig over at SCE world wide studios i mean if the order and knack are anything to go by we're in gud hands.
happy gaming =)
one thing i really want to see $ony doing is prioritizing their studios better.
they need to start using their less popular studios, bend, cambridge, london, liverpool, japan, for more than just backup work.
leave the big studios, ND, SM, MM, GG, leave them to their licenses and please dont kill any more famous beloved playstation franchises!
theres plenty of side studios that $ony owns to bring in the new IPs.
look at ready at dawn and the order 1886.
for so many years these smaller studios have been in the shadows doing nothing, i mean what has $ony bend done in the past 6 years?
resistance retribution, uncharted golden abyss, and that crappy uncharted card game?
thats six years of work?
what about $ony cambridge?
its funny and really sad, these studios put out THE best games, yet there always left in the dark.
LBP for the vita is probably the best LBP game ever made!
so why are the developers always left in the shadows?
syphon filter is one of the biggest most popular playstation franchises, retribution is one of the best resistance games amazingly more its a freaking PSP game!
golden abyss fixed all the problems with the uncharted series, it actually placed you as a treasure hunter not your typical hollywood faceless boomtastic hero!
they create the best games in the industry time and time again, yet there left in the shadows.
that needs to change!
So… you're saying that prioritising their studios better means putting every single one exclusively on PS4 games to let the Vita flounder and die. Yeah, that simply wouldn't be a smart move on Sony's part.
Now… just to clarify things for you. Ready at Dawn are not owned by Sony. The developers of LBP Vita were Double 11, an independent studio that was signed for a three-game deal, though they have since been released from that contract. The Uncharted card game was outsourced. Bend had stuff-all to do with it. Sony Cambridge was rebranded as a satellite studio to Guerilla, helping them out with the Killzone series, releasing Mercenary VERY recently. Liverpool got shut down last year.
Studio Japan incorporates Team Ico and Polyphony, meaning that they have Freedom Wars/Panopticon, GT6/7, Last Guardian, Rain, Knack, Destiny of Spirits, and Soul Sacrifice Delta/2 in the works and probably at least one more unannounced game. They are probably Sony's strongest creative studio. They simply don't focus on massive IPs, and I'd hate to see them do so. London was last known to be working on an action-oriented Move game; strong odds are that it got migrated over to PS4.
I'm not saying that it's a bad idea for Sony to put all of their studios onto PS4 games (and it's been rumoured that they've done just that), but they do need to keep Vita titles coming if they want a chance at keeping the device afloat, and Sony is intent on doing just that.
and where did i say they cant work on vita games?
i said utilize them for new IPs and let the big name developers look after their franchises.
instead of saying sorry no sly cooper sucker punch are busy with infamous, let sanarzu look after it.
instead of saying sorry no J&D because ND are busy with uncharted let japan studio, or f*ck, ANYONE do it!
im sick of $ony using the excuse nah were not going to follow up with those franchises because their developers are preoccupied elsewhere.
So far the only new IP's Sony seem to be promoting for the PS4 are indie games… needless to say that does not encourage me to buy a next gen system when they're trying to sell me games that belong on iOS….
What I am hoping to see from Sonys studios next gen, is a lot more innovation.
Less "safe" platformer/shooter/racing/adventure games built around very proven – but oh so outplayed – formulas, and instead get more interesting concepts and/or settings.
Like Watch Dogs. Oh how I would love to see something like that from one of Sonys studios. Games that are built around contemporary topics of surveillance/digital footprints/Big Brother.
Games that dares being *different* in one way or another. Games that makes people talk about more than just hefty graphics.
That's what I am hoping to see. But I am not holding my breath… 🙁
Dude…Sony was the only console manufacturer doing anything innovative in the past generation. Heavy Rain, Journey, the upcoming Beyond, and while people can say Uncharted wasn't innovative, they're wrong for a number of reasons.
From a platform perspective, I saw very little innovation from anyone but PlayStation.
And let's not forget there was never a sandbox game with the mechanics of inFamous previously.
I don't think Watch Dogs is going to be so different when it comes, probably more like a digital age GTA.
i'd almost say anything coming out anymore that ISN'T open world/sandbox is daring to be different 😉
@Ben:
Heavy Rain, Journey and the upcoming Beyond are excellent examples of innovation, but they are all 3rd party. I am talking about 1st party, Sonys own studios, the projects directly controlled and directed by Sony.
@World:
I don't see any major principal differences between Infamous and, say, any of the sandbox Spiderman games or other superpower sandbox games.
I just want to see something that is a more… Contemporary, I guess. Something that, like I say, makes people talk about more than just good graphics. More innovative ways of telling a story, or different gameplay, made with the budgets that only Sony can provide. That's what I'd like to see coming from Sony this next gen.

@Beam, I think those would be 2nd party. Studio is not owned by Sony but making a Sony owned IP.
Did you play any of the inFamous games? Cole functions in a fundamentally different way from any other sandbox character vis a vis his environment.
@World; In what way do you think Cole interact differently than the other games with the environment?
Every way. Nothing else plays like that.
Do you mean the particular superpowers? Those are of course unique, but I would not call the game world or the way the game plays, the mission system, skill levelling or how the story is told for particularly unique. It's pretty much how they all are as far as I can tell.
But they are of course really fun! Infamous is my favourite 1st party game, easily. Great games indeed.
I can't speak much for Spider-man but I think Infamous feels like a platformer-shooter in an open world.
Odd isn't it? Games that aren't open world seem to be universally hated on these days. I miss the old days.
Jawknee: You got a point.
But please note that I am not saying I don't want to see anything that is oldschool/traditional ever again. But after all these decades with the basic linear racing/platformer/adventure/shooter concepts with a plain, safe and predictable story I really think that the manufacturer of a gaming platform should focus on bringing something *new*, something that makes their platform stand out from the crowd and give it a very distinct contemporary profile.
And if they do go the "traditional concept route" then at the very least give it something *else* that is contemporary. And that is where I use Watch Dogs as example. Even if that game were to be just a shooter, the topic here is just so insanely much more relevant and interesting than the over-played nonsense that goes on in Killzone.
This is what I wish Sony would do. Take some chances with their first party studios, move outside the comfort zone of the tested and proven.
I remember pre-ps3 and didn't feel particularly partial to most of anything Sony had it's name on. I suspect that the intense competition from MS with the 360 helped make Sony's exclusives what they are today.
and yah, I know it's more family targeted and Nintendo'ish realm, but LBP really should be on that list as it nailed a lot of GotY's when it released. I don't think anyone expected that one to make such a splash like it did.
I suspect the exclusives would be the same no matter who the competition was.
You suspect so huh? HUH? What you wanna start something? THROW DOWN right now! =p
yah, I dunno. I think when Sony started seeing the lagging sales and fleeting third-party exclusives they themselves doubled down on their own ip's for PS3. Seems to me that way, judging by the surge of quality and quantity they produced this past gen.
THough I agree that it could've been any other name in MS's spot. But I think due to MS's own success with Halo + LIVE and shooters we saw Sony react with this surge of shooters themselves. yay for MAG =p
I liked Warhawk though!
