Dear Microsoft: A Lifelong Multi-Console Owner Thanks You

This is a genuine letter of thanks to Microsoft. No sarcasm.

Dear Microsoft,

Thank you. My entire life, I've struggled beneath the yoke of a multi-console owner. Dating back to the Super Nintendo era, I have never managed to play on only one gaming platform for an entire generation. The closest I came was when I heavily favored the original PlayStation and never bought the N64. But that's only because I was going through a JRPG obsession phase and I still played a ton on the PC. Heroes of Might and Magic FTW!

The bottom line is that I've always been a multi-console owner. I wanted a Sega Genesis soon after getting the SNES because, quite frankly, there were games I needed to play on Sega's machine. And so it was for many, many years. I thought I'd only own the PS2 but I got the Xbox during the second year of its availability, swayed by the likes of Halo , Deathrow , Panzer Dragoon Orta and Indigo Prophecy . I bought the 360 before the PS3. I've always believed that if you want to play the best of the best, if you want to get the most out of this hobby, you can't do it with only one console. You'll simply miss out on too much.

And that's why I was a little concerned this year. I'd want both the new PlayStation and Xbox because…well, because that's what I do. I might wait a little on one or the other, but the plan was basically written in stone. I used history and my gaming habits as a guide. So I just figured I'd have to shell out a large chunk of change in a short span of time, and I'd also have to make some decisions with my entertainment center. Good God, what stays hooked up and what has to go in the closet? I was dreading these decisions as well as the seemingly inevitable impact on my wallet.

However, now that everything seems abundantly clear, I feel like a weight has been lifted. I feel like I can breathe again. Multi-console owner? Why? The Wii U is a joke and a half in my eyes (and incredibly depressing, given my long-time adoration of the iconic company that started me in this industry). And your Xbox One is an even bigger joke. I will not be tethered to your corporate policies and mandates. We're all watched far too often as it is; I don't need another device to be all creepy in my home. I don't want 24-hour "check-ins." I don't care about having an "all-in-one" hub that, as far as I can tell, can't do much more than the PS4. I've got a cable box, thanks. And Plus is better than Live now, anyway.

The games might eventually sway me but right now, it's not looking good for you, Microsoft. I know many of your third-party "exclusives" will either be timed exclusives or in fact, not exclusive at all. Or, I just don't care about them. As for your exclusives…'sigh' I've had my fill of shooters and shooting-focused games (first- or third-person). The main ones; I don't need another Halo after being very disappointed in Halo 4 , Forza has never matched up to Gran Turismo , and I'll take Uncharted over Gears of War any day of the week and twice on Sunday. So what exactly am I paying $500 for , Microsoft? Where's this incredible "value" you speak of?

I don't need the added stress. And thankfully, I don't have to worry about it. So, I thank you. I feel so much better now.

Keep it. When they do Resistance 4, I'm sure it'll be multiplatform and only then will I care.

If they do end up making Resistance 4, it will still be exclusive to PlayStation consoles because Sony owns the rights.

Which is why they won't do it.

Get Naughty Dog to do it?

Dunno about who should do Resistance 4, but I hope it won't be Naughty Dog. Not because they cannot be brilliant at it, but because they excel more in storytelling. Not that FPS games cannot benefit by that but going by the trend of most people that play such games, the single player campaign that ND could make is likely to get ignored right off the bat.

No Naughty Dog does not need to get into the FPS business.

The 24 hour check-in is just absurd. It's like your console is on house arrest. I don't want a console, that fresh out of the box, is guilty of something. It's kind of fitting for MS though, I think they're crooks, and their console is a nice reflection of that.

Yeah that's the impression I get, they treat us like criminals. Yet this move looks like they retain partial ownership of your console.

That's the thing that bothers me more than anything else. The vast majority of us go online with our consoles regularly to get software patches, check out online stores, play multiplayer, etc. So why would you FORCE everyone to check in DAILY? It really, really rubs me the wrong way. And I can't even imagine a scenario where it isn't incredibly intrusive and cumbersome.

You both have it exactly right — why are you treating ME like a criminal on probation, Microsoft? I bought exactly one used game in the last 15 years (because it was out of print at the time.) I'm a dutiful subscriber to Live (I'll be letting that silly service expire at the end of my current membership.) I've never hacked a console. I've never pirated a console game. So how DARE you check in on me like a parent keeping an eye on a small child?

I put up an article on a similar subject just after the Xbox One reveal: http://www.onlysp.com/did-the-xbox-one-reveal-end-the-console-wars/

Basically the three main systems are aiming at different people now imo. That means there could be a very significant number of gamers who are no longer multiple console owners.

Even I went back and forth on getting a 360 for games like Lost Odyssey but I can't think of any of the MS exclusives on Xbone that I simply must have now. I'm fairly certain we will get Titanfall eventually and that looks like a good time for a short time only. While I really like the concept behind RYSE it appears to have a searingly painful amount of quicktime kills (every single skirmish). That would just get annoying.

You're completely right. What these consoles show is a separation of markets into niches. Nintendo is still clearly in the VERY casual and kiddy market.

MS has transitioned from appealing to semi-casual gamers (online multiplayer gamers) instead to TV aficionados who might game once in a while. But it alienated those people by forgetting that semi-casual gamers probably want to play games in the easiest way possible and want to be able to sell/trade their games and buy used.

Sony hasn't really changed. That's both good and bad in different ways. It's hedging on a (solid) bet that hardcore gamers want what they had before. But that's precisely their market: It's still appealing to hardcore gamers. Its closest rival is now PC gaming and Steam, not MS or Nintendo (although Nintendo hasn't been a clear rival for 6+ years).

Actually, moving forward it is MS who is being VERY casual.

Not even Nintendo dared to turn their console into a glorified TV cable box like MS did and the Xbone reveal.

Plus Nintendo is not forcing motion controls on games anymore. Aside from a touch-screen, you play pretty much the same way on the Wii U as with a traditional pad.

This while MS is making Kinect mandatory and one of the main ways to interact with the Xbone.

So MS clearly is going after casuals with their new console. And with the Call of Duty game (with dog included), they also have a lot of 8 year old kids in the bag as well.

I've said it before but I really think it's an interesting point: It's really ironic that while they now are based on the same architecture they are more different from eachother than ever.

They won't be releasing in Asia until 2014, they've managed to piss off millions in their biggest market and the whizz-bang gewgaws they spent an hour promoting at the reveal won't be available in 20 of the 21 countries that they're launching in.
Then you have their middle digit opinion of the military and the "trust us; we won't spy on you" statements from a company that has proven time and again that they can't be trusted. Oh, and placing the interests of publishers over consumers as well as forcing those customers to phone home to the mothership to prove that they're not filthy thieves was a masterful touch. They can't trust us but we're expected to trust them? Riiight! Every day and in every way, they make my decision to switch easier and easier!

Hah! This is almost exactly how I felt. I dreaded the idea of shelling out $1,000 or so (including taxes and NOT including games…) for both systems. I thought that I'd have to do without one (the Xbox One) for a while in order to save money. But I literally do not have any impetus to buy that console now.

The decision to invest in the PS4 was already fairly easy because Sony's machine has the exclusives I care about (single-player narratives, mostly). But last generation, I was tempted by Gears of War and the fact that Bethesda RPGs played better on the 360. This generation, I haven't seen ANYTHING to motivate me to buy their console.

I have a cable box; I have Netflix already; I have a Smart TV; and I have a remote control. All the Xbox One brings to the table is [the unnecessary gimmick of] voice activation, annoying DRM, and unthinkable amounts of mandates and online activations.

So, yes, thank you, Microsoft and the Xbox One team in specific for keeping my pockets heavy and easing my hardware purchase decision.

Bonampak

If you want to play games not found on Sony systems & you consider yourself a gamer first and not a console warrior, then you have to branch out now and then.

Being a Resident Evil fan since the original one, I had to buy a GameCube. Or else miss out on playing the RE1 remake and RE Zero. These two games have never been ported to a non-Nintendo console.

And I also got a Wii to play Xenoblade and The Last Story. Two of the best JRPG's of last gen and justified getting a dirt cheap Wii just to play them. They were vastly superior to what Squeenix has delivered in many years.

I never liked MS. So I never personally bought any of their consoles. But some family members did. And I did enjoy Halo 2 at the time it came out. Don't regret playing it.

@Bonampak
That's not the case. There is not a single game on Xbox that interests me enough to purchase the console. A few interesting ones, but its not enough.

When I know that I will love most of the first party games Sony pumps out.

@Kiryu – You mean the Dolphin emulator? I don't think it was up and running on PC's back in 2002. And the RE1 remake didn't actually played to perfection on a PC emulator until a couple of years ago. I just couldn't wait to play it. So I got a cube for those games.

@AcHiLLiA – No, I'm talking about the 2002 remake of Resident Evil 1. One of the best Resident Evil games of all time. If not the best of them all.

@Akuma07 – I agree with you on what you said about Xbox. I liked Halo 2 but it wasn't enough for me to buy the console.

However, with those exclusive Resident Evil games on Gamecube, I just couldn't act indifferent. Being a fan of the series, I just had to branch out. And 10+ years later and those RE games are still exclusive to Nintendo consoles. So I was right about going multiplat that time.

I have to say though, that my main systems were always Sony consoles. Any other console were used exclusively to play the games that I just couldn't find on a PlayStation device.

"The Wii U is a joke and a half in my eyes"

Someone get this man some glasses. Screw that. Binoculars.

Great read, though. Focusing on one console can have its benefits. You get the absolute best out of one console, instead of trying to support two and making those tough 'which to buy' decisions. For me, I will remain a multi-console owner for the rest of my natural life. And my unnatural life, if they have games on the other side. Let's hope so.

Bonampak

When I first saw footage of Mario Kart 8 at E3 I also thought it was all a joke. Those graphics were too damn good for a Wii U game. I still can't believe those were actual in-game graphics running 60fps in real-time on that console.

And that "X" JRPG game (sequel to Xenoblade) looked mighty fine too.

So I doubt that I'll be a one console owner next gen. It's too early to tell anyways.

Wii U is actually a lot of fun and the off TV play feature is worth having the gamepad alone. We're gonna see some pretty and fun games from Nintendo's in house developers in the future. Rumor has it Retro and Nintendo are in talks about a new Metroid. Metroid in 1080p at 60fps? YES PLEASE!

Well I find a unique quality in Nintendo hardware. They are simply doing enjoyable things others are not. People can call it a gimmick but does it really matter if their target audience finds it enjoyable? For me I really like Nintendo's OS and their MiiVerse community. I also find that a second screen enhances gameplay whether it be something all simple as having the HUD and map on the gamepad or extreme elements like in ZombiU. People ask why they don't just release their games on Playstation, well people can and do same the same about Sony and their exclusives not being available on Xbox. As you know console makers want to sell consoles and to do that they have their exclusive software. A lot of people find a lot of value in Nintendo's franchises and are willing to buy their hardware to play them. I rather like having two consoles I can go back and forth with.

It was doing that for me before the update. I was also experiencing muddy textures on signs (although that got suddenly better the second time I played) and it would even seem that some of the trophies are glitched as well.

No it wasn't. I noticed the problem immediately after the update. Before it loaded fine and within a minute. After 4.45 it took over 3 minutes. Mostly because the counter kept starting over.

EDIT: Ugh, it's doing of again. Now its stick at 98.02%. I'm getting paranoid.

Yup this problem is because of 4.45. I just moved all my save data to my old ps3 that is still on 4.41 and the last of us loaded fine and in less than 30 seconds. On my slim that has 4.45 it takes 2 to 3 minutes if it even loads at all.

Yes, I had automatic-update on my PS3, and didn't realize it at the time and it downloaded the new firmware. I found out close to the afternoon that my PS3 was on and it already finished, thankfully nothing happened, even though Sony can fix it with a firmware update, they said it's nothing major.

I had something similarish to say awhile back. I was never a fanboy of anything. I didn't care about one console over the other. Because each (other than the 360 which broke soon after getting it) had its uses. When i heard FF13 was going to xbox i was hyped. Thought "oh man, now everyone gets to experience the thing i grew up with." When i played the game, and saw what a HUGE failure that crap was, at first i blamed SE.

I read up on some stuff thats disappeared off of the googles for some reason, but anyway MS went foward and wanted FF on xbox. SE agreed of course and went for it. But, under 5 disks. So they took what FF13 was going to be, and fit it on 3 disks. Soon after that i researched some more. Bungie's attempts at breaking free. Halo supposedly going ps3 and 360. Lots of stuff. Then i reached dirty stuff. Like condenmed 2. Thats when stuff made me realize what microsoft really was.

Then even more so, the whole thing about bill gates stealing something from the apple guy. Just hoe low they sink to get ahead. Bribery, lies, false information, all of that. With me already being upset with nintendo i damn near quit video games. I even stopped playing my ps3. Then, i played Demons Souls. I had some faith restored, because of Sony. This whole xbox one business is obviously what people call "karma" MS had it coming, no one can do what they do forever. No matter how rich you area, something will always bring you down.

I've already stopped supporting MS, but i can't bring myself to stop supporting Nintendo, Grandfathers of todays video games. Sure, i dont like what their doing, but their nintendo. And Sony is the one company i've never had to worry about with quality. I've never been screwed by them. I've called customer service twice in the entirety of the years ive had sony products and once was because i didn't know ps plus had auto refill and i thought someone was stealing from my account.

Second time was for my Vaoi, it had a blue screen. turned out i didnt update BIOS, whatever that is, and so they explained how to update it. My 2006 ps3 can't play games but it can do everything else. My ps2 i got for my 10th birthday is sitting right next to my ps3. That old thing still running FFX and 12 like no ones business.

So if im still playing video games in ten years, ill be using Sonys and nintendos consoles if their still around anyways. Anything can happen, i just hope Sony AND Nintendo manage to not become what MS did. They have always actually cared about their fans and not the money fans gave them.

Sorry for the long post but i figured id throw in my own personal thing to say lol

Knightzane,
As far as Bill Gates stealing from Apple, are you referring to the suit that Apple filed against them in the '80s for stealing the look and feel of the Mac OS? Nonsense; Apple took that from Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center after they were given a guided tour. Xerox PARC originated Ethernet, GUI's and many of the things we take for granted with computers. Gates and company took the same tour. Microsoft has been plenty abusive in their business practices but they didn't really do anything wrong in that instance.

bldudas1

I remember reading somewhere final Fantasy XIII was designed for a dual layer Blu-ray, which is like 50 GB. Then Square Enix wanted it on the 360, so it had to get chopped up to be put on three DVDs, which are like 7.8 GB each, dual layer. So that is why the game only opens up towards the end, which is the last disk on the 360.

But yeah, after reading about what Microsoft has done and wants to do with the XBOne, no way am I going to support them anymore.
