Ubisoft’s The Crew Is “Really An MMO”

There are several highly anticipated racing games heading to retail later this year, including Gran Turismo 6 , Forza 5 and DriveClub .

But Ubisoft's The Crew is a different beast. In speaking to IGN , Ubisoft senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key spoke about their racer's distinct differences. First and foremost, they're calling it an "MMO:"

"Saying it’s a racing game is a little bit ambiguous, because what does that mean? DriveClub and Forza are doing heavy simulation, where you can almost smell the leather. That’s really not what The Crew is. The Crew is open world. What we’re saying is that it’s really an MMO. You really need to be connected to get the most out of it. We do think that it’s a genre-bender, because the best way to play The Crew is online with friends. Hands down. I don’t think that’s necessarily going to be the case with these other games on the market, so we think we have a unique spot there. By the way, for an open world game, it’s actually quite beautiful."

Okay, but for the record, Mr. Key, Evolution Studios has confirmed several times that DriveClub isn't designed to be a simulator. Might want to fix that. Otherwise, we get what he's saying. In regards to the next generation of console technology, Key added that the biggest advantage will be "the density it can offer to open worlds." The extra power will add more NPCs, better visuals, larger environments, etc. Well, yes, we assumed.

Still wouldn't mind seeing more advancements in the linear, storytelling realm, though. That's important, too.

Ubi are doing well. The Division looks like a solid game.

This, if the customisation is good, then this could steal a lot of NFS fans.

I think it is interesting to note how mmo's now seem to finally branch out from the standard RPG formula. Very welcome.
