Sonic’s 25th Birthday: A New Logo, Maybe A New Game?

Believe it or not, one of the industry's original icons is turning 25 years old in 2016.

That's right, the spiky spinning hedgehog is a quarter-century old and to celebrate, the Sonic Twitter page has shown off a brand new logo.

But that's not all: Den Of Geek noted that Crush 40 lead singer Johnny Gioeli put up a suggestive post on his Facebook page. The post has since been pulled but evidently, it said:

"We are planning a few performances for 2016 to commemorate the anniversary of Sonic. We might participate in writing new songs for the anniversary game…stay tuned…"

Later, Crush 40 took to Twitter and denied knowing anything about such a project. But is the cat already out of the bag? Maybe it's time for Sonic to make his debut on the new consoles. After a string of terrible 3D releases, the series went back to its roots last generation and the result was Sonic Generations in 2011, a damn good game.

Perhaps Sonic should always remain 2D…

Honestly haven't liked it much since Sonic 2. The Dreamcast games are really neat but I can't ever figure out where the f*ck to go next.

The Dreamcast games were meant for department store displays. All flash and WOW with not much substance.

Yup. 25 this year. Oh how we've grown!!

But yeah, Sonic should stay 2D. I still don't get why there isn't space for 2D and 3D games these days.

I also miss the days where you had a finite number of lives and actually had to challenge yourself.

It was all about the rings..and then the wumpa fruit…and then the eco and precursor eggs…

Nowadays its just shoot everything in sight. Eat sleep rave repeat.

I liked some of the 3D games *as a rollercoaster ride*. The problems were the jolting stops. There is a fluid motion to Sonic games and having it stop or lose that momentum is like stopping your favorite song, slamming into a wall at 80MPH. It's jarring.

To me there's two different things in the last 3D games. One is giving the player a beautiful 2D 2.5D world, with familiar 2D challenges. The second is a visually rich 3D rollercoaster like experience. It fails when it ejects you out of it and smack dab right into a wall.

Some improvements for me would be:

• not lose all your coins when damaged. he's had 25 years to get a better coin wallet.
• make the game play deliberate. either give the player a fluid rollercoaster experience or familiar yet fun gameplay.

hope this makes sense
