When those controversial Spike TV Video Game Awards fell through, noted industry personality Geoff Keighley decided to host his own awards show.
The Game Awards did well in 2014 and managed to return this year . Now, after another strong showing, Keighley is confident the awards ceremony will continue into 2016.
Speaking to Polygon , Keighley confirmed that last week's show garnered 2.3 million viewers on YouTube and Twitch, which represents a 20 percent rise. He said earlier he expected the number of viewers to exceed 2 million and so it did. The show also broke even this year (as opposed to losing money in 2014), which is obviously a step in the right direction. Said Keighley:
"A tighter production technically, a shorter run time, and more on-stage awards. The format feels good, and it's been nice to see the audience response – two solid years means we're on the right path."
Keighley now says he's "pretty confident" about a third show in December 2016, and he added that he'd like to run a big eSports tournament the day of the awards. This year, CD Projekt Red's acclaimed RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt took home the show's overall Game of the Year award . And while Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain won Best Action/Adventure Game, the fact that Konami barred Hideo Kojima from accepting the award got everyone all lathered up.
And perhaps rightfully so.
