E3 2013: PS4 To Cost $399, Will Launch This Holiday Season

That hurts, doesn't it, Microsoft?

Sony has just announced that the PlayStation 4 will debut at $399 in the US this holiday season. Unfortunately, we didn't get an exact launch date, as they're still saying it'll arrive "holiday 2013."

This is a critically important point- the price. And with a $399 price tag, that comes in at $200 less than the PS3, which launched back in 2006. Of course, we suppose you could add the cost of the PlayStation Plus subscription (as it will be required to play games online, it seems), but you gotta do the same thing with the Xbox One, yes? The Live membership needed for online entertainment is still in existence, as far as we know. And with the games they showed off at Sony's press conference, it appears that the PS4 is firmly in the driver's seat.

It was also announced that the Gaikai cloud service will be available in 2014. I'm going to go get some trailers now, just to make sure you see 'em all. 🙂 There are many you don't want to miss!

Did you have to pay straight away or do amazon take the money closer to launch? Or is there some kind of deposit? Really want to reserve mine, they are gonna sell like hot cakes!

Take a good, long, hard look, Microsoft. That's how you own E3. I am absolutely stunned by SOny's showing tonight, and could *not* be more excited for this generation.

Well its missing the Eye as well , but not sure the vast majority of us gamers use it. Just glad we have a choice. Maybe they will introduced a bundle with it down the line.

Great job Sony!

You definitely surprised me at many turns.

Keep Playing!

I liked when Sony gave shot after shot to MS and the crowd went nuts! (with real applause I might add)

I think i will ditch all the 2013 upcoming ps3 multiplayer games, and get them on the PS4. Such as the Watch Dog and Assassins Creed. SO excited for FF13 Vs and Kingdom Hearts 3.

Microsoft didn't just shot themselves in the foot, they cut off their own head.

And the only thing that would have made this E3 press conference better would have been the unveiling of Uncharted 4…but oh well.

I was still hoping for the Last Guardian at least we got Versus XIII.

I wasn't planning on buying one at launch, but my mind has been blown and with that low of price point I may have to break down and preorder.

Great presentation from Sony. However am I correct in assuming it will now require a plus membership to play multiplayer games?

Yes, it's either $4 or $5 dollars a month (don't remember the exact price but it is one of those.) Which isn't bad at all.

Temjin001

that's the word. it sucks. here I was hoping MS would drop pay to play online and we'd all be one happy family of free online loving. Now instead I got the reverse of that.

Temjin001

Or in other words Clamedues the loss of 7 or so D1P games over the span of the console's life cycle.

I do agree with you though, I was hoping something like that would happen, but it is a reasonable price which i am VERY glad. I'll take it.

But you will be able to play at least 1 new game a month. Of course you will not outright own the game.

well seeing that MS is giving gamers 'free' online versions of current blockbusters like Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed 2 with their plan and Sony is apparently releasing archaic $10 used gaming bin titles like Uncharted 3 and LBP Karting tommorow I suppose it could be worse.

But you will get to play Drive Club day one on the PS4. I assume that it will be a $60 game at retail. That there covers your first year of PS+. There won't be old PS4 games that they can place in the IGC for a few months anyway so you should get your money's worth for at least the first year. Will have to see where it goes from there.

Temjin001

So Drive Club comes free on PS+ day one? Not bad. I wasn't going to do Drive Club as it was (I WANT MOTORSTORM!) but the value is nice.

Jawknee

PS+ is $49 a year so what ever that breaks down to per month.

Fane1024
Fane1024

3 months is $15, though, so "4 or 5 dollars per month" is most accurate.

Well, coming from someone who's been with PS+ since the beginning, the free games aren't as bad as you think.
I mean, you're complaining about getting AAA games like Uncharted 3?!
They released Deus Ex for free last month, and I was excited and bummed at the same time, cuz I bought that used from someone for $20 2 months ago. But again, the free titles are pretty good. If you didn't already have them in your library, you wouldn't be complaining.

Have to make a correction to a post above. After performing more research I discovered with a PS+ membership you will receive the rights to the Drive Club Plus Edition. This edition may have limited gameplay compared to the full disc based edition.

Another correction: I saw the 3-month subscription in the store for $18. I could have sworn it was $15, but apparently not.

Even at $50/yr, it's still cheaper than XBox Live Gold. Truth be told, I kind of see why they did it. Free online was a genuinely appealing feature, but it had to be incredibly expensive. Even when bowing to the realities of the market, they still manage to do right by gamers. The decision to choose PS4 over Xbone is looking better and better from where I stand.

Temjin001

Nice. Well, I think Sony did well to push back on MS's content rich presentation with their own lineup of quality, somewhat more single player focused, presentation. Sony did mop the floor with MS on the indie side of things though. I'm also pleased that PS4 exclusives STILL retain that premium feel. Other than that, confirmation of no crappy DRM schemes, no forced online connection, and a lower price point pretty much keeps Sony in the pole position with game players for some time to come.

The PS4 exclusives still looked a notch better graphically than Xbone. The Xbone games looked like PS3 games.

Yes, and the only bad thing that could happen (besides ps4 shortages) would be not launching it until late December. Man, if this thing comes out AT ALL before the xbone?? Wow. Nail. Meet. Coffin.

Stay Classy PSX…

Was is just me or did MGS5 on Xbone have a terrible frame rate? Could have been the video feed I suppose. It looked choppy to me and I'm not talk about how they sped up the footage to save time.

It definitely chopped in places, I watched that part on TV. The fast forward thing kind of insults Metal Gear Solid as a creation imo.

Not a very strong software showing but those shots to MS's crotch won it for Sony as far as I'm concerned. $400? YES PLEASE!

is KH3 a ps exclusive?

There was no such mention so I assume not, one must also assume the Versus (Now FFXV) delay was almost entirely due to Xbox One development.

Interestingly the trailer that got me most amped up today was the start of the new Halo. I was thinking it was going to be some grand and epic game, like Lost Odyssey 2 or something. Instead. SURPRISE. It's Master CHief. heheh. joke was on me.

They basically won this generation by announcing this and the no DRM.

I actually might get this for christmas at this price. 400 bucks is pretty cheap and considering I would have to get my ps3 fixed or a new won I might just wait and get this instead.

I know there isn't backwards compatability but I will probably be done with the PS3 after this summer once I get through the last of us and rayman legends.

Anyway I was really excited to see it this cheap.

Shauneepeak

Well no backwards compatibility per se, but the Gaikai ability to stream PS3 games was confirmed and it actually appears to work how they intended it too. Though will we have to repurchase all of our PS3 games is the big question.

Yes!!! PS4 = perfect the price the specs and the overall design is a 10
And if Microsoft tries to subsidies there console with a 2 year gold membership, I'm sure sony can do the same there PlayStation plus

I think the design looks just a notch better than XBox One. The whole dichotomy of matte black and glossy veneer thing makes it seem too close to Xbox One.
I think both the PS3-phat and Xbox 360 looked nicer.

Sony utterly massacred The Xbox Inconsistency tonight, thats not me being a fanboy – the evidence is global. Them relentless announcements about the PS4 welcoming used games, Not having to be online, being able to play games around friends – just all them advancements which if Sony conformed to would have become the norm, I applaud them for standing up against all of that and have tremendous faith in the future of the PS4.

The price – Well a console which is technically superior for a huge discount in price in comparison. I wasn't thinking of getting a PS4 until late next year, I was expecting it to be that price then but now… I may even give in early.

One thing I will say, I think Microsoft had the better display of games opening with Metal Gear Solid V was just epic. The only notable games for me were from S-E which I will no doubt talk to you on the other topic…
