GameStop CEO: PlayStation VR Has The Software Edge

As always, no matter how fancy and appealing the hardware is, without the software to support it, well…

Sony is well aware of the importance of a healthy launch lineup, and they're on record saying that PlayStation VR will have at least 20 titles available upon the anticipated device's release, and there are over 100 games currently in development .

Speaking at the ICR Conference 2016, GameStop CEO Paul Raines emphasized the importance of a strong initial lineup, and he added that Sony has the edge in that department (via GameSpot ):

"The more important thing will be the title count at launch. I think that's going to be big. And from what we can see at this point, Sony seems to have the strongest title count."

Of course, we don't have exact game counts for any of the competing VR devices, either, but Raines should have some inside info. Unsurprisingly, the GameStop boss believes virtual reality entertainment "is a big part" of the company's future, but they won't fall into the trap of factoring VR sales into its financial outlook:

"Once we know more about it, we'll plug it in. But I certainly think [GameStop] is going to be a store you're going to want to buy your virtual reality products at. And it will come with a variety of accessories, by the way–there'll be goggles and gloves and motion [controllers] and all kinds of things. So it's very promising in a lot of ways."

A new report said PlayStation VR could sell 1.9 million units in 2016 , which would be on the low end compared to the competition. However, after Oculus Rift was given a $600 price tag, everyone started to wonder if Sony's device might have the price edge . And if they've got the edge in terms of price (it might only launch at $400) and more games to boot, Sony should be in a solid position for this very new hardware war.
