When Street Fighter V launched in February, we couldn't help but notice a disturbing lack of content.
The in-game store wouldn't be open for a few weeks, there was no standard Arcade Mode, and the full-fledged Story Mode isn't going to be here until June .
Now, executive producer Yoshinori Ono has responded to the lack of content criticisms. In a recent Game Informer interview (via GameSpot ), Ono said Capcom "underestimated" the importance of single-player features. Yeah, well, a lot of developers are falling prey to this.
Said Ono:
"I think it's safe to say that we underestimated the popularity of some of the single-player features. That said, we are excited about the two all-new single-player modes–character story and survival–and we have plans to continue to refine and expand onto those experiences."
The good news is that Capcom intends to work on SFV for a very long time. Ono says the game "is an evolving platform that will continue to get more refined and built over time." He also admitted that SFV released in February to coincide with the Capcom Pro Tour, a competitive gaming league featuring the franchise. And in retrospect, maybe the game shipped out…a little light:
"We understand that if we had more features ready at launch, it probably would've been better received by some of our more casual fans who tend to enjoy Street Fighter more via single-player content, as opposed to competitive play. There's a delicate balance between our hardcore and casual players. We understand that the game serves several needs and we'll continue to work hard to strike that perfect balance so that we can live up to our 'Street Fighter for all' mission."
'sigh' Welcome to the world where video games are rapidly becoming ongoing "services," which of course gives developers and publishers an excuse to release partially complete products. "Oh, that stuff is coming," is something we hear way too often these days.

This was rushed out the door and most gamers regardless whether they're casual or hardcore gamers would have appreciated a more robust single player experience.
The "we underestimated single player" is more like "oh shit, we f*ked up and we will try to fix it".
Single player doesn't really matter too much. But they should of sure as hell created the best modes to help people train and improve and be challenged. I don't understand people who just want to play SF to beat up easy COMs. There's better looking games out there with cooler moves. Teach players how to beat other players and the series will shine.
Most importantly, how about not having the single player offline modes REQUIRE an online sign-in. I got disconnected in stage 25 survival (which sucked anyway).
Capcom not the only company/game that is forgetting single player. Looks at all the fps games that have come out lately that didnt have a proper single player campaign experience. Was most disappointed that Rainbow Six Siege didnt have one..
Do you think the multiplayer trend set by Call of Duty is to blame?
@Hanz64
I say yes to your question.
I was shocked to see a Street Fighter (which is practically an arcade game) not have an Arcade mode…
It's ridiculous. And it's one of those things that make you go: "What on earth were they thinking?"
They bothered to put in a "Story Mode", but they don't have a simple "Arcade Mode"?
What?
Yes, they can easily remedy this through DLC, but this is exactly the kind of trend that I find worrying, especially as the years go by.
Street Fighter V is the first Street Fighter that didn't have an arcade cabinet release.
Funny that it's practically not an arcade game.
And oh yeah.
WHAT THE HELL DID THEY DO TO KEN???
A redesign so bad, the first time saw it, I thought it was a new character. The outfit isn't the problem, but the face and hair…
I'm sorry, it just doesn't look like Ken.
Maybe if you squint…
Ken has always been my favorite character in the series and I must say that you are completely right. Ken looks like a b* and it has turned me off from using.
There's your problem. Your fav char out of every single SF character is just Ken.
That's not a problem because I also used Cammy and Fei Long.
Well Kojima even did similar errors, since Peace Walker he started to not caring much about the fans and design the games however he wanted, no more boss squad:
MGS 1 – Foxhound
MGS 2 – Deadcell
MGS 3 – The Cobras
MGS 4 – The Beauty & The Beast unit
MGSPW – Not.
MGS 5 – Not.
or main villains getting a boss fight, he also cut the codec and that's something a lot of fans missed.
SFV not getting an Arcade mode and instead putting an awful history mode (that a baby on youtube can even beat) it's awful I hate the stupid history they made why even include it when they are putting another history mode on June lol, worst of all they could use the images they used on history mode and just made a legit Arcade mode with it, developers are caring about what the fans like less.
Well, holy crap, that's a surprise. I mean, imagine that, gamers liking single player modes? Who'd have figured that out after 4 frickin' decades of arcade fighters playing against the AI. Talk about stating the blindingly obvious. Sure gamers want to play against each other, but they also enjoy vegging out with the controller and beating up the computer.
Multi-player in fighting games can be truly frustrating and game killing unless you're good enough to compete. It gets very tired very quickly if you can't beat folks. Soul Calibur 4 had online play, which was OK, but I spent far more time playing against the AI. I'd have preferred an HD Soul Calibur that followed the framework of SC3, which was against the AI, unless you had local multiplayer with 2 controllers.
Honestly, It seems like modern game developers have been blinded by online play and social networking and have forgotten that the whole point of a game console (hand held or home) is that you, the player are core to the experience, if the game doesn't work Solo, then it's not going to work online. So, focus on solo play first and then open up the online. The only time that doesn't work is in games with team play functionality such as squad shooters and MMORPGs which require multiple players working together. Otherwise online modes are typically 1 on 1 player vs player matches, and there is only so much you can do with that in a game like Street Fighter.

What troubles me the most is that they already have a "Story mode" (which arguably takes more time & effort to create) but no "Arcade mode"?
How does that even happen?
I just can't figure out why the dev team would decide to omit such a basic mode.
Perhaps they will release the arcade mode as DLC at a later date and then we will have to pay…
Oh yeah.
This is what modern gaming has come to…
Nah you'll have much much more fun if the games taught you how to overcome other players.
Can you explain the fun in fighting an AI that reads your inputs and can DP on will during your whiffed Light Punch?
If they combine the teaching and challenging modes TO single player then that is GREAT. But they can't, because fighting game devs aren't pushed to succeed like true AAA devs.
Cheating AI doesn't invalidate playing against the console. As I've said before, people play fighting games for multiple reasons, some just want to relax and beat up the computer some, while others enjoy playing against a human opponent. Each to their own.
As for AI that reads your commends as they are input, that's downright cheating. I had a big problem with that in SC$'s Tower of Souls because after 30-odd floors or more the AI cranked up the cheating with the ability to respond to your attacks immediately, and stringing together attacks faster than a human can. I don't mind difficult AI, but the AI should be limited to accomplishing what a human can accomplish, so strap it down with a 0.2 second reaction time lag like the biologicals playing against it, and then let's talk.
