Capcom Warned Staff: “At This Rate, We’ll Be Left Behind”

If you hadn't already guessed, Capcom's Deep Down is an effort to push West…again.

Capcom executive corporate officer and director Katsuhiko Ichii told Famitsu (as cited by DualShockers ) that initially, the idea for their new IP "bubbled up" when they were checking out the impressive PlayStation 4 hardware.

And as for the game's new Panta Rhei engine, which has gotten plenty pf press, Ichii had this to say:

"Working on new hardware is a commitment, and has become a considerable investment (laughs). However, we’re Capcom, so we should always compete at the top level on a global scale. At E3 last year I felt there was an amazing increase in quality between the titles by European and American developers. To be honest, I felt very impatient. It was enough to gather the staff during E3 in an emergency meeting to tell them 'We’re in trouble, at this rate we’ll be left behind' (laughs)."

Um, yes, you will be left behind if you haven't already. And I'm not sure it's something to laugh about, either. However, although I personally don't care about Deep Down as it's basically an MMO, it is bound to appeal to a great many Western gamers. And hey, it could turn out to be pretty damn good, too. And at the very least, Capcom is trying to close that gap between American/European and Japanese productions. "A" for effort…?
