Cage: “We’re Getting Closer And Closer To True Photorealism”

I still don't want to see true photorealism in my video games, but that doesn't mean it won't happen.

The days when games will look very much like movies might not be too far away. Quantic Dream boss David Cage spoke about the topic of increasingly realistic visuals at a GDC Europe panel (as summarized at GamesIndustry.biz ).

He admits it won't be easy because there will always be something that reminds us that what we're seeing is fictional, but the PS4 may take the first steps toward the crazy realm of photorealism. Said Cage:

"I think we are getting closer and closer to photorealistic rendering. I don't know if we will reach a point during this cycle where you won't be able to tell the difference between a film and a game, but I know we're going to get really close to that during this cycle."

There's no doubt that game graphics have increased rapidly over the course of three decades. It's downright mind-boggling to see that upcoming next-gen games actually evolved from something like Pong . Of course, this leads to very different interactive experiences and the question is whether or not photorealistic interaction has potentially negative impacts on people. Personally, I think it'd be kinda creepy to have control over things that look exactly like real human beings…
