Sony On PS4: The Production Yields Have Been “Phenomenal”

We've said it before and we'll say it again: It's absolutely critical that Sony has enough PlayStation 4 units to go around this holiday season.

The appalling availability of the PS3 at launch is a big sore spot in the history of the PlayStation brand, and helped to dig an early hole for Sony. But this time around, the company intends to produce. Big time.

SCEA boss Jack Tretton told FOX Business that Sony is actually holding some back stock of PS4 consoles so they'll be available to purchase on launch day. When asked about the current demand, Tretton replied that "it's everything we can manufacture." However, as they want to make sure that consumers have the chance of getting a PS4 this holiday season, they're "holding back some inventory."

Thankfully, he added that "production yields have been phenomenal" so when November 15 rolls around, it will become the biggest launch in PlayStation history. Tretton wouldn't provide the public with an exact figure, but he did say this- "There's so much pent-up demand for it that you could sell every one that you could create." That's good to hear, right? And if production is high, then everyone should be happy. Or most everyone, anyway; you can't hope to please every single consumer.

I do think it important Sony secures this big early lead. I believe it helps to really set the tone for the coming years.
The hardcore heart helps to virally spread the favored platform as time goes on. Small things like usually seeing a guy coming to the counter with a PS4 version of a game to another asking if there's a PS4 in stock can create a demand illusion that helps bolster a wider appeal.

This console is smaller and cheaper to develop so meeting demands should be a none issue. The X1 on the other hand is not launching in many countries and that thing is the size of a car.

im debating on whether I should just wait till the 2.0 version comes out. I always buy the launch Playstation and then later on Sony comes out with a cooler, slimmer, and more efficient version. I get stuck with the old fat version.

this wave of consoles should last longer. Far less heat being produced this time around. heat + electronics = faster death

That's a weird thing to say this gen when the launch PS3 is STILL by far the best version, with PS2 BC, 4 USB ports, much better-looking… I'd buy a new launch-PS3 in a heartbeat if it was still available!

Although my PS4 is paid for, I might take some popcorn and a lawn chair down to the nearest Wal-Mart on November 15th and watch the madness ensue. It's cheaper than pay per view fights and way more entertaining.

Yes, please record it and then let everyone see it. Seeing people go nuts over something material is always funny.

Make sure you get close-ups of the stampede at the beginning rush when midnight hits, any mugging victims that are lying on the ground, and the perpetrator's face as they run away.

YouTube gold/courtroom evidence awaits for you, tes. 🙂

For the first time, in a long time, I truly believe Sony (knock on wood) will tackle first place. Basically it's theirs to lose. Speaking from the standpoint of a parent, Sony is far more appealing.

I have been saying it even before the PS4 reveal. Sony is in domination mode. Laser focused.

Fact: If shelves are packed there will be an outcry that PS4 isn't selling.

Fact: If shelves are empty there will be an outcry that Sony didn't have enough stock.

Fact: If there an in between state, no one will comment on this because it's not sensational.

bit stogie to hold back stock for launch day no?
its a bit unfair expecting people to go line up in the 20+ hour que in hopes that by the time they get in all the stocks not depleted.
hate it when companies do this, just let everyone preorder till stocks replenished that way they know whether to attend or not.
nothing worse than waiting in line for hours to only find you waited for nothing.

I've always wondered if it might be worth it to line up. When the ps3 had its midnight launch at HMV, I was right by the store an hour and 30 mins to midnight and didn't jump in line, i just left it. I should mention at this point that there was almost no one in line at that point. 15 mins later and it was round the bend and i thought naaah i'm good. Only to find out the first 100 people in line or so got free 40" Bravia tvs worth twice the price of the PS3. o_O!!!! that was my face, i could have sold that bravia, and paid for my ps3 and bought a smaller tv to boot.

Yeah..if sony gives stuff out this time around, i want some prorder love
